A small (or maybe not so small as it took probably 20h to complete) experiment in painting using iPad Pro and the Procreate app. I tried to paint an anime-like background inspired by the “Ponyo” hand-painted poster colors style.
This picture is based on some photos we took with Kana during our trip to Kanazawa. I really liked the long stairs and the empty beer bottle crates in the foreground and wanted to paint it someday.
You can see how this picture was made on two CZcams live streams:
• LIVE Painting - in Pro...
• LIVE painting in Procr...
Also, the Procreate brushes I used to create this picture are available on my Gumroad account here:

japanese people will really put this much time into a background for it to be shown for 5 seconds
@Alcatraz TM americans don't even make traditional animation anymore, it's either puppets or 3D. the state of their cartoons is horrible
If you're going to do it, do it right or don't do it at all.
And most of the animators are underpaid. Imagine that
Péter Baktay 3d animation is very hard to make as well. Everything is sketched on paper or in CG programs before 3d artists can start working on 3D picture. They even make additional softwares in order to be able to model certain special effects. Animation nowadays have got plenty of different styles and none of them must be underestimated.
@@sunnymay3963
Keep in mind however that in 3d animation and 2d animation, the difficult parts are completely different. With 3d it is the modelling and coding of simulations.
Once you have the model and animations, you can make use of them again and again and again to your heart's content.
Movement is, at least compared to 2d animation, much less of a hassle.
And while they spend weeks creating detailed backgrounds, they don't have to paint them for each individual frame.
For example, a sequel to a 3d movie can reuse all the character models or Disney and Pixar can re-use the fur or water simulation code they used for Zootopia and Moana.
In short, in 3d animation, the prep work is the hard part while in 2d animation the movement and lighting (which is relatively easy in 3d) is more difficult.
They are 2 completely different forms of animation in the end.
3d art is more common practice these days though because... as stated... once you have the necessary assets you can progress a lot faster and cheaper. And the more 3d animations a company makes the more assets they have over time.
This doesn't mean I respect 3d animators less than 2d, but I just wanted to point out that, at a certain point, the animation staff for 3d movies DOES have it a lot easier.
"It took 20 hours"
Now I feel better.
same, doesn’t change the fact I can’t draw tho.
He drew this in the same time as it took me to make around 7 art pieces which are garbage in comparison
This really has a kind of 'Spirited Away' feel to it. Makes me want to dig the film out right now and watch.
TinyMaths I thought the same thing but with Ponyo
@@user-en5qz7sj1p I've never heard of Ponyo, but I notice it's on CZcams, so I'll put it on my watch-list. Thanks.
Me too but with In The Corner of The World
This is really some next level stuff!!!
With your name tho
I saw your name in the credits of Kimi No Na Wa ( It was the only name in Latin alphabet :v) , and after this I can to see your big ability as illustrator. It's so amazing.
omg reallllyyy
What? Really?
@@Eli-eg5zj omg this is ground breaking...

Yes! He is on the list of background picture.
Cool
When I watch anime, I’m always so fascinated by the backgrounds, because of all the details. I sometimes even screenshot it, and make it my wallpaper. I really love background drawings💕
Its me everytime
Wow, this is fantastic and I love that you put a commentary over the beginning and end, really helpful.
Brad Colbow o fricc you're here? That's cool

Seriously, when I saw the thumbnail, I only just said omg... I am art student, and my dream job is background artist. The construction, light and mood in this illustration are just so sweet. You are doing really well, I hope that I can meet you in the future.
Update plz. DO what gives you JOY-- trust INSTINCS everywhere plz because they are from our Guardians.
OUTSTANDING!! Matz you play the harp in my heart to perfection >
What beautiful art! I love the aesthetic of old and new, buildings close together all jumbled up with those cute little street signs!
Stunning background! I´m shocked. Thank you so much for the brushes too!!
Awesome project
This video shows me once again how much work flows into creating an anime, my respect to everyone who's helping to create new amazing animes
I really wouldn't be able to do something as beautiful as this in just 20 hours. This is amazing!
STUNNING! For me it’s the shadow work you’ve shown here that really pulls this piece together. I love it!
This is so satisfying to watch and reassuring to hear how long it took to paint something like this. Seeing the process and how it all comes together encourages me to continue painting ☺️
I’m really grateful you post these speed-paint videos and narrations. The explanations are insightful and being able to watch a pro create (pun accidental) really helps me out as a self taught artist who wants to improve on painting backgrounds (plus everything I draw haha). I can’t purchase anything or support you on patreon yet, but I’m absolutely going to when I’m able! Thank you so much for being an inspiration to many of us artists! Looking forward to each of your videos! (´༎ຶོρ༎ຶོ`) (Also kana is so cute~ the characters really adds to the atmosphere too)
WOW i'm so overwhelmed with your artistic abilities. This piece is so amazing!
Btw Kana looks exactly how i imagined her based on her comics (so cute & soooooo beautiful! )
Have a great day both of You!
Sending hugs from Poland!
I loved your books! Thanks for your works!
I thank you for sharing your custom brushes, and of course a glimpse of your skills and the process of your artwork. I hope I can support you in the future, but for now, a sincere gratitude and admiration from me is I could offer ♡
Time to watch the video about painting, I must observe all the details
CZcams: *plays at 144p*
“I like it how it’s alright” LIKE HOW, IT’S BETTER THAN ALRIGHT,IT REALLY GOOD
Thank you so much for your sharing the process of this drawing! As a beginner to procreate it really brought to light the potential of the software and how dedication and patience can bring about such amazing results. Keep it up!
wow! I'm so grateful to be able to watch step by step the process of making the background like on anime, especially the rural or resident area. Bcoz I'm a big fan of this kind of drawing. My dream is to make one of this one day. Omg! One of my dreams come true. Now I could watch the artist doing the process, not only looking at the illustration artbooks. Thank you for sharing this video! I'm really glad to find this!
This is honestly so beautiful and inspiring! It gets me feeling very motivated to draw 🥰
Love and respect every detail
Absolutely stunning, I love the details ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Congratulations Matt, the final result is stunning! I especially like the painting style and the light effects. You really nailed it!
That clip at the beginning when she took your iPad was so cute, you looked so confused. Also, wow your eyes are really blue!
Ugh, this is so freaking inspirational. I want to get at this level of my art eventually. ❤️
For today, 24th November 2018 (Saturday) - Malaysia, I'm watching one of the best illustrations in the world. It makes me cry! Thanks for this!
Stunning!
This is so wonderful!!
It's like magic, makes me tear up
Many thanks for the brushes man!
本当に素晴らしい!👍🏼
Oh man~ i cryed a little. I love it, and I want to make this kind of works, I really admire your work, it’s my first time seeing your videos but I’m already in love. I suck at backgrounds, But I’m practicing for being better and better. This is the style and backgrounds I want to draw. 20 hours of you making this is just, no words, so admirable. I admire you so much, thanks for share your work :)
I just made the switch from wacom intuous4 to ipad pro and I'm so excited by these ipad pro videos seeing what is possible with procreate!! These are so gorgeous -- thank you for sharing your work with us!
Did you feel a big difference when you moved from a pad to digital screen?
I have a five but it still does not feel very natural compared to a screen one. Im starting to doubt me spending 400 but I also guess the ones with the screens are far more, even the ipad pro.
I'm a beginner and want to try digital painting. What would you recommend for me to use? wacom or ipad?
I would go for a wacom medium, they will litterally last a life time. I only want the Ipad so i can to plain air paintings outside.
ikr i feel inspired by them i hope i can have a ipad pro soon im still a kid so... good luck for me but i already a lot of plans for the future though i'll leave the rest to the future me.😊
So stunning
omg the detail 😩 sensei, this is not only "alright" this is fantastic
That's beautiful

I love the outcome and thanks for the brushes because it really helps me discover more on how would i render the paintings that i draw digitally. You are the best!!!!
Thank you matt for the brushes. Learning a lot from you. Love your works!
Just imported your brushes into procreate and I cant wait to use them.
Hope my donation helps you a little too. Thank you for your work.
Dear Korina thank you!!
zawsze chciałem zostać animatorem i artystą i się przeprowadzić do Japonii I pan dał mi wielką motywacje do działania. Więc kto wie może za kilka lat się uda.
So beautiful !!!!
Very cool. Love watching the painting develop. The colors, depth, tone all captured.
Ugh this is so beautiful! I think you just convinced me to get an iPad Pro 😍
me too but i gotta save money
It really has changed the way I do digital art, I recommend you also buy a paper-like screen cover so that it feels more organic while drawing with the apple pencil
My end goal is to be able to make something look atleast 1% as good as this. Amazing beautiful work!
This is amazingly beautiful! Thanks a lot for the brushes pack. I will definetly check them out!
I love your work, amazing!
your skill is fantastic....
This is beautiful, man. I honestly had a tear in my eye. It is amazing what people can create with their hands and skills. The music is just perfect for this, very relaxing and nice. Can I find more of your work in procreate? But at least not that fast. Maybe 10 hours version or 5? That would be awesome! Much love
You're crazy!!!! A true artist
This is beautiful!
Nice work 👍🏻
Simply amazing!
Beautiful!
Stunning
This is absolutely wonderful!!! I can’t imagine how can your mind picked the color and put it down into the canvas-totally awesome! Love your work!
The stream was amazing!!
Absolutely stunning. My favorite artist to follow right now, hands down!
I followed both livestreams but seeing it taking shape in a timelapse like this makes it look even more magical, thank you for sharing all the process with us :) I also loved the addition of Kana's character, I'd love to see him animated in this beautiful scenery. As alway, I wish you all the best.
Thank you for showing how to draw the background. And by the way, I'm Russian.
omg please do a workspace tour~!
Ok! We will soon :)
This is beautiful
Very awesome color combination
i learned a lot watching a speed paint than spending 8 hrs a day on art school lol
Aww, you and Kana make such a cute couple :)
By the way, have you watch Song of the Sea or Secret of Kells? What do you think about the drawing/animation style in those movies?
oh yeah also thank you for the explanation on the narration! It helps a lot to understand why you are doing this and that as well as to follow the flow of the process.
Beautiful! Great job!
It's been only a week, I guess, but I already miss your watercolours.😕 (your procreate sessions are awesome too but you know, I happen to look forward to your watercolour illustrations more). 😊
There will be more watercolors next :)
I bought the iPad for commission work mostly so I wanted to test what I can really do with it.
😊😊 can't wait to see them !
Wow amazing work! I think it would take me much longer than 20 hrs to do this and it still wouldn’t look as good 😂. What size is this piece/your usual pieces?
BEAUTIFUL
Amazing. I want to be able to step into that picture and experience it first hand. What a great atmosphere.
Too good bro!!! You should do more like this! And what brush are you using man?
My brushes sets for procreate are on my website in the tools section! 👍
„It turned out alright“
More like it blew the original photo out of the water.
Absolutely gorgeous work! Thanks so much for the insight - and for the brushes, too.
This was the best thing I saw today.... That's so beautifully painted... Awesome
Really loved the end result! I just had a question how do you colour pick while using real life backgrounds?.
I don't color pick from the reference I always pick my colors from the color wheel. Sometimes I'll use an illustration I really like the colors as a colors palette but 99% of the time I just use the color wheel tool.
I saw this on Pinterest it’s famous 😄
Everytime I see speedpaints like this I just cant help but think MAGIC!!
Those details and shade renders literally just appeared from blocks of color like QAQ It's so beautiful!!!
I love this and thank you sharing the brushes.
plot twist: he's not from earth and it took him 8 minutes and 6 seconds to finish
What background music is that? So beautiful. Can someome tell me?

I like both :)
Mateusz Urbanowicz me too! Good to see someone else with an iPad Pro and loves both of these programs
Amazing!!!!! You should work for a anime movie 🎥 production company
I did, for 4 years :)
This is just amazing looking
very nice and poetic !! i love !!
"i think it looks alright" looks at my drawing..... oh no.........
Почему мне кажется, что у вас русский акцент? )))
Thank you so much for this video! This video was very well edited and very enjoyable. Very peaceful painting
