Are they invasive roots? I have 2 in my back garden and 1 in my front i planted a couple feet from the foundations of the house, but am now worried i need to move it as everyone is saying roots are invasvive being willow as theyre grafted onto the stem, so could go really big? I brought mine from a supermarket for £13, surely it cant grow into a huge tree with big roots to pose an issue?
I have 2 flamingo willow tree's one is looking good the other not so good. It started off woth a few green leaves growing but now they are turning brown. The soil in the pot is damp as weve had a lot of rain. Any advice what to do, how to revive it would be greatly appreciated.
Thats a very tidy graft compared to the many I have seen.. I own 3 different types of these Salix Intergra.. one is grafted.. the other I have is a set of 3 with their original trunks which have been weaved around a bamboo cane in the middle.. the others I have are short which I use for bonsai 😁.. Absolutely love these.. the colours on my grafted one are so vivid.. nice contrast from green to white to a beautiful bright pink.. the camera never picks the pink colour very well. The others look more varigated which leads to less colour.
We agree that Flamingo Willows are best seen in real life to truly appreciate their gorgeous colours. Only so much you can see via video. Glad to hear you are enjoying yours :)
Hello I have one of these grafted onto the stem and also have some normal none grafted ones round the bottom but the normal ones are starting to go brown and crispy on the ends anything I can do to rectify it?
Hi there, it is difficult to say without seeing the plant in person, but issues like you describe normally arise from either overwatering, and underwatering. So we would recommend switching up your watering pattern to see if that helps. There is also potential that during the summer weather we have been having recently, the plant may have got scorched by the sun. We suggest pruning off any dead bits and giving it some time to see if it recovers. If you want to check if the plant is dead then you will need to conduct a bark test. Instructions for this can be found near the end of another video of ours here: czcams.com/video/xcmG0VkO69A/video.html Hopefully this helps and fingers crossed all is well :)
Yes! Although don't keep it in the pot its supplied in, re-plant it in a smaller pot. That is a great way to keep it compact. Plants will only grow so big in a smaller pot as the roots can only expand so much. Good call!
Basic instructions can be found on our website at the following link: www.yougarden.com/item-p-510192/flamingo-willow-salix-hakuro-nishiki-tree For more detailed instructions we recommend referring to the RHS website. One can never go wrong with their information. Best of luck!
Dude i was told to cut after late summer? Was hoping you would shed some light on this? Where do i cut and when. Also the one you showed out side was really big. I planted mine outside will it grow that big? Right now its the size you have next to you...thanks
It should reach around 150cm wide and tall at max size. This is certainly achievable as demonstrated by many lovely success pictures we've received from customers. If growing in a pot then it will need to be quite big. The plant will only grow so big if the roots can't dig deep. You can prune anytime really, but late summer or autumn is your best bet. No massive task needed, just trim off any dying bits and reshape the lollipop at the top to your liking. These plants do take some time to fully establish, so we suggest to keep it well watered and stick with it! You'll rewarded over time :)
As flamingo willows are deciduous, it is possible the leaves are dying due to seasons changing. If so this is perfectly natural and no reason to worry. As long as you keep the plant well watered then we see no reason why they won't grow back in the spring. They'll probably look even better too!
Hi what time of year would i start to prune my dwarf willow. I have 2 flamingo s and 2 dwarf willows..and what time of year would be best to use a rooting ball to grow more of these..am in the North of Ireland....
We suggest pruning in late winter. Hopefully doing so will encourage more growth in the spring time. As a general rule, Grafting is normally done in the spring, but can be done in the Autumn if you like. We don't graft these trees ourselves, they are done by an external supplier, so are perhaps not the best source of advice on the matter. We recommend visiting specialist websites for more detailed information on advanced growing techniques such as this. Best of luck.
so in order to have a dappled willow “tree” it has to have been grafted onto a long trunk? I bought a small bush with a nice singular “trunk” so I assumed it would grow into a tree? Guess that’s not the case?
Yes, the max size will be dependent on the graft done by the supplier. When you buy the plant it should normally be clear whether it is intended to be a "standard" or a fully fledged tree. Best to consult the supplier. If bought from YouGarden then it won't grow past 150cm wide and 140cm tall. As its grafted to be a "standard" and intentionally compact
Hi Peter, I have one of these, but I have a problem with it, The growing tips keep going brown & dying off so I don't get those long willowy shoots, It leaves the plant sort of stubby looking, It is looked after ! fed & watered etc It is kept in a large container, It does not receive full sun, The shoots do not get a chance to grow they just go brown and die off , I am thinking may be a virus, It has been like this for about 3 years, It is alive but stunted, Is there any advice you could give me please regarding this !!! Cheers Malc
Sorry to hear you have been having issues with your plant. It is best to grow Flamingo willows in full sun. So we would suggest to move it to the sunniest spot possible. Since you are growing in a container, make sure to keep the plant well-watered, but not permanently wet. Sometimes when growing in pots water will drain off too quickly. So keep in moist at all times. Furthermore, dead sections will often harm plants and it is best practice to remove them via pruning. So give it a trim and water well in full sun and it should make a full recovery. If you bought the tree from YouGarden then it will be illegible for our life-time guarantee, so get in touch with our customer service team if that is the case and you don’t see any improvement soon. Am sure they will be happy to assist further. Best of luck.

My Dapple Willow is more of the shrub type than a tree. however, now it is about 20 feet tall and wide and it is blooming vibrantly.

Can I keep this tree small if kept in the pot?
Yes! Although don't keep it in the pot its supplied in, re-plant it in a smaller pot. That is a great way to keep it compact. Plants will only grow so big in a smaller pot as the roots can only expand so much. Good call!
My sister bought me one for my birthday but haven’t a clue how to look after can you help ❤️🙏🌴🙏❤️

Hi my flamingo tree has a stem growing halfway down the bark, when I prune it do I trim it, please
Yes, trim off any branches sprouting from the stem. The stem is ordinary willow, which will put out suckers from time to time..
@philbroadley8824 is correct. We would suggest to prune these off too. It will be beneficial. Even if purely to retain the lovely lollipop shape!

My 2 young flamingo salix leaves in pots have just started turning brown 😢
What is happening? They were flourishing all year
