  • Game Boy Works debuted 10 years ago, on the Game Boy's 25th anniversary, which means this channel is "retro" now. I haven't really made videos about my videos before, but I suppose this occasion warrants a rare exception.
For those interested only in following late ’80s console game history by way of release chronologies, you can safely skip this episode. The rest of you are welcome to join me for a few minutes of reflection. I'll be back to my usual routine on Wednesday.

I would never describe your videos as low views. You actually directly inspired me to start my own retro gaming CZcams channel and I've been doing it for over a year and I got monetized and I'm well on my way to getting my first meager paycheck from CZcams. You have over 37 times the subscribers that I do and I'm literally looking at the books that you've published on my shelf but I personally consider you one of the most influential CZcams creators of the past decade, and I say that without hyperbole or exaggeration.

@@ValkyrieTiara I was honestly surprised to see the subscriber numbers compared to SNES Drunk. Not that they don't both put out excellent content but I would have expected a similar subscriber count. And Gaming Historian, likely due to that masterful Tetris video, has now cracked a million. Still pulling ahead of Basement Brothers where Mr. Jakes in particular is covering the relative obscurity of PC-88/PC-98 gaming for an English-speaking audience.
All of those still being in the classier side of things compared to the clickbait, comedic, or Let's Play groups.
But yeah, Jeremy is kind of the Big Star of retro gaming.

it's a shame the original game boy works series will not continue. like you said, there are many games that most of us had not heard of since they are usually japan exclusive. but it is kind of understandable since the price is indeed on the high side. while most of us would not mind emulation footage, i also understand that it is not really a professional method. nonetheless, looking forward to seeing more game boy videos since i grew up with the game boy, color, and advance so i pay attention to those more compared to the home consoles.

Hey Jeremy. Firstly, thank you for the decade of solid content.
I'd like to share my experience with your channel and the circumstance of how I first encountered it.
In 2015, I dropped out of graduate school. I had moved to Orlando to get my MS in Interactive Entertainment at FIEA (basically, video games). Long story short, I was in the production track and felt more or less like a cheerleader for the people actually making the games. The cost of admission was steep, and I withdrew. I never expected I'd do that. And so, I was stuck in city with a lease, no money, and no prospects. My roommate continued on going to the school I had just dropped out of. Additionally, my bedroom was basically a closet. Like, it literally had folding opening doors with big slits you could see through.
That sets the stage, I think. I had previously had fun making CZcams videos in the Yu-Gi-Oh! niche back in 2011 and 2012. I missed CZcams, and so I thought for fun it would be nice to try and find some other project to work on with the platform. Well, the NES classic edition was announced around this time. Being interested in games, but extremely inexperienced with anything that came before the 5th generation of consoles, I thought it would be a good opportunity to experience retro games as a newcomer. But... I couldn't get my hands on one. They were too difficult to come by. I couldn't afford the re-sale markup.
It planted a seed though. And I started to think about how it would be a neat idea to try and go through the games in-order and document my experience. Looking into it, there you were. Already doing it, and much better and more thoroughly than I could have ever hoped to. And with actual genuine authority on the subject matter. Growing up with the games and marinating with them for decades. I loved it. And still do. I've seen people across the internet describe you and your series as "doing god's work" and I couldn't agree more. It feels like a genuine service to history and to these games. With a consistent methodology and approach.
My circumstances have improved since then. I went back to school for CS (a meme, I know, but it was an act of penance to myself). I got it while working, and I ended up finally getting started with CZcams after I graduated and could afford to start purchasing some gear. Not the same concept, not covering every game, and from the perspective of a first timer rather than a person of authority, but, still with chronology in mind. It has been a blast. Eventually, I plan to take what I've been learning about game design through playing classic games and try to make a few games of my own. So, I might finally circle back around to what I thought would be really cool a decade ago.
Apologies for the blog, but a lot has happened in the last ten years and given the occasion I wanted to share.
Thanks for the videos and for your dedication to the game! 乾杯!

It’s basically you, RndStranger (who actually completed and covered the whole Famicom library and reviewed every game), and Dinosaur Dracula.

While I wasn't there for the initial Game Boy video 10 years ago. I did sub to the channel shortly after NES Works started. I've been eagerly awaiting a new video each week ever since! They're always informative, entertaining and in many cases quite nostalgic for me to revisit these games and systems from decades past. Plus, it's been a treat to learn more about Japan only systems like the SG-1000 and Cassette Vision!

I've been following your writings and videos since I was just another lurker on the Talking Time forums after finding Gamespite around the release of Persona 3. Your work has been a big part of cultivating a decades long interest in gaming history and all sorts of various series like Etrian Odyssey, Dragon Quest, and Matsuno's games. It's been really fun watching this chronology series play out and I'm looking forward to however long it keeps going!

If the day ever comes that you upload a video saying "this is too expensive, and I can't do it anymore," it's gonna be like a gut punch. Too many other channels have done this, and far as I'm concerned, this is the best game history channel, period. I've been looking forward to Wednesday video drops for the last 4 years. Maybe I should hit up that patreon?

Thank your for all your hard work Jeremy, this is quite possibly the best retro gaming channel on the platform and certainly the model that I wish more channels would follow. The level of thoroughness in each and every review cumulatively results in the richest history of this era that anyone could aspire to. Keep it up!

On one hand, I'm surprised that this channel's been going for ten years. On the other, I've been reading the writings of ToastyFrog since... geez, what was it, 1999 or 2000, probably, when a friend I knew through EverQuest messaged me on AIM to tell me to check it out. A lot's happened since then, but Jeremy Parish keeps talking about video games SOMEWHERE on the internet, and I keep showing up to listen.

Can't add to what's already been said. You set the bar in delivering your combined personal knowledge and research but also display a level of professionalism in the layout and delivery that is unmatched. Maybe that was slightly hyperbole, but eff man, your content is a dream. Thanks for everything.

NES works is how I came across your content (specifically Zelda 2). I was so amazed/impressed at all the content in that first video, I immediately went back and started watching all your NES works in chronological order (thanks to your playlist). After I caught up on all that (usually playing on the side while I do my dayjob on weekends), I went back and watched all the rest of your videos. And now I just watch every video you put out every week.
I've said this before in prior comments, but I'll say it again: I believe the work you are doing is incredibly important. I dont think the subject matter will ever be a widely popular subject beyond niche audiences, but the historical information found in all these videos is just so good it could honestly all qualify as reference material for a video game history class (if one existed).
I follow a lot of different youtube creators of different types of content, but honestly I rank yours as top 3. The writing, the information, the content. All of it is just so good. I do plan on buying your books soon too (i probably will after this comment to keep my word lol). Keep being awesome!

I've been following this channel since day one, as a fellow Game Boy enthousiast. It inspired me to create my own short lived CZcams show dedicated to fighting games on 90's handheld (Pocket Fighter, all in French, talk about a niche of a niche of a niche). It also was around 2013 that I started looking into expanding my childhood collection via eBay and the French version of Craig's List, and experienced first hand the insane inflation I probably participated in (last CIB GB game purchased in 2017). Any way, here's to new beginnings and doing again what was already done, it's a burden only perfectionists understand!

I have been following your work since your IGN days. Since that time there has been a plethora of retro presenters and channels. Many of them quite good. However, they are all meant to speak to the choir, your approach reminds of art history. Professor Parish rolls in with his equipment and instead of a slide projector, you have a NES and instead of slides of paintings, each episode is a cartridge.
Not only do you have the thoughtful academic approach, but you approach the subject matter for an audience that is outside of the wood-paneled nostaglia den. You aren't deep diving for ultra nerds, you are building the framework for an understanding of the medium.
At risk of sounding like a kiss-ass, I can honestly say that your videos will be cited by students studying this subject long after we are gone. I mean that in an absolute subjective way. Not out of fondness.
Congratulations on 10 years. I'm sure this is a time of reflection, as many in this community are dealing with those middle-aged questions. I know you tend to be self-deprecating, but take a moment to be proud. This probaby isn't what you thought you would be when you started in games journalism, but how much more interesting it is now that you are here.
Since you are feeling old...I want some fan art of you as the old Knight from Indiana Jones with a bunch of catridges behind you. Looking at us with with dusty bemusement saying "Choose Wisely."
Anyway, congrats again. Hope to see you for as long as you enjoy it.
