Many Anime fans declared "Earwig and the Witch" as the WORST Studio Ghibli film for several reasons. Is it really the worst though? Well after watching all 25 films, thus far, I try my best to rank all their films from worst to best. This was a long and difficult task, but luckily I have Phantomstrider with me on this!

Technically, Grave of the Fireflies did have a message: While many assume it's just an anti-war film, it was expressively told that it's a social commentary on how the Japanese goverment utterly failed to provide aid and protect their citizens during WW2, which made those same citizens to treat each other like crap.
The aunt wouldn't have been so mean if refugees she had nothing to do with weren't tossed at her doorstep, the doctor wouldn't have been criticized if there were the means to properly feed orphan children, the farmers and others wouldn't have given Seita so much shit if there weren't short on food. And by the time Seita was finally able to get some food that no one was gonna provide to them... it was too late for Setsuko.
The goverment had no problem into enlisting middle schoolers and sending them towards their deaths, but when it came to giving back to the children they were supposed to protect... they treated them as nothing but a burden.
Seita's pride didn't kill Setsuko in the end... neglicenge from the entire system around them did.
That was Ghibli's way of saying: "Goverment of Japan, if the time ever comes... you need to do better than back then."

Yeah during WW2, Japan's military was full of endless ego and pride. Even after the atomic bombings many in the military leadership still wanted to continue the war with the U.S thinking the can hold out against a invasion or more atomic bombs. But when the Emperor just wanted to end the war when it was clear they were not going to win, many of those very military leaders threaten to overthrow him in a coup and had him house arrest. But when they couldn’t convince the exhausted army and the Emperor managed to escape his house arrest, these leader all committed suicide. The whole event was referred to as the Kyujo incident.

Okay, we need to have words.
To find the message of Grave of the Fireflies, and understand why it was so harsh, we need to discuss Isao Takahata’s actual intention with the film, which is the reason he felt the life story of a World War 2 survivor needed to be told when it did. If you’re looking through IMDB trivia on this movie, you might find a little summary about his actual intention, which was to convey that Seita and Setsuko were living a failed life due to their isolation from society, and if you were to look a little deeper into his words, you’ll find that this message was specifically tailored to the youth of Japan during the late eighties, who were experiencing a rise in crime and juvenile delinquency like no other in the country’s history. The economy was booming, and the younger generation had no respect or willingness to understand what the older generation had to go through to create that bubble for them, and a lot of them were making the same kinds of choices that Seita had... Fuck those uptight geezers, we can make it on our own! And just like with Seita, this attitude didn’t really work out for anyone, as it led to crime, violence, gangs... This is the crime wave that inspired the Akira, if you can believe it.
Takahata’s message to the youth of his generation was that periods like this don’t last forever. You don’t understand where the good times you’re living in came from, you don’t know what people had to live through to establish them, and if you take them for granted instead of working to preserve them, they’ll go away. This is why Seita and Setsuko, as spirits, look out over the horizon of the modern cityscape. This is why the symbolism of fireflies, and all of the decisions that Seita made, were so important. Because Takahata was right, and just a few short years later, the Japanese economy crashed, resulting in a depression that famously saw the nation’s GDP drop by nearly one trillion dollars. This movie is thus firmly a product of it’s times, but on the other hand, the story is told in such a way that it’s somehow still timeless, as the ideas it presents can be applied to any situation where one person, or a group of people, let their pride get the better of them and refuse to accept help.

It should be noted that in Howl's Moving Castle, the Witch of the Wastes did NOT "turn Sophie into an old woman". She cursed her to take the appearance the age she was acting.
Sophie behaved like a old woman, nagging Howl for not being grown up enough, so she took the form of an old woman to reflect that.
When she embraced her feelings for Howl, she then took the form of a young woman. It is a visual showcase of her actual character growth.

With the Wind Rises, once I found out the wife was fictional, I took her and her part in the movie as symbolic of the more innocent pre-war Japan and her passing as Japan's loss of its old ways and innocence to the war and modernization. Interesting little trivia, but the man who ruined Jiro's dreams would make an amazing sort of inverted Ghibli film, himself
If you ever read anything about African charity work, might have noticed the name Sasakawa come up. The one who founded the continent's most successful humanitarian charity is, in fact, *a war criminal!*
He was a yakuza crime boss and leading member of the Diet at the time (with so much invisible influence he was nicknamed "the shadow man"), and one of the foremost voices in launching the invasion and conquest of Manchuria, as well as the owner of most military airfields used.
After the war Ryoichi and his co-conspirator, future "Godfather" Yoshio Kodama, were so absolutely loaded they managed to bribe their way out of any punishment
While touring his American holdings in the 60s, he met a _soon to be pretty important _*_peanut farmer_* who converted the former warlord into a true "peacenik" and extinguished his xenophobic disgust of non Japanese
He started financing *european* scientists with grandiose plans the community turned away from like *Norman Borlaug* and his organisation is responsible for the extinction of dozens of deadly parasites, including having financed the Carter Foundation and its decades long battle against the Guinea Worm. What a turnaround!
The circumstances of his freedom might be a bit shady, but he's probably saved 20 times the lives the war he started took (low estimate *350k* to unethical scientific experimentation and biological warfare, so making a go at atoning for *that* is no small feat), not to mention the continued benefits into mankind's future from completely eradicating certain diseases. From waging war *with* viruses, to waging war *on* them. Doing a deep dive into the circumstances of his philosophical change would be an incredible film (or even series of them, it's quite a long era), I bet

Earwig and the Witch could have been more appreciated if it was a co-production like The Red Turtle.
They were going for a claymation approach for the CGI’s visuals but it would have been amazing if they made it a UK-Japan co-production with Studio Ghibli and Aardman (Wallace & Gromit, Shaun the Sheep, Chicken Run, Creature Comforts, Rex the Runt) in pure claymation. Especially since Studio Ghibli and Aardman are close friends, to the point that Studio Ghibli distributes Wallace & Gromit and Shaun the Sheep in Japan.

As much as I agree on the admired picks on your top 10, my definite favorite Studio Ghibli film would have to be “Whisper Of The Heart”. It was the first one I’ve ever watched ever since it premiered on Turner Classic Movies back in January 2006. I was very fortunate enough to record the original Japanese version on VHS when it was the last Ghibli film to air on the night TCM ended a marathon that celebrated Hayao Miyazaki’s 65th birthday. To me, “Whisper Of The Heart” is not just a coming-of-age movie that’s full of pre-teen moments and a romantic connection between Shizuku and Seiji, it has a meaningful moral on inspiration and taking your time. The movie helped me grasp my artwork that I enjoyed doing, and many people I’ve known encouraged me to never give up on my talent. I’m sure a handful of others can relate to the characters, and the message behind challenging yourself is a journey, and I wholeheartedly agree that it’s the most underrated Ghibli film that should receive more appreciation and attention like many others. Not to mention, we all gotta love Ghibli’s take on John Denver’s “Country Roads”!

Grave of the Fireflies was a double feature with My Neighbor Totoro because they wanted something happier after the film.
In fact, Totoro was only made because they thought Grave of the Fireflies would bomb at the box office on its own due to how bleak it is while being aimed at a shonen (aimed at a preteen to teen audience) demographic rather than a more mature seinen (aimed at an adult demographic) audience.
They did well at the box office solely because of Totoro.
Ghibli rarely aims at an adult audience, even their darker films like Princess Mononoke and Tales from Earthsea are still shonen anime. And some of their films like Ponyo and Kiki are kodomo (aimed at kids and families) anime.
The only seinen films they made are Porco Rosso, The Wind Rises, and Only Yesterday; and they are still made to be family-friendly.

Grave of the Firefly is a historical movie .
It has to be ground to reality, and those children are definitely not the only one that suffer.
The film is actually incredibly believable
I seriously don't get why you have those questions to begin with because it is pretty self explanatory if you put yourself into their shoe.
During war time it is hard for many normal family to even survive, let alone taking care of 2 more children.
You're like asking why during War time soldiers need to eat trash food and live in extremely filthy condition...
You're like asking why when you're hungry and no money you don't eat meat...

My personal favorite has always been Castle in the Sky. (I actually silently whooped in joy when it was on the list.)
I didn't really pay attention to the message in the film because I was watching it for what it is, a fun movie about magic and adventure.
The soundtrack gave me goosebumps from the opening theme, the discovery of Laputa, even the Lone Soldier Robot made me tear up a bit, to the very end with the song "Carrying You" playing through the credits.
That's the way I've always viewed it though.
Nausicaa and Princess Mononoke are tied for 2nd place for me.

The pineapple flashback in Only Yesterday always got to me because that’s the only time we ever see the whole family collectively happy. They’re all excited in anticipation of trying this fruit, and when none of them like the pineapple it felt a balloon was abruptly deflated on all their emotions. Plus I got pissed at Taeko’s mom for scolding Taeko for continuing to eat the pineapple, when in _many_ of the flashbacks she’s ragging on this poor girl for being a picky eater.

I actually hold the, quote: "Butchered version of Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind" (Aka, Warriors of the Wind) in VERY high regards. Maybe even more so than Ghibli's other films. I may receive flak for this, but hear me out first before you throw the hate.
Warriors of the Wind was the FIRST ANIME I have seen. In fact it was because of this version I was introduced to Anime in the first place. I loved the story, the animation, and the setting as a child and when I grew up and discovered the actual Nausicaa, I still held on to my fondness for Warriors. To this day I still have my original VHS copy of Warriors of the Wind and I treasure it dearly.

I love the message in Princess Mononoke and a lot of the scenes are extremely beautiful and the first scene with boar is a brilliant action scene, in my opinion. while I think Princess Mononoke is my favourite, it is less light hearted than some others so is sometimes less easy to watch when just wanting to chill but others like the 3 others that I mentioned are maybe intended for younger audiences so are more lighthearted

A movie about a girl with ADHD being harassed her whole life? Who else would tell that story? A story about orphans being victims of war and the selfishness of society? Nobody else would have dared to make it back then.
They've been willing to take risks in order to grow the cinematic landscape.
And honestly films don't have to explain everything about the story being told. After all, we are never told everything in real life. Somebody somewhere is making a decision that will affect your life and you'll never truly know why they made that decision. You shouldn't expect to understand a character's choices, actions and feelings to always be evident. That's life. You can ask questions, but you can't expect answers.
Oh, and that guy believing he actually loved that girl might actually have. He was the closest thing to a friend she had. Though he disliked her actions, he did try to help her in spite of it, right? He had to have felt something for her to want to weather the toxicity she spewed. And she did get what she wanted, but that meant that she no longer had to keep up the bad attitude. And she had years to reflect on things by the time they met up again. Things wouldn't be like before. Sometimes silence gives as many answers as words do.
BTW, the turtle wrecked the rafts the man made because she liked him and didn't want him to leave. But turtles can't talk in a movie without dialogue.

B-movie schlockmeister Roger Corman did the older Nausicaa dub that was heavily edited.
Disney (ironically enough) would later make a redubbed version that is completely uncut and faithfully translated.
It's also ironic that Disney was the only studio willing to release the Ghibli films in their uncut form even if they get a PG-13 rating, while Fox Searchlight Pictures (who still got some of Miyazaki's earlier films) and Warner Bros. approached them and wanted to cut the films.
Miramax/Harvey Weinstein did the Princess Mononoke dub, and they were forced to do it uncensored.
They, however, got Neil Gaiman to do the English localisation script, though they were originally going to get Quentin Tarantino to do the script.
Harvey Weinstein has become infamous for redubbing and reediting animated films, with things like Leap!, Underdogs, Doogal, Leo the Lion, and Arabian Knight.
He even does this for Asian films like Iron Monkey, Zatoichi the Blind Swordsman, Police Story III: Supercop, and Drunken Master II.

Spirited Away is an absolute masterpiece of filmmaking. It’s amazing from beginning to end. This is one of the peaks of animation and movies just in general. Is it Ghibli’s masterpiece?
    Not Quite
Spirited away is amazing but PRINCESS MONONOKE is one of the greatest films of all time. It’s dark, gritty, and is not afraid to throw everything at you. Expert pacing. Beautiful animation. It is just an insane look on society and the importance of the earth and its preservation. Princess Mononoke (in my opinion) blows everything else ghibli has made out of the water. Even Spirited Away to some extent.

I wouldn't comment this if it didn't bother me (First my favorite movie is the Tale of the Princess Kaguya directed NOT by Miyazaki but Isao Takahata) which is why I'm frustrated that this video seems to think Miyazaki is responsible for very movie on this list when a lot of them he had nothing to do with them besides inhabiting the same studio.
Isao Takahata is responsible for creating Fireflies, Yesterday, Yamadas, Pom Poko and Kaguya. He died a few years ago.Its actually pretty easy to tell apart his work since its more faithful to Japanese storytelling, culture and sensibilities, and Miyazaki is much more of an East meets West appeal, which, cynically, I think is the sole reason why the studio is so popular in the states (plus John Lassiter's frothing at the mouth..).
True there are other directors involved with the studio's filmography and Takahata was def ProbleMatiC, shall we say… all the same I think the lack of any mention of any of the other hands on deck is kinda sad.

If Disney entered it for Best Picture and Best Foreign Film, it would probably win and it would have beaten Parasite at being the first foreign film to win Best Picture.
I think Spirited Away and Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon deserved to be the first Asian films to win Best Picture over Parasite, and I really loved Parasite.

57:39-57:44 Just a side note, this scene perfectly demonstrates why I was blown away by Jason Marsden's acting in this film. He's always had such versatility in matching the tone of his characters that even if you recognize his voice, he completely melts into the character he's playing at the time. With Haku, he can go from harsh and demanding in this moment to soft and soothing in the garden scene. The fact that he's had experience in playing both the boy next door and the delinquent in his other roles really shows in this. There are not many voice actors, let alone actors in general that are that believable in playing both archetypes.

My favorite Ghibli movie is Nausicaa of the valley of the wind. I am planning on buying the manga which I heard that tells a even more amazing story.

It's more like it's *extended*, last 18 minutes of the film never happened, it's like the difference between 2003 FMA and brotherhood.
They're beat for beat *up until a certain point* then diverge, although you do get to see more of what "the grandpas" and Yupa are doing
So uh, don't get surprised the first few chapters come off more like storyboards straight from the movie itself 😁
