    Absolutely sensational footage of Didier in the Sierra, what a talent he was! Driving like that it was no surprise that he was offered a drive with the works Lancia squad for the following season. The 88 Corsica victory was especially significant I think with a very spectacular drive and an iconic livery. I had a picture of that car on my wall as a teenager - it came from a calendar of iconic Ford rally images, but that’s the one I kept, along with Vatanen in a Rothmans Escort winning the Acropolis. Thanks for this amazing footage, from a time when my love for rally really took off. I look back on that time fondly even now more than 30 years later!

      Yes, I think the Sierra footage is the best in this, much as I love the Metro.

    Alot of people 4get he gave the Sierra cosworth it's only ever wrc win in 88 corsica. A rear wheel drive whale tail version not a 4x4 sapphire. Ford didn't win any world championship rallies after that until the escort coz came out in 93. An incredibly underrated driver who did great things for the sport. 1st ever Frenchman to lift the crown. Awesome. Great memories. Sweet

    All of the Metro 6R4 drivers from '85/'86 that I can recall ( only Group B spec 6R4s ) -
    - Didier Auriol
    - Tony Pond
    - Marc Duez
    - Malcolm Wilson
    - David Llewellyn
    - Jimmy McCrea
    - Harri Toivonen
    - Per Eklund
    There could be one or two more.

    Very interesting the fact that:
    - Didier's, Marc's, & Harri's MG Metro 6R4 would retain the RHD setup for the France RC, Belgium RC, & Finland RC respectively, all of them LHD countries.
    - Didier's, Marc's, & Harri's MG Metro 6R4 would be set to LHD for the WRC rallies (Except Lombard Rally GB).
    - Didier, Marc, & Harri are all part of the MG factory works WRT, although their cars aren't painted in Computervision or Rothmans paint schemes.
    - Didier Auriol is one of the most successful of the MG Metro 6R4 drivers (referring when it's at it's full bore WRC Group B-Spec, 1985-1986). Won the 1986 Franco RC.

      @Pen3989 Před 2 lety +1

      Interestingly enough Auriol and Harri actually complained about the RHD layout because they wasn't got used to it, even Auriol said that the car was weird because of the RHD layout

    That's Didier's original co driver Bernard O'chelly (I've probaly spelled that wrong) nice to see the original line up. Bernard was replaced by Denise Yuroday( again.. sorry about spelling)in the 95 corsica round and they won their 1st rally 2getha in a Toyota celica. Didier won title in 94 for Toyota but his best season was 92 even though he didn't get the title in the final evolution of the delta when he took 6 wins (wich was unheard in those days)( he held that record for a good 10 years or so until sebastian loeb broke it in the mid norties). Great driver and great video m8. Thanks again 😊

      The attic is a dangerous place for VHS tapes. They hate cold and damp. If you think you've something that you'd like converted or to share with others, why not drop me a line on Twitter?

      Off course. Auriol won the french championship with 6R4. If I'm not mistaken, he beat Chatriot (Renault 5).

    Great to look back, but not a great time for rallying in general. From 82 ish, budgets just doubled and then doubled again every year untill 87.

    • @teamhandsome1974

      Rallying was at its height in the 80’s. And too a lesser extent the 90’s. There were dark days in amongst them with the poor crowd control and in-checked bhp outputs on inadequate tires, but the entry lists and coverage were awesome! 😍

    Pity he didn't stay with Ford after 1988 but then again the Sierra was only RWD, Lancia come calling and you don't say no to Lancia. Mind you if he had stayed for 1989 he may have done well on the Monte, as it was sometimes quite dry, and he may well have won again in Corsica. Then in 1990 he could have had the 4wd Sierra. Interesting that Ford lost both Sainz and Auriol after 1988, I wonder if they had tried harder to keep them.

    • @strahinjastevic7480
      @strahinjastevic7480 Před 3 lety

      They lost Sainz becouse Toyota was willing to give him a chance to compete on every surface as far as i know he wasnt content with being just a specialist
