  • Part 5 of 5 -- "Now There Was a Day":
Following the lives of a dozen Australian soldiers who served in the Australia and New Zealand Army Corps (ANZACs) during World War I -- The expertly crafted, classic 1980s Mini-Series follows them from the 1915 battle of Gallipoli, to the brutal trenches of France during the 1916 Somme battles, the 1917 Arias and Vimy Ridge battles to the final 1918 German offensives and the final victory drive as well as the hardships, mid-adventures and the casualties of friends encountered by each one.
Produced after the success of "Gallipoli" (1981), and precedes "The Lighthorsemen" (1987). Recurring themes include the Australian identity, such as mateship and larrikinism, the loss of innocence in war, and also the continued coming of age of the Australian nation and its soldiers (the ANZAC spirit). Starring Andrew Clarke, Mark Hembrow, Megan Williams, Paul Hogan, Jon Blake and Christopher Cummins.
EPISODE FIVE - Original Air Date of October 31, 1985:
By summer-autumn 1918, the Anzacs are weary and yearn for the war to end. American soldiers ("Yanks") arrive in the British sector and are trained by the Anzacs. The company takes part in the Allied counter-offensives organised by General John Monash, now commanding a unified Australian Corps. With superior organisation, better co-ordination between forces and tank and air support, the attacks on Hamel achieve much success, sending the Germans falling back in retreat. Barrington recommends Flanagan to be awarded a VC after destroying a German machine gun post. In October, while clearing out an enemy-held village, both Barrington and Pudden are killed by retreating German soldiers. Over the first weeks of November, the remaining veterans wearily advance eastwards, and are overjoyed when news of the Armistice ends the war. In November 1919, one year after the conclusion of the war, the surviving veterans reunite back in Australia for the unveiling of the new war memorial. Kate and Flanagan are now a couple and Collins is set to become a journalist working for Sir Keith Murdoch. Cleary, Harris, Kaiser and Bluey also attend, as do a fragile Armstrong and Earnshaw. Reverend Lonsdale reads a moving tribute to the Anzacs, and Collins reads from the Ode of Remembrance. As a bugler plays, the scene dissolves to the fields of the Somme in the present day.

I remember watching this as a kid in the eighties.
Up until then, we knew nothing of our diggers in the first world war besides Gallipoli. This show shed light on an unlearned history. Amazing what the producers achieved.
RIP Jon Blake and Megan Williams, taken too early.

Awesome show, amazing attention to detail. The end scene of the Somme now is correct; I was there in May 2023 and it's green fields and so peaceful. You'd never think 100 odd years ago it was muddy fields.

One of the best mini-series of all time. I’d be proud to be an Aussie if I was one. My family fought in the American trenches. But fight they did. In every war from the Revolutionary war, the war of 1812, the civil war, the Spanish war, WWI, WWII, Korea, Vietnam, Iraq, And Afghanistan. War is Hell but when called we answer. Always have, always will.

RIP also to all the actors and actresses here who are no longer with us and were taken too young. A well told story by lovely people of almost 40 years ago and events over 100 years ago.

In tribute to this Australian version of the immortal theme of "this Band of Brothers", some words from someone who was fully qualified in the determination of those meriting such honors.
Shakespeare said that any man looking back at the days of his youth would regret "never having been a soldier or never having been to sea". If you've served, you know what he meant, and if you didn't you would never understand.

Awesome mini series. Have watched it twice over the years. WW1 was such a horrible waste of human life brought on by the rich & elite that accomplished nothing other than pave the way for WW2.

If you got through to here and didn't watch that terrible edited movie I'm sure you would have enjoyed it. Top rate Aussie series. The edited movie version should be taken down. It's a complete mess and should never have been uploaded.
