    • Iron Maiden: Flight 66...
    Iron Maiden: Flight 666 is a British/Canadian award winning concert documentary film featuring the heavy metal band Iron Maiden. The film follows the band on the first leg of their Somewhere Back in Time World Tour between February and March 2008.
    Flight 666 is co-produced by Toronto-based Banger Productions, known for their documentaries Metal: A Headbanger's Journey and Global Metal. The film was shot in High-definition video with accompanying 5.1 surround sound produced by Kevin Shirley (who has worked with the band since their 2000 album Brave New World). It was distributed by EMI (except in the U.S., where it was distributed by Universal Music Group) in select digital theatres on April 21, 2009.
    "Aces High" is a song written by Steve Harris. It is Iron Maiden's eleventh single and the second from the 1984 studio album Powerslave. The song tells the story of a British RAF pilot fighting against the German Luftwaffe during the Battle of Britain (1940), the first battle to be completely fought in the skies of the UK. The song topped at number 20 on the UK Singles Chart. Aces High is one of Iron Maiden's most popular songs, and has been covered numerous times, by bands including Arch Enemy and Children Of Bodom. It was released as a single over a month after Powerslave came out.

    Significance of this show is it was the first western hard rock band to ever perform in Mumbai with a full stage set. People traveled by train from all over India to attend, many without tickets. There were as many people outside the venue as inside. Elephants were actually used as heavy equipment to help construct the stage (made from wood). A historical music event that opened Mumbai up for other rock acts to appear.

    The opening with Winston Churchill's speech is a great scene-setting for the song, about the men of Fighter Command on constant readiness in the early days of WW2. The crowd is so enthusiastic because Iron Maiden had been able to actually stage shows which were accessible to them, thanks to lead singer Bruce Dickinson's ability to lease a Boeing 757 from his then-employer Astraeus Airlines, during the off-season, to fly the band to venues which would have been uneconomical to visit any other way.
    He captained the aircraft himself, as that was his day job at the time. His on-stage athleticism is legendary, and of course, he is well above typical fitness - on tour he trained with several international fencing teams, and was a tough opponent, having been invited to try out for the British Olympic team, he turned down the opportunity for lack of time.
    Of course, he has since repeated the feat but bigger and better, getting type rated to captain a 747 (this time leased through his own aviation company in Cardiff) for their most recent tour. He had to struggle for that one, as just prior to starting the conversion he had to undergo throat cancer treatment, which of course invalidated his flight crew medical certificate, and it was not until he got the all-clear from his oncologist and regained it that he could re-enter training to regain currency for his Airline Transport Pilots License and then get rated for the 747.
    As part of his company's business is training, he may well have been able to remain current on type during the current situation, if a training captain is also available to conduct the 6-monthly check-rides and if he has been able to travel to Gatwick for his regular medical recertification, which must be at least twice a year at his age and with his medical history. He will be getting the maximum level checkup, blood tests, eyesight tests, hearing tests (particularly challenging for a heavy metal singer who has been active for as long as he has) and running on the treadmill to test VO2Max and heart-rate to near exhaustion (if such a thing is possible for him) every time.
    Bruce has a strong connection with the song - he owns and flies to display aerobatics standard a genuine Spitfire, which I have overflown in the air on one of my own flights, above the exclusion zone established by NOTAM (Notice to Airmen) for a display at Duxford, where the Spitfire first entered RAF service in 1936 and which is home to more Spitfires than anywhere else, being where the Imperial War Museum's large collection is held (smaller exhibits are housed at their London headquarters). I'm close enough to watch the displays there from my garden, and the sound or Merlins, Griffins, and other warbird engines is commonplace here as pilots maintain currency and train for displays, and aircraft are test-flown following maintenance or repair - or even complete restoration.
    Unfortunately, I am unlikely to be able to exercise my pilots licenses in either UK or US now, as I cannot pass a medical, and besides, it would be tricky from a wheelchair.

      @lakingpin6370 Před 3 lety +2

      Fantastic comment Phil, I was lucky enough to be at Duxford a few years ago when Bruce displayed his Fokker Dr1 Triplane as part of the great war display team. I was doing the flightline walk in the morning and watched the Catalina land and taxi in, the door opened and out came Bruce, he'd grabbed a lift in it from Cambridge. I went back to my car, grabbed a maiden CD, went back and asked him to sign it. During the day I found a stall selling a corgi model of his triplane, so I bought a couple, after the display had finished Bruce and the rest of the team were pushing their aeroplanes through the crowd into a hanger, I asked him if he needed a hand, he said sure, so I helped him push his Triplane. When we got to the hanger I asked him if he could sign my Triplane, he was really amazed corgi had made a model of his plane and he said it was lovely. I told him I had a spare and he could have it and I gave it him,, he was really humbled and the whole experience made my day, I still have to look at my photos to believe it happened!

      It's great for the song no doubt and my favorite way to start a concert, but an odd choice in India due to the controversy Churchill stirred in the country when he once called Mahatma Gandhi "a seditious Middle Temple lawyer, now posing as a half-naked fakir".

      @@brickcitycomics2135 I don't think the Maiden fans in India minded, and seem to regard it as so much water over the porcelain by now.
      Swapping in a different opener for one gig mid-tour is no simple matter. It certainly isn't impossible, but enough work that I would expect it to have been checked by a local tour manager if anyone thought it was going to be a problem. Clearly, it wasn't!

      @phillee2814 Před rokem +1

      @@andrewbayada2475 Not Ed Force One, as they were both (the first B757 and the later B747) short-term leases, but Iron Maiden did put on a Concert in Sarajevo in the middle of the break up of Yugoslavia, which may be the occasion you are thinking of. They had to be smuggled into the still "hot" zone in the back of a truck. Bruce has also captained repatriation flights on several occasions for holidaymakers trapped in a couple of war zones which have suddenly erupted.

    What I like about iron maiden live albums and DVDs is that they sound like real live, not like the vast majority that are so produced that they sound like a studio album. It all sounds perfect, yes, but it doesn't sound like a real live show, including perfect voices that don't sound like that live.

    For newbies ; That voice heard at the beginning is, (Britain's then PM) W. Churchill's original speech during WW2 Nazi Germany airborne attacks on Britain. This was the inspiration for the song as well..

    You haven't acknowledged that Lady Gaga is a HUGE fan and sees them whenever she can. No sh*t. She's posted tons of pictures at shows and backstage and been photographed wearing Maiden shirts. She said in an interview a few years ago that a friend took her to a show, which she wasn't excited about, and she became a fan by the end of the first song. She's called them the greatest live act in the world. Seriously the only reason I like her.
