Food & Resupply for the Pacific Crest Trail

  • A lot of prep can go into a 2,650 mile hike! I thought it would be fun to go through some of that and take a look at the food I am starting my Pacific Crest Trail thru hike with, my 9 resupply boxes that I am sending myself, and my all time favorite dinner.
    Food mentioned:
    Santa Fe Beans - amzn.to/3kzBp4K
    Mexicali Rose Beans - amzn.to/3y8HgpH
    Minute Rice - amzn.to/3ORQMmZ
    Ultima Electrolyte - amzn.to/3vXi3vQ
    Nuun Electrolyte - amzn.to/3762o4P
    Oat Bars - amzn.to/39ybacP
    Nut Butter - amzn.to/3MNxdKH
    Seed Butter - amzn.to/3F8MEeb
    Bobos Bar - amzn.to/3LB8E3K
    Greenbelly Bar - amzn.to/3vzuw9Q
    Food Bag - amzn.to/3rOVfeu
    Bear Can - amzn.to/3Mtsi2u
    Spoon - amzn.to/3cA3mVG
I leave for the PCT in less than 2 weeks so I have been scrambling to prepare everything for this 3 - 4 month long hike. One of the largest of tasks was getting resupply boxes together, packages of food that I am sending to small towns that otherwise don't have a grocery store to buy food from. I am sending myself 9 of these packages to these locations...
    - Paradise Valley Cafe - Most hikers go into Idyllwild instead so you don't need a package here
    - Kennedy Meadows
    - Tuolumne Meadows - If you went into Mammoth you may not need this box either
    - Donner Pass
    - Castella
    - Mazama Village
    - White Pass
    - Stevens Pass
    - Stehekin
I don't really think boxes are super necessary, as there really is an abundance of towns along the way. But if you have a dietary restriction, if you want to hike very cheaply, or if you want to hike very fast I think they can be nice. Still it is a ton of work, and a risky thing to spend so much money on food, before you've even left for the trail.
I personally like boxes because it helps me to spend less time in towns, which both can make my hike quicker overall, but also helps me spend less money. I would not recommend doing a ton of these packages if you are newer to thru hiking.
    0:00 - Intro
0:13 - My favorite hiking dinner
    3:35 - Resupply box tips
6:42 - My food to start!

You like the bars from Bob's Red Mill? The actual Bob and his Red Mill are about 45 minutes drive off the PCT near Portland, Oregon, in the small suburb of Milwaukee, a few minutes drive from a local REI at Clackamas Town Center. If you are taking a day off, I'm sure Bob would appreciate saying hi.

Some sad news about Santa Fe beans- it's been hard to find them recently and I sent an email to check when they might be available again, and I learned of the passing of the owner, Grant Bassett. By all accounts he was a great guy and pillar of his community and it's a terrible loss for his family. His wife, Mary Ann, explained that they are planning on ramping back up, but have no eta on online availability.
If you're like me and have been missing santa Fe beans a lot over the year or two, I urge that you're patient and support the company when they do get back on their feet!

I just finished the AZT last month and sent myself 4 boxes with food I have always eaten and enjoyed. By the second box, I tossed them in the hiker boxes with the exception of my dinners. I ended up buying all of my resupply food because I just didn't want to eat a single thing I shipped. I think on future thru hikes, I will only ship dinners because I have eaten them for years and always enjoy them. Interestingly enough, they are beans, rice salsa and chicken which I cook and dehydrate at home.

I liked the nature valley fig bars, too. , Justin's nutbutters are great. I've found that I needed something like a sandwich to fill up so I found english muffins smooth well and are pretty light. ... with Justin's filled me up. A meal I made to fill me up was I got bunch of mixed dried organic mushrooms from Costco and blended them, then had, freeze-dried white onions, garlic powder, salt, nutritional yeast, textured soy protein. I also ordered cashew milk powder from znatural foods to make it creamy... (this is also a nice creamer for coffee or tea) This was added to noodles, couscous.... sometimes dill or cumin, etc to change it up a little. I also had flaked beans and made various meals with those. Pre making bags of nut varieties and cranberries or raisins are really satisfying. It's best to chew them to a paste to extract all the nutrients. I often will start with apples cucumbers and will eat those on the first day or so to offset carrying water. Actually really hydrating.

I've never gotten my act together enough to ship resupplies to myself consistently, but it still works out to be pretty cheap, filling and tasty as hell (albeit *slightly* heavier since my bean dip comes hydrated). This looks 100% vegan and almost what I would pack. My only concern is your lack of micronutrients, I suggest tossing in some nutritional yeast into your rice packets (flavor, B12, iron, etc) and iodized salt (or occasionally eat some dry seaweed snacks). Sure you could take a multi-vitamin but that tangy yeasty flavor works so well with rice dishes.
I was thinking of doing cajun rice packets like jambalaya and I'm probably going to use your idea of refried beans as a test run. Thanks and good luck on the trail!

Hey Jupiter! I see you don’t have a box for Snoqualmie Pass, resupply is pretty tricky there. Are you planning on skipping it and going 170 miles from White Pass or Stevens Pass? I’ll be going SOBO in late June, I’ll probably see you in Washington or Oregon! Love the videos man.

    • @JupiterHikes
      @JupiterHikes  Před 2 lety +2

You'll probably want a package there, but I have been there before and unless somethings changed there is a gas station and convenience store. Not a great resupply but I'm ok with that. Hope to see you out there!

    • @JupiterHikes
      @JupiterHikes  Před 2 lety +3

Oops you right! Guess I meant from mt laguna to warner springs, which is 70. Small mixup but at least my food will remain the same. My plan is to buy a bit extra in mt laguna, skip julian, get a bit more extra in warner springs, and then first real resupply is idyllwild.

@@JupiterHikes Exactly what I did on my thru- though I didn't put nearly that much planning into it. Just showed up at the border with 2 days food and everything worked out. SoCal is a great logistical ramp-up for new hikers with such frequent resupply options.

Hey Jupiter! What a great video. I have come to really love researching healthy and appropriate trail nutrition and I sincerely appreciate you sharing your means and methods and extensive knowledge on the subject. I 100% agree with sending boxes to anywhere but a PO. So much easier to hit a friendly hostel or outfitter than a government office with regulated hours. I think I know the answer from your food choices but you still eat lunch while hiking right? I started doing it last fall (just adjusting my pace slightly while I eat) and I really like it. Especially when you are trying to push miles and fighting against the dark. I really hope that your last weeks before the trail are relaxing. The trail is looking amazing and I can imagine is going to be a busy time for you when you start! 🙏 Thanks for bringing us along today. I hope tomorrow’s miles are kind. Keep truckin’ and be well.

I wouldn't say I am a guru on trail food or anything, but I have sent myself about 100 boxes before so that is where a lot of my experience is! The people who dehydrate everything themselves, or really go out of their way to eat healthy are the true kings and queens. I find myself more in the middle. I don't eat straight honey buns and chips, but I'm also not perfect by any means. Glad either way to offer some ideas for others to try. To answer your question, I do just snack all day and don't have a defined lunch or breakfast. Sometimes however it is nice to eat the bean mixture for lunch if I have extra. In a perfect world I would probably prepare extra for that purpose, and add dehydrated veggies to it as well. Just a matter of more effort when in the past I haven't felt a great need, so long as I am getting the calories the miles come. A trip that is more lax or fun and I could see myself doing more breakfast and lunch items, but it's no secret I like to try and push some miles instead

Also, I just wanted to mention that most of Nuun is the citric acid and sodium bicarbonate to make your drink fizzy (talk about luxury). They are what 6 grams each plus the container? IMHO, I personally don’t think they are worth it unless you’re looking for that effervescent experience. Can do flavor drops like Mio to cover up funky water. What I would recommend is 1/4 tsp of good sea or Himalayan salt, 1 pack / 2 tabs of Medi-Lyte electrolyte replenisher (cheap on Amazon) for the calcium, potassium, and magnesium, and possibly some honey for the carbs (30-60 grams per hour when pushing). I’m bringing straight up salt and a honey bear. 🧂 🍯

Gonna second the SkurkaBean recipe for anyone wondering. I was buying Backpacker's Pantry for a while and it wasn't even the cost that made me switch, it was indigestion. I had a couple nights after eating Backpacker's Pantry where I would wake up at like 2am with a stomach ache. The SkurkaBeans are notorious for making people gassy but my body can at least break it down unlike some of the $8 stomach bombs I used to eat.

Thanks for sharing that Jupiter! I’m getting excited for you! Stay healthy my friend! Not sure if you are trying to go vegetarian or vegan, but Vital Proteins Collagen is an easy, light, compact, and versatile way to add some protein in that easily dissolved in water and has very little taste on it’s own so it’s easy to add a 10g scoop here and there. Costco has a good deal on a fairly large size. It works really way with 1-2 tbsp of unrefined coconut oil to make trail keto coffee. You could also use MCT oil or powder, and/or some Laird’s Superfood creamer. You’d only want to do that if you were okay waiting on carbs and staying aerobic for a while afterwards to leverage that 9 Calories per gram of energy without a sugar crash. Basically, can run keto in the morning. Anyway, I think it’s very interesting that backpackers are starting to take a closer look at trail nutrition, and that doesn’t need to include massive sugar high glycemic junk food carbs with no nutrients. I loved hearing “greens powder” and “avocado”! Love it! Are you planning on bringing any low carb tortillas or anything? I think I’m going to bring a very underripe, and underripe, and a ripe avocado to have over 3 days, as well as blueberries, and spinach. I’m still trying to find a good greens powder with no added sugar. Let us know if you find anything good. Thanks Jupiter!

In the past I had used vitamineral greens, tho I don't know about the sugar in it or if it has any (my internet isn't loading the page right now.) I had a friend who was hiking the AZT who straight up just bought normal foods and packed that as his resupply. Avocado, carrots, salad bag, hummus in a ziploc. Was inspiring as I don't ever see others do that. Add nuts or peanut butter, and some other odds and ends and you got a really interesting resupply.
