So if you are wondering about some of the editing errors here and there, as well as the sometimes empty space:
Blame youtube. I tried to get this video up around 5 times due to copyright, with each edit taking ca. 1.5 hours to render. And of course, everytime I had to delete and alter something, something else might have gotten messed up.
I'm honestly just glad I managed to get it up (heh)
So sorry for any weird edits and the delay and I hope you enjoy!

Great video, though I have my own moment of "hmm..." that got me to think Bakugo was a good character.
I believe Bakugo was #1 in a poll even before his Street fight with Midoria. I will agree it solidifies his characterization, but for me I started to respect and like Bakugo after his fight with Ochako and the conversations had by him, Kirishima, and Cero afterward as well as Present Mic and Eraserhead during the battle.

good points, but this is 14 year old development stuff... cant say MHA has no deeper points but its still just a shoenen... immature and shallow compared to even some other anime like HxH, aot, or death note ect, the classics. MHA has yet to earn me over and Bakugo is still an annoying arrogant crybaby twat. Waaaa i cant bully ppl no more waaaaaaaaa poor me i have problems but dont see anyone elses waaaaaaaa! Bakugo is written cheaply and its about as obvious and shallow as can be. As you said yourself, anyone could predict what was up with his character long ago, theres nothing next level deep or intelligent about him.... its just a bully learning veeery slowly not to be a dick, and failing to do so most the time. wow so deep

I agree that HxH, death note, and AoT have brilliant character writing, even better than MHA at many points. Those stories explore very different themes and character dynamics than MHA though. While it might not speak to you personally, Bakugou’s story arc speaks to a lot of people because his struggle is one than many people have experienced. It’s cathartic to watch this shithead of a kid learn, repent, and grow in ways a lot of people wish they had experienced at that age. Likewise, Deku’s arc is also one that speaks to many people in a different, but equally grounded in real life way. You get the sense that these characters are true to life teenagers in a way that many anime characters are not. I love MHA and Bakugo in particular because this story and this character show a stepping stone between flawed self image and the aspirations of heroism and personal growth. His story inspires a lot of people to not give up on ourselves or give in to crushing outside expectations, but to try, try, and try again to become better people.

It's weird, but there's actually a very common situation that creates people like Bakugo (not in the bully sense, but in the superiority/inferiority battlefield within his mind). Being raised by a single mom that compliments you too often embeds a very similar false sense of self consciousness which is shattered by reality and the perceptions of other people. It creates a duality of self loathing and self praise manifesting as a bipolar fight between neurotic and egotistic behavior.
It's almost like you wonder if you're mentally handicapped and everyone praises the things you do because of it. Like, "Am I actually a vegetable and everyone is just patronizing me?" It's a complete rejection of your own sense of self-consciousness that you can only "test" through self-harm or violence in order to gauge what is "real".
Bakugo's character speaks to people without his environment being a mirror to theirs. It's a masterwork towards understanding perspective, aggression, and "confidence". Bakugo has Impostor Syndrome and he knows it, which is why he's constantly trying to gauge where he stands in relation to others, coming out in the form of aggression.

I found out too late that I relied on my talents too much as a child and once my peers started to surpass me in those fields, I was left with almost nothing to value in myself. I assume Bakugou's case is similar. It's hard to accept becoming someone "average" if you've always been used to being "the best" or at least "better than most".

Funny thing I noticed about Bakugou: Ever since that first training match with Deku he's been getting more and more careful with his quirk & trying to make sure he doesn't hurt anyone with it. Both Deku's arms got hurt in that match - one from using OfA, but the other from Bakugou and arguably just as badly. Watch his body language, especially his face. He doesn't freak out only because he lost; when the smoke clears he sees for the (possibly)first time what sort of harm he could really do to other people, and he's horrified. In the tourney he freaks similarly after he KOs Todoroki. His voice catches, he nearly stumbles. His opponent is dead limp - possibly actually dead... After such a huge attack with no counter it would be a real possibility. One could even argue his dialogue from that scene betrays the fear that he's accidentally killed someone, and his future as a hero by proxy.

It’s happening over and over again. He’s starting to reveal who he really is and how he really feels underneath the mask and the walls he’s built up around himself.
Major examples of this can be seen in the newest manga chapter (spoilers!!!!) when these happen:
Bakugou: Well? What is it? Did you figure something out about One for All?
      All Might: *Not yet.*
All Might: I don’t want to speculate and talk about things I’m not sure of... because I’m worried for him... you are too.
      Bakugou: ...
Bakugou: he just... deep down, he doesn’t take himself into account, y’know? He’s always been like that. And now that he can do so much more... something doesn’t feel right. It makes me want to keep him at arm’s length. Back then, I ignored my own weakness... so I ended up bullying him.
All Might: but now you’re sincerely helping out with his training. That’s your way of trying to atone... right?
(Bakugou’s implying here that Deku has no reason to still want to be friends with him, and yet he’s trying. That doesn’t feel right to him and he sees it as self-sacrifice from deku’s perspective due to the years he spent bullying him.)
      Then there’s also:
“DEKU!! WAIT!! YOU’RE THE ONE WHO SHOULD BE FURTHEST FROM THAT GUY!!! ‘ERASURE’ IS ALREADY GONE!!!”
So yeah. Bakugou’s extremely concerned for deku’s lack self-preservation skills-

praise is like a medal, you put it around your neck show it off and you get to feel slightly above others for a while.
But too much praise repeated over and over every day for years becomes expectations, the medal gets heavier and heavier till its not hanging around your neck its dragging down your head, you cant see others you can just see whats beneath, and eventually.... you'll fall to the dirt, and everyone will see and will be shocked dissapointed, or maybe some won't, maybe some saw it coming but didn't warn you, that the medal wasn't there anymore. You aren't wearing a medal anymore, around your neck there is only a chain tying you, TRAPPING you to the expectations of others, and the expectations you've chained yourself to your beliefs.

I'm surprised you left out the moment where, to me, our expectations of Bakugou were first subverted. Aka, when he refused the league of villains. In fact I'm a little disappointed that you left out the whole reason why Bakugou was kidnapped and how it must have affected him, and how it must have added to the pressure that made him crack.
First, on expectations: sure, we technically in the text had no reason to suspect that Bakugou, based off of his ideals, would have gone with the villains. However I don't know about you, but I ended up leaning on my genre knowledge and expecting him to turn in the pursuit of power based on his violent actions and ambition. Which is, of course, EXACTLY why the LoV kidnapped him at all! They paid no attention to him as an individual with ideals and emotions. They saw him as a violent angry kid, just like the audience did. I fully expected Bakugou to pull a Sasuke, and then he DIDNT. That was the moment I and many other people started to suspect that maybe Bakugou was more than just an angry explosive bully, and I think that his emotional outburst at Deku would have had less impact without that previous setup.
Second, God, imagine what that did to him. First he's chained up and muzzled in front of the entire nation of Japan. Second the hero who's supposed to mentor him refers to him as a feral beast. Then finally, third, he's kidnapped and subjected to the reality that the entire world sees him not as a hero, but as a potential villain.
Imagine what that does to a child.

idk why but i knew from the start of that arc that he wouldn't turn to dark side. honestly, from the first episodes of the series i didn't find bakugou repulsive, except maybe for that one comment about taking a swan dive off the roof to deku which is, yeah, he better apoligise for that soon enough. maybe it's just cuz we could see kacchan thro deku's eyes, and he seemed to know him better than anyone, and still didn't hate him. also, thing that seemed to strike me right from the get go, when bakugou is attacked by the sludge, stranded and choked for what, 20 minutes and still fighting him off? the first thing the adult heroes do? fucking praise him for how powerful his quirk is. not a single person there is concerned with his well being or any of that. he's 14 at the time! imagine what that does to a child, indeed
maybe it's the setbacks of the type of society that he lives in. but that can't be healthy, not even for a future hero.

  • @AnbuNinjaXIII
    @AnbuNinjaXIII Před 5 lety +1299

Actually, to be honest, I always understood Bakugo from the beginning. For some reason I was always able to relate to him (even though I'm actually a pretty meek personality). I saw all those deeper parts of him but I always found it hard to explain to other people why I liked him so much. I was expecting the breakdown scene and was extremely excited to finally see it happen. So I wasn't caught off guard nor did I feel like I had my expectations thrown in my face. I'm not saying this to sound arrogant like I know everything, this is just my personal experience with the character that seems to be different from what most people had (as the video claims). I don't know why. He was always my favorite. Maybe it has something to do with the fact that I myself have been faced with absurdly high expectations and praise my whole life. I am intimately familiar with that pain. Also I am an emotionally turbulent mess like Bakugo is. He's just more open about it than most people. It's almost cathartic. I always saw (and still see) that Bakugo is actually a sweet boy deep down. Many might think "sweet boy" is an exaggeration for a personality like Bakugo's but I really think it's true. There's a reason why his nickname is something as cute as "Kacchan" and it's not just to establish a childhood friendship. It's because it's cute as fuck and ironically suits him.
Bakugo was raised to measure his own worth (and that of others) by their power and success. He was never raised to value himself for his character or his own actions. As a result, his entire sense of self worth and self esteem is tied to "being the best." Without that, he has nothing. His entire sense of self disintegrates and his self esteem is destroyed, to the degree that it's incredibly damaging and dangerous. By the time Bakugo and Deku have their fight, Bakugo genuinely hates himself and sees himself as worthless.
I tend to be drawn toward characters like him a lot, the ones that nobody likes because they have nasty personalities or are problematic for one reason or another, but I can see they're actually just incredibly wounded and flawed people underneath. And maybe the fact that nobody likes them, either in real life or in the story, is part of it too. I've gone through life being generally disliked and ostracized by a lot of people. Being disliked and misunderstood by most people is probably the pain I'm most familiar with. That and feeling worthless, which Bakugo does at one point. There's nothing worse. Nothing worse than losing one's sense of worth or one's identity. And Bakugo, on top of that, is an emotionally distraught adolescent, like you said. Adults are one thing but I will always defend a child from people hating on them for being children, falling victim to societal pressures they're born into, having a tough time dealing with their extremely volatile emotions, and making the mistakes that children make. Plus he's a total flamboyant drama queen, to the max. I stan.

One of the simplest reasons why anti-heroes are popular is because they deal with the struggle to be good a lot more realistically than the straight-laced protagonist. The protagonist is usually someone for who doing the right thing 'comes naturally' which isn't outside of the realm of possibility but still makes it feel like the struggle to become/be a better person is skimmed over/neglected. Even when the protagonist has to deal with their own shortcomings on an ethical level it's usually portrayed flatly: it ends up looking like their negative traits are a) not a part of their true self, b) never actually a problem, or c) not even negative, just neutral traits looked at from a negative angle.
i mean discrimination is bad but when there's this type of alien who appears to attack your own people at every opportunity it's not exactly a sign of evil if you don't like that type of alien. And even then usually the protagonist is the one who somehow is above that dislike/distrust which just goes to show how protagonists tend to be nearly supernaturally good-natured.
The vast majority of people want to be morally upright and do a fair job of it under normal circumstances, but we're always struggling with our own flaws (even in small ways) and our ability to be good is limited by upbringing, culture, experience and circumstances. The protagonist who almost always gets it right may be nice to watch as a symbol of ethical success but is hard to sympathize with, even when they have those one or two scenes where they mess up just to show that they're not perfect despite their ridiculously good track record and the fact that those mistakes tend to be heavily mitigated in the long run.
The morally ambiguous character is a lot better in that department because with the morally ambiguous character (MAC) the evilness isn't treated as some supernatural force or irrelevant minor flaw which doesn't affect the character most of the time. The MAC's less stellar traits are as natural a part of them as the good traits, and influence their overall behaviour and image just as much (rather than just being attached for the appearance of depth). They also do a better job representing the dilemma people often run into that they find themselves in a situation where there doesn't appear to be a perfect answer and you just have to make do and shoulder the responsibility and the consequences.
So the popularity of the MAC is often based on the fact that they face the same struggles as ourselves (in a broad sense) instead of being pure good by nature which at best is a somewhat flat source of inspiration and at worst depicts most people as being wrong/inferior for having such struggles to begin with even though reality just isn't that simple.
On a side note I do believe that Bakugou still wants to be praised, but he wants to be praised when he actually deserves it and due to what has happened he doesn't believe that he deserves any of the praise he's been getting.

Honestly I was clued in on Bakugo from his fight with Ochaco Uraraka. This was the first moment I went "he's got more going on on a deeper level" and I re-evaluated my feelings on him. In taking her seriously and giving her respect and calling her by name he cemented the fact that he was paying attention to everyone and comparing himself to them. This made me think back on him comparing himself to Todoroki when they did their hero vs villain challenges and his fight with Deku. It recontextualized everything. Truthfully I should have seen it first from his encounter with Todoroki and Deku where he feels inferior to Todoroki and Deku beats him for the first time. That was the first point it clearly showed this side of him that we all ignored because all we saw is the bully.
By the time Explanation Point made his subs vs dubs video I had almost made it full circle to his conclusion, which ended up predicting Bakugo's moment and character well before the show had him break.

(Like when he gets angry that Shoto doesn't even see him as a rival, when he quietly listens to their Shoto's and Izuku's conversation, when he analyzed Shoto's quirk and mostly when he was almost breaking down after Shoto essentially threw the fight.) Yes, mostly there was the battle with Ochaco and how he acknowledegd her. But that arc itself did wonders for me liking Bakugo :D
Of course I did not expect everything to happen quite like that, but I always thought All Might's loss of power would hit Bakugo especially hart. Same thing that I never thought he'd become a villain.

Uraraka vs. Bakugo is one of my favorite fights in the series because of how much it plays with our ideas of the roles those characters fill. As an audience, we think that the fight is going to be a squash match that might give Midoriya or Iida motivation to beat Bakugo, and all through the fight, it looks like Bakugo is just toying with her as she constantly runs head first into a metaphorical brick wall. And then Uraraka reveals her plan, and we realize that Bakugo was fighting so defensively the whole battle because he has been paying attention. He knows that Uraraka is friends with Midoriya, and so suspects that Midoriya gave her advice or an out of the box strategy to beat him. Although Midoriya tried to offer advice, Uraraka turned it down, and the plan she had in the arena was entirely her own. She forced Bakugo to go all out, and that is why he respects her.
I also think that Bakugo's visceral reaction to getting first in the Sports Festival isn't just because Todoroki didn't go all out, but because Todoroki went all out against Midoriya and not himself. if Bakugo beat Todoroki when both of them were going all out, and Todoroki beat Midoriya when both of them would go all out, it would mean that Bakugo is the strongest. However, if Bakugo can't force Todoroki to go all out, but Midoriya can, then Bakugo is forced to consider the possibility that he isn't stronger than Midoriya, or that there is something that he's missing.

It’s been really cool to see more and more people grow to like bakugo over time as more and more hints like these have been dropped. still can't get over how his abuse over deku get's ignored. He's a good character but there's no repurcussions for him, doing what he did. Even as children you get punished, bullying is not condoned, yet people's defence for bakugo is "He was a child, children make mistakes" as if children don't get punished for their mistakes. He has never shown remorse for bullying deku, yes he doesn't do it anymore but does that mean he's sorry for doing it? They even gave the backstory for bakugo, which yes it makes sense for bakugo's character and his actions have some form of reasoning (albeit screwed, not helped by the unethical school of aldera, but that's beside the point), it also comes off as victim shaming, cause it's sorta framed as deku not understanding bakugo, Which doesn't really take away what bakugo did, just gives some context. In the end it's just something that nags me at the back of my mind, because it's not like horikoshi doesn't look at dark themes and stuff, but he adamantly refuses to acknowledge deku's mental state and childhood trauma to keep him as the same bland shonen protagonist. Might be the one thing fanfiction actually does better than the source material. Like imagine people calling you useless for 15 years and (implied) physically abuses and attacks you (dunno if it's everyday) with teachers (seemingly) ignoring it, it would be damaging to your mental health. hell bakugo suicide baits deku, you can say he doesn't mean it but it's suicide baiting all the same. Like i don't get why that stuff gets ignored in the story.

@@limdoo6473 I understand your point and your frustration, I would also like to see an acknowledgment and an apology for the past from Bakugou in the future, but I would like to offer up another perspective on why I think it probably will not happen in the story or it will happen much much later on rather than right now.
I myself was bullied the same as Deku by a close friend for around the same amount of time and escalation; In real life, these things are rarely addressed, you just sort of both grow up, sweep it under the rug and some people will say they're sorry, but not what for, and others just don't acknowledge it at all...but the guilt for the bully and the trauma for the bullied remain all the same. You feel the bully's guilt in the silences in conversation, like there is something they actually want to say but can't.
I did not get an apology until 3 years after the bullying stopped when we did a group exercise where everyone in the cohort sits down with their eyes closed, and one by one you take turns to be the one person in the middle that goes around and pick a person to apologize to for something you haven't apologized for yet. It is easier to say you are sorry when you have full control over the situation to do so without any feedback and Bakugou knows best that Deku always has something to say, so it would be even harder for him.
You also have to remember that in this story it has only been a bit over a year since Bakugou genuinely started trying to be a better person (even though it has been years longer for us). I think by the time they are full-grown adults there may come a point where they can talk more freely and it can be mentioned in passing by Bakugou if Deku even makes it to that age, or it may happen after Deku's death (ie. not at all in the relationship that Deku knows about). I would be astonished if Bakugou has the emotional availability to be able to apologize before the age of 23, but who knows, it may happen.
Either way, I think you can tell in the story currently by Bakugou's acknowledgment of Izuku and his attempts at better communication with Izuku, that he understands that he has not been "the best version of himself" and is trying to do better, Deku sees it and knows it, and to be honest that feels just as amazing as the apology because you know the cycle stops here and no one else gets hurt the way you were by the person who did it to you.

I fully agree on your point on Midoriya and would even go further - the misunderstanding of shonen characters is a problme that pervades all kinds of series. People constantly forget that these are kids. It's simply a natural dissasociation that happens - we see these characters go through inhumanely tough situations or how they perform feats of superhuman strenght, so its easy for people to forget that most of them are not even technically allowed to go to most movies alone. It sucks, but due to how Shonen is (almost always) based around power fantasy, this isn't gonna change soon.

I'm not saying that it didn't hurt him at all, it probably stung quite a bit, but Izuku didn't even show any true reaction to it like "maybe bakugou is right" in fact he said that bakugou shouldn't say things like that because what if he was actually that close to the edge voicing concern for bakugou despite bakugou hating him. There's a major difference between bakugou and midoriya. Midoriya has always been torn down but he's never given up because he has belief in himself, meanwhile bakugou was always praised for how amazing he was and now everything he was ever taught and told is crumbling to bits. Bakugou literally doesn't have any sense of self worth outside of his quirk and seeing that he isn't as great as he thought he is over time was slowly breaking him. While midoriya started at nothing and built himself up, he has a sense of self worth and wants to make it to the top despite what people taught him and he had a support system through his mother who told him he could still be a hero. Bakugou's mother called him weak and an inconvenience to people because he was kidnapped, which is traumatizing. Midoriya has definitely gone through some stuff because of the bullying but he fought through it and even tried to get close to bakugou. Also bakugou is a child, he doesn't know any better. Doesn't make what he said right, but when you're constantly unpunished by actions that are bad. you don't see anything bad about said actions. I actually personally think that bakugou would have been completely crushed if Midoriya did commit suicide, finally realizing that his actions did have serious consequences. Bakugou would not have just pushed Midoriya's suicide aside as if it was nothing, he would have been deeply affected. Izuku probably knew this too which is why he was telling off bakugou for saying such things in his head. Sure Midoriya is kind of a crybaby, but he's strong when it comes to his emotions. He may not have had a father but he grew up with constant love and support from his mother. Bakugou didn't have that kind of support through his parents. His father was a bit of a pushover and his mother put impossibly high expectations on a child for years. I personally don't see Midoriya as being as affected with how he was treated(doesn't mean that he wasn't affected at all, he most likely was but not to the extent of actually thinking about suicide) while bakugou shows a much more emotional and regretful side of himself after realizing everything. I actually kind of view it as a misinterpretation of Izuku's character when he's depicted as overly depressed or suicidal when that just isn't true. Midoriya definitely went through some psychological issues because of the bullying but it wasn't as extreme as bakugou finally lashing out after everything he went through

I think you missed one piece in your video. as you said, bokugo was born with amazing quirk and everyone in his school looked up to him. But onces he got into UA, things were different. there was other people with awesome quirks, no one really treated him like he was a big shot, even though he did score number 1 on the entrance exam. there was a scene that the kids were in a bus and they was teasing bokugo as well. adding to that, during the sports festival vs ochako, he gave it his all out of respect for his fellow classmate to even say under his breath when they were questing why he was going so rough on someone weak he replied " what part of her was weak" . I was watching bokugo ever since this scene and i expected him to break down sooner or later because no one can live with so much pressure especially a child who just started high school.

Same, the whole Uraraka vs Bakugou fight was the first moment that Bakugou's character struck me, and gave me the hints that there was more to him than I thought. I immediately got SO much respect for him when he said "what part of her was weak." With this suddenly, he showed himself to be mature and respectful enough to take Everyone, even seemingly soft and sweet Uraraka, seriously. (This is badass to me and I was getting so mad when both boys And girls were booing Bakugou over seemingly beating up Uraraka because OF COURSE Uraraka is tough, she is in the hero course and a woman or ANY person can be sweet and bubbly and still be strong. Cough Cough Midoriya). I was still very struck by the moment he broke down from his guilt over All-might's retirement. Even though I was always waiting for the moment to see more from him, it was still shocking and intense when it happened.

The whole “he’s just a kid” part of this video made me tear up a bit bc that’s something I find myself always saying when thinking about the characters in this show and what they’ve had to go through. They’re just kids who make mistakes and still need to time to grow. It really hits me in moments like Bakugo’s breakdown how twisted the hero society is to put so much pressure on a child like that.

I’ve loved bakugo for the longest time, with the slow distruction of his world view, and the growing of desperation to succeed while he keeps slipping first losing, coming second, false victories and failing to get a license. I dont think I fell into the trap of not thinking of bakugo as a person probably because of a silent voice in which the main character bullies a disabled girl and regrets it deeply later in life. I’ve found myself in this mindset desperately trying to succeed to satisfy expectations and slowly slipping as the pond becomes an ocean. I learned to not put my self worth on success but rather consistently working on a given skill.

One of the biggest reason i liked bakugou right off the bat was because i read alot of manga where bullies or perceived bullies were good, became good or got development that made them relatable and i really liked that sorta thing and bakugou became like that more and more as i read the manga and loved him even more. i always thought it was natural to like him, especially since he had so much development, but after meeting people who didn't like him cause they thought he was just a bully, but liked other characters who didnt have much development, i realised that wasnt the case. hopefully this vid can open the eyes of those people.

The important thing here isn't that we missed the reality of Bakugo's character, it's that we do this exact thing in real life as well. This same process of expectations, insecurities and an idea of self-worth hanging from a thread is what drives basically all bullies in one way or another.
And yet we magnify the issue by acting like they're just assholes. They push others down, not primarily from some kind of sadistic love of domination, but in a desperate attempt to protect that thin and fragile idea that their entire understanding of their own worth rests on.

I know it's been two years but:
      (1) your McDonald's Childe pfp. I- First of all, I am a fan of Childe and Bakugou too and it's easy to see why. They have a ton of similarities even if they're really different. Both just hurt children (one is a child and the other is a childe (lmao. Serious time: the other one has an inner child)) trying to navigate the world the best they can with socially unacceptable attitudes and defined goals and loyalties. Second of all: McDonald's cult lmao
      (2) I started liking him ish right after the sludge villain when he went up to Deku and was like "I didn't need anything" >:( and then stormed off but it really started to kick off right after his ground beta fight (the first one)
Why: because the little stompie stomps not only gave his character a bit of comedy, but it (combined with everything before it) also gave us a hint of a couple traits that I caught onto that was already hinting at him being a deeper character. Which is the fact that he's a try hard, that he has a pride that can easily feel threatened, he's overly independent, and that he's a perfectionist that only strives for the best. Which combining all of these leads to the obvious conclusion of: He only feels he has worth as a human being when he is the best/perfect and he achieves that all on his own (but I was in no way thinking about this until the training session with Deku. They were just kind of planted in the back of my mind) He's also desperate to prove his worth at least to himself
How I even got that: It kinda hit me that "why would this even be here?" and then that lead to "what does it convey" (in hind sight, it really could have just been a joke but I didn't consider that XD) and then that lead to "Why would he feel the need to do that" which lead to the realization that, even when he was held hostage for I think it was 15 minutes straight of struggling for his life, one of his first thoughts was to reestablish that he doesn't need help and that he's essentially not weak, which stuck out to me. I also noticed that after the sludge villain, there is a huge change in how he as a character presents himself. He's no longer smiling, he's no longer loudly proclaiming his superiority at every turn, he's no longer bragging. Instead, he's quiet and constantly in a bad mood.
And then all of this went up into a point in Deku vs Kacchan 1 when we got to see him visibly mentally struggling, when we got to see his side of the story for their childhood, when we got see him almost go into a full blown panic attack twice during that little arc, and we got to see him truly doubt himself is when I knew that Horikoshi would treat this character like a human and I was excited (because I love these types of characters. I also love psychology and psychoanalyzing people (especially characters) which is the only reason I even thought about any of this)

    @kisakisakura6663 Před 5 lety +286

Sorry for the length of the comment: it includes the golden child syndrome as a base for a character analysis of Katsuki. It covers early childhood, family situation, his relationship with Deku and his over all social status. The focus is on Katsukis perspective and his feelings. Needles to say, this is my interpretation of his character. I tried to keep the things that were already in the video said short.
Katsuki is as far as I can tell a victim to the golden child syndrome: It is based on misplaced praise e.g. for things that are yet to be done, or things that other see in them but the child doesn't see for themselves; like being called intelligent and gifted, being told they are able to exceed without doing much when they really are hardworking instead and have to fight for every good grade.
This eventually leads the child to see the difference in what people see in them and what they see in themselves, they notice the expectations. The child will then see themselves in a situation where they either can do everything to match the expectations or don't and fail.
In Katsukis case; he opted to include others expectations as his own and he choose not to fail.
Formulated in a slightly different way: he had to live up to this expectations or else everyone would see that he was unworthy of them; he would be unmasked. Beneath the facade of strength lies a lot of insecurity and anxiety; and those might have been very real since the sludge villain attacked him.
If you look closely at the story: Bakugou (as far as I know at least) ceases to interact with Deku after the incident, it is his first instance of change from the pure bullying behavior. Prior to that we know of instances that shaped them, especially shortly after Katsuki got his quirk. He did not shun Deku at the beginning, he was fine letting him follow alongside his other followers (note: they were unequal relationships that can't be classified as friendships). That changed when Deku - useless, bullied, quirkless, beneath Katsuki Deku - stood up to Katsuki in a heroic way to protect another kid, when this Deku - who wasn't supposed to be heroic in the least - wanted to help Katsuk when he fell. Katsuki from a very young age was threatened by Deku. Because he did not follow the rules that applied to Katsuki, who had to succeed to prove his worth. Deku in his behavior incorporated a lot of typical heroic stereotypes, when Katsuki only had his power, he also had the audacity to imply that Katsuki needed help, that he could not succeed on his own. Thus Katsuki tried to keep his most worthless competitor down to elevate his own worth.
Than the incident happens and all this keeping down was useless, because worthless Deku saved Katsuki for real. And if he has to be saved by someone powerless, wouldn't that make him powerless as well?
This mindset continues way into UA. The first devastating effects can be seen during their first fight and the desperate need in Katsuki to prove himself worth AGAIN, to clarify that the thing with the sludge monster was a fluke and that he still is more powerful, worthier than Deku. That backfires partly and Dekus admission does not change much for Katsuki, because in the end he still lost.
He does not gather a following as usual, the people around him stand their ground; Katsuki at first is alone in school (he probably tells himself that it does not matter) and he has no social skills that tell him how to make friends with people who do not look up to him (he probably still looks down on most of his class). In these first months he is isolated and even shitty Deku makes friends and above all he is alone in his worries, because remember his mother thinks that Bakugou was praised too much and likes to counter that. There is no way he can tell his mother about his worries (there isn't much disclosed about his relationship to his timid father yet).
So he focuses on school work and hero training to improve himself, because he needs to be on top or his persona, his very being falls apart.
Oceanz explained to following events pretty well, so I am going to add only a few points that lead to the breakdown:
The sports festival is devastating on its own accord. Not does only Todoroki don't give his all in his fight against Katsuki, he rather specifically singles out Deku as first his greatest rival and later as the only one he uses his flames against. To Katsuki this behavior translates to: you are not worthy of my full effort, you are less than Deku. This is also the reason why Katsuki refused the medal and first place; he genially believed that he did not deserve the first place, because he was unable to give his all, the tournament was in his eyes rigged; his win unlawful and not deserved.
The internship added to that wound, furthered by the training camp where a group agreed he needed to be protected, than the kidnapping where he learned that he was perceived as a villainous character instead of the hero he wanted to be. He needed to be saved again, All Might had to retire because of him, he was the cause for the end of an era, for the fear that arouse in the people and that was distributed through the news. Instead of winning, he was loosing and his weakness cost a lot.
When the teachers visit to ask permission of the parents to let their children come life in the dormitory, it becomes evident that even his parents do not understand his struggle. His mother assumes - rightly so - about his ambition and dreams and put them forth; not even considering the risks of furthering his education into a hero, even though he just went through a kidnapping. She places blame about what happend with the kidnapping on Katsuki and does so offhandedly, mindlessly - its an ingrained habit; because others put Katsuki up too much in the past and she still thinks he needs to be put down a peg.
On a positive note Katsuki started to make friends with Kirishima and Kaminari, both of who are highly social and thus probably able to work around Katsukis inept social skills. Their friendship (Katsuki is as the manga confirmed closer to Kirishima) is also evident in the licence exam. They outdo him too alongside Deku.
And then the breakdown happens: Insecurities are confirmed, the guilt about All Might, the feeling of being misunderstood, the image of what Katsuki believed he needed to be was nowhere reachable and Katsukis pathetic self visible to all, his goal gets so far out of sight, he can't even reach for it. He wasn't just taken down a peg. Katsuki hit rock bottom and the one he confronts about all, is the person who soars now instead of him. [I agree a beautiful written scene and while I am no fond of his behavior I am fond of Katsuki].

Westerners perfer the journey over the destination and it's Japanese literature that is far more likely to have a character maxed out in power doing stuff as the protagonist while the West wants to see the journey to becoming powerful. That's why Luke Skywalker is pretty much universally beloved as we follow him from a somewhat annoying farm boy to a capable Jedi Knight overthrowing the Empire. Ok, so bakugo was sort of a character that I understood almost immediately when he entered the screen and he became a character that I related to at a personal level starting with his first battle with deku. He quickly became one of my favorites.
It was kind of weird that I related to him so heavily because he was not like any other character I've related to before. For starters, I'm not loud and angry at all. I was always known as the quiet kid in school, and I'm very open with my emotions, but I recognized bakugo's superiority complex and i saw myself in him.
I couldn't really place my finger on why I saw myself in a character like him at first, but as I got to know him better, I started to understand. I was definitely considered one of the "gifted" students. I always got straight A's in class without ever really trying, and my classmates would always rely on me for group projects. The teachers saw me as a leader and role model, so the problem children were almost always sat next to me. The longer I was put on this pedestal, the more I began to subconsciously think, "well the people who are doing worse than me must be trying to fail on purpose. And the ones who actually try must be really stupid" Because it was always so easy for me. Of course, most people I knew thought I was a pretty pleasant person, and i never told anyone that they weren't trying hard enough or that they must be trying to fail because I knew that school wasn't as important for other people.
I never learned what it was like to struggle for something and no one ever challenged my intelligence. I expected myself to be able to ace every class while barely trying. This expectation made the failures so much worse. I would sometimes cry over my homework whenever it suddenly became too hard, and if I got below an A on a test I would be so ashamed of myself. I would be crying so much, it would be impossible to hide the truth from my parents. My parents did have expectations of me, but I don't really think they were as strict with me as I was with myself. It didn't help that my sister was kind of a genius too so I never really saw that it was normal to struggle.
Basically, the failures were extremely rare, and most people wouldn't even consider them failures, but when they did happen, it would take me forever to get over them, and i still sometimes think about them to this day.
I was still brought up as a perfect model student, and i even ended up skipping a grade in middle school, but I wish a got to struggle more, because in the long run, it makes it way harder to truly succeed at anything as the failures heavily affected my mental state for a while. I skipped a grade because i was seeking out challenge. Because success without struggle wasn't rewarding at all. Much like how bakugo wanted todoroki to use his full power in their fight because if it wasn't as hard as it could possibly be, then what is the point.
Basically, the more you succeed in life, the less rewarding it is and the harder it is when you fail. And expectations mean way more when you set them for yourself. This is what makes bakugo feel so real, and when I watched how bakugo reacted to failing his battle against deku, it felt like i was watching myself. As I saw bakugo's story unfold, I imagined myself in an environment where everyone I knew seemed better than me at everything and all of his actions just made sense because I, too, am way too stubborn to accept help from people, and i hate losing arguments and competitions. Even when I'm struggling, it would just add insult to injury if I had to rely on someone else to tell me what to do.
This is only part of why bakugo is so amazing, because not only do people like me see their obvious flaws through this character, they also see their undeniable strengths. Bakugo's mindset isn't completely flawed. It helps him stay determined in difficult situations. Even when he's not used to giving much effort to be the best, he will still do whatever it takes to meet the expectations he set for himself, and in that way, he is still a role model, just like I was. He will inspire those around him even without meaning to. His obvious strengths and weaknesses make him such a lovable character because it makes him feel extremely genuine.

It showed a side of him that we could never see from Deku's protagonist point of view. That's when I realised how complex his character is and that he is not an antagonist for the main character but a mirror of who the main character could also have been.

I agree with most of your analysis, but as I see, the turning point for bakugo's popularity was when he was kidnapped and he showed his true colors, as you said, he ain't just another sasuke. That moment showed that he could be mean and aggressive, but he was a hero, and then this second moment with midorya solidified him as an amazing character. But this moment only has a meaning because of how bad ass he showed he could be.

There are a lot of moments before that as well. Like when he befriends Kirishima at the end of the first season, or during the sports festival when he shows respect for Uraraka's strength, only to be denied that same respect from Todoroki, when he fights All Might and have to team up with Deku, or when he sees his classmate has been injured at the training camp and disregards the no-fighting rule, etc.
He's shown compassion and respect to other people, he just hasn't been that explicit about it. Hating Deku is because of a personal grudge, but he still respects him for who he is and accknowledges how much he's grown. Seeing other people treating Deku as a rival almost makes him jealous (even though he'd never admit to it). He's a very interesting character and definitely one of my favourites :)

Thats was why he was so angry at deku, because he was hurt that deku witheld that from him, after all, they were sort of friends and he felt betrayed. you know what i've always gotten angry at when it comes to Bakugou bullying Deku, is that as soon as it was discovered the *ADULTS* should have put a stop to it. They should have taken Bakugou and explained to him why it is wrong of him to bully and why he shouldn't do it (Although i think most of the adults in MHA have the same mentality as Bakugou has/had) cause it started when they were 4 years old.
A 4 year old cannot be held responsible for every action they do, and by that i don't mean that they can't be held responsible at all only that you as the adult need to TEACH them that it's wrong, a 4 year old don't think about future consequenses; they don't understand it, they may understand consequences within a certain timeframe but not years.
Both Bakugou and Midoriya could have had such an amazing and supportive friendship if only the school they went to had responsible adults there and as much as i love Mitsuki i have to say that she's a HORRIBLE mother, most of Bakugou's behaviour is learnt behaviour that Mitsuki is teaching him.
She's not a bad person, she's just not a good mother either.

I never expected to find myself liking Bakugo. At all. Ever. I appreciated him as a good character for the story, but I hated him. Especially involving my own experiences with bullying, he was the lowest of the low for me (alongside Mineta lmao oops). Once I finished the anime I was a little shocked by the ending and I actually started to give him the tiniest chance. Okay, he wasn't a complete asshole like I thought, so maybe he could change. MAYBE. But I still didn't like him. THEN I started the Manga, and that changed everything. I won't spoil, but let's just say recent arcs have given him a lot of growth. He's coming around, he's showing compassion (in his own way), hes being a team player. And I can genuinely say that watching him become who he is in the manga at this point has made him one of my favorite characters in the show (obv alongside Deku, Kirishima, and Todoroki).

I honestly think Bakugo has my favorite character development. He starts off as your average bully that picks on the weak quirkless kid in class and is portrayed as incredibly cocky and arrogant. But, that shallow exterior is peeled away to reveal a child who has spent his whole life working tirelessly to be the strongest. He doesn't pick on Deku because Deku's weak, but because he feels threatened by the courage and true heroism an objectively weaker person has. Not only that but the same weak kid was chosen by his hero and inspiration for those exact qualities Bakugo felt threatened by.
TLDR; Bakugo worked hard his whole life and Deku was given his strength. Bakugo is rightfully angry to be out matched.

I feel so bad for bakugou in the most recent season (4). His temperamental attitude distanced him from everybody, so he doesn't really have friends. You can argue Kiri is his friend, but they interact little if at all in this season. And besides, it's kinda hard to be close to someone like kirishima-- who has such a demanding social life (arguably) -- that he can't really make a lot of time for bakugou. He has tons of friends outside of him.
Honestly, bakugou is one of the most relatable and sympathetic ppl in the entire series to me. Despite the fact he used to bully deku.

  • @FoxBatinaHat
    @FoxBatinaHat Před 5 lety +62

He's an Over-achiever. But though he wins he doesn't achieve. Though he wins (physically) against Deku in the battle simulation, he looses the actual simulation. Though he wins the sports festival, he doesn't achieve a victory that is indisputable. Etc.. He keeps (winning?) but actually not achieving any substance. As Bakugou grows, he is internalizing that his (wins) don't carry value.
The sense of accomplishment is non-existant, when after completing a task, the result is dry.
If Deku is the symbol of peace (stability), Bakugou is that of Victory. But just because you win, does that make you the best or right? Not necessarilly.... Achieving a positive outcome alongside that victory, substantiates it.

What this guy is saying is true, this is the woke-est man I've ever seen in my life.
Bakugo started seeing himself as weak and not having purpose in life ever since that slime monster attacked him. Ever since that it's been the sports festival, final exams, the first fight with deku, kamino, and theres way more in forgetting. It wasn't just some people but it was
    E V E R Y O N E
that forgot that bakugo was a fucking human.
Hes not just a sick mindless jerk that bullies deku and thinks their better than everyone. The only reason he felt good about himself is because people completed him. But they weren't complementing him. They were complementing his quirk. People are mindless when it comes to quirks. To think, WE were the sick mindless jerks that bullied not just bakugo but maybe ALL the characters. THINK.

  • @Flaris
    @Flaris Před 5 lety +274

It's a good video. Although I think it focuses too much on just Bakugo's quirk. His issues came well before that point. Bakugo was 'that kid', the one that excelled at everything! He wasn't just the kid who developed the OP quirk and his ego was inflated. He was the most skilled, the smartest, and could do anything he set his mind to. And then he developed a quirk and the praise went to his head even more.
I thought the flashbacks were really nicely done in the show to establish this guy. He went from someone confused about why Deku couldn't do the things he could do as well as he could. And soon enough he came to a frightening answer of "I'm just better."
I do think it's a fair interpretation to say he was crushed by the expectations put upon him. His upbringing was a mess that built a bully. He was someone that in his small world couldn't be matched by anyone at anything he put his mind towards. Overall I still don't really like Bakugo. But I do want to see him grow to a point that I do like him as a character.

While it's not the same as real people don't have super powers, there's other metrics that people judge you on. As someone who is yet to leave the education sphere but has seen all of it, one of those metrics is intelligence. I was raised being constantly told how intelligent I was and how I could do anything. I was forever told how good of a kid I was and that I could really... do anything if I put my mind to it.
    It kills a kid.
Yeah, I was rather naturally intelligent (not insanely, but enough to wow people as a kid) but this video really shows how, even if it's true to some extent, the weight of the expectations of others can hurt so bad.
Let's start with what's more obvious to some. I was raised believing that if I ever failed to achieve something that I was broken and something was wrong with me. I was making friends with the wrong people or I was eating unhealthy or I was playing too many video games and they were rotting my brain. Funnily enough, I was told the last one many many times but I only ever believed the first 2. Because I didn't finish highschool achieving the university scholarship I wanted, having just fallen short, I developed insane amounts of anxiety and later nearly pushed away all my friends, family, and convinced my girlfriend she couldn't live with me anymore. I developed an eating disorder and was convinced I either had bowel cancer or was a developing celiac. I've only just started on the road to recovery for those things now, after having them nearly permanently ruin/end my life. Also, because I was always supposed to be such a good boy, I can't even say anything in disagreement or ask to be treated better without others thinking I'm just complaining and making a fuss or, if it's my parents, being told I'm a disrespectful little twat who needs to know his place.
But there's more to it that people don't think about. I don't feel like I can ever talk about something I've achieved to anyone because they have been convinced by either my family or other people who had been convinced in the past that I am naturally good at anything I do. The reason is that they think I'm bragging about how good I am. Usually, I'm just happy I've managed to achieve something. Anything impressive I do is expected of me and failing to achieve that is explicitly stated as something I have fucked up in. Sometimes I feel like if I don't know what a word means or how to spell it, I will be mocked by those close to me. My friends don't play video games with me anymore, at least against me, because, while there is some that I have put the time into getting good at, if I win in another game that was just us having fun, they think it was pointless to play against me. That sucks. 99% of the time (at least in the last 5 years) I don't care about winning, I just care about having a game that's challenging and fun.
I can now also never take a compliment to my natural ability as I really do see it as an expectation and, even more so than that, something that discredits the work and effort I have put in to achieve my goals.
I was never a bully like Bakugo and hopefully never will be but I can understand him and empathise with him. I don't have some super power but expectations are crushing. Please remember guys, you don't have to hold yourself up to other's standards and try to lower your own. Have goals and realistic expectations and be happy when you reach both. I'm far happier now than I was a year ago and the amount I appreciate my new understanding of myself can't be understated.
    Good luck, heroes.

As someone who has actually gone through this kind of thing, I can confirm that it FUCKS YOU UP. In year 6, I was a very mature kid. I was constantly getting praise for my writing, I always got an A on writing and spelling tests, I always read my writing in front of the class, and people ALWAYS told me how my writing was flawless. Once I hit high school (year 7 for Australians), I was suddenly pushed down and, as you said, my whole world began to crumble. I was no longer the best, I started getting B's in English, and I was suddenly thrown in with the average group. Unfortunately, my parents had high expectations of me as well, and eventually, I ended up with anxiety and depression. I'm still great at creative writing, in fact, I do well in that aspect of English, but every compliment I get makes my life more miserable because I'm worried that if I write the wrong word, or spell something slightly wrong, or rush something, they'll hate me.
Praise is a dangerous thing if done wrong, and I'm still dealing with my problems to this day. So, feel free to compliment people, but constructive criticism will be more useful for their mental state. Katsuki Bakugou is a beautifully written character, and I'm glad there's FINALLY someone who can represent the problems that I went through.

I knew at some point that rage was going to be replaced with hurt. I just wanted to hug him and tell him its okay.

He’s really grown a lot. UA’s been good for all of us- Aizawa-sensei taught us to value heroic passion more than the power of our quirks. Bakugou’s had to work on that more than any of us. He had to learn something from Midoriya for the first time in his life.

I just had a feeling, never knew what, but I still liked his character. I never expected the moment to happen, and I'm glad I understand him more as a character. I genuinely think he is my favorite character I have ever come across in any show. Ugh I love him so much.

I know this comment is super late, but I relate to Bakugo so much. I mean, I didn't grow up in the same way he was raised. In fact, I was bullied and ignored for most of my youth. I had asperger syndrome which was a massive struggle when I was a kid, and I basically had zero control over my emotions. Once I learned to conceal my emotions and pour my feelings into my various talents, I noticed that many people adored me for them. So I decided that my talents had to be perfected in order to satisfy others and gain popularity. Any mistake that was pointed out to me threw me into a loop where I would degrade myself for not doing it correctly. I wanted to use my talent to make up for my attitude since didnt consider myself "normal". With that one moment in season 3 where Bakugo blames himself for All Mights retirement, calling himself weak and a failure, it made me tear up. I felt like I was watching myself on screen, having another outburst and embarrassing myself in front of someone I care about. I love this series for fleshing out so many different characters with realistic struggles, not because they are attractive or whatever. I hate that some people look at people like me who say Bakugo is my favorite character and think "oh, that's because he's hot!" Or "He told Deku to kill himself". Believe me, as someone who still struggles with insecurity and peer pressure, I can assure you that I like the way Bakugo is being developed.

I like Bakugou as a character but not as a person YET. I think some people here don't get that the video only explains why he is the way he is and how he will ultimately be a better person. Not one moment or second did the video state you should like Bakugou as a person so I feel that some people in the comment section are blinded by hate.

Martin Ramos I agree for the most part! I like him as well but I like him because I looked past his childhood being praised. He only cares about himself yeah, but he pushes himself so hard to be on the top. He didn’t ride the compliments. He used them as a starting point, and worked so hard. He forced himself to become the top. The best of the best. Even if it means pushing others out of the way. I think he’s truely inspiring.

That's probably because of one of the most standing out traits of Bakugou's relationship with Midoriya (not Bakugou's personality). That is because both Sasuke and Bakugou developed inferiority complex towards Naruto and Midoriya respectively.
People legit thought Bakugou would go Sasuke route where Bakugou got kidnapped, and because the way he told Midoriya not to save him, people thought Bakugou would join the League of Villains, hence the comparison to Sasuke since Sasuke did join Orochimaru

I have always loved Bakugo's character since the first episode at first I thought "This guy is an asshole!", but as I moved on with the show even before the tournament arc. He kind of grew on me and I noticed how he was constantly getting shat on from every direction. At first I thought that he was going to be a future villian, but when he kept going onward about being as strong as All Might I had a feeling he wasn't. Cause I knew that it wasn't part of his character even though he has shown Villianous character traits he has always stuck with being a Hero even though he is a bit of a jerk sometimes. When he rejected on wanting to join the villians and rebelled hardcore that was where I screamed "THAT'S MY BOI, RIGHT THERE!!". To me I treated him like a real person with real emotions, because the character has proven that he has depth, development and room to grow and the show gained my trust completely by not ruining that. That fight with Deku was absolutely brilliant and I fucking cried hardcore when Bakugo let it all go.. man. I love this show.

Funny one thing I constantly noticed throughout the series was whenever Bakugou insulted someone else he had a tendency to add something along the lines of "Are you looking down on me?" "Do you think you're better than me?" "Did you think you were stronger than me?"
Especially with Deku.... It's like he's constantly saying " I'm not weak btw. Who you callin weak? Stop tryna think you're better than me". It's also whenever he tries to belittle others, that's when he says it the most

bakugo will always be my favorite character. i feel so connected with his struggles, like i’m living the same life. (though he’s obviously just an anime character and i’m a living human) my whole life i’ve always been praised for little achievements like my intelligence, or how good i am at a hobby, sometimes even my looks. and this may seem like a good thing but it’s really not. i’m constantly trying to 1up everyone around me. always feeling like i’m not good enough. i torture myself to the point where i can’t BREATHE without someone’s approval. i work so hard but end up crumbling down halfway to the top- because i’m so scared that even if i DO give it my all, it will never be enough. i always act like i’m untouchable, like i can do anything. i hate it when people worry about me. i was so obsessed and absorbed in trying to please the ones around me that i’ve fallen behind, and its constantly driving me insane. there’s a phrase in one of Marina’s songs that has always stuck with me. “i feel like i’m the worst, so i always act like i’m the best”
