Most of them were the aromatic spices produced in southern region of India and since the southern part is surrounded by Indian Ocean, trading business was in a demand there (Since travelling through sea was cheaper than by road or by an aeroplane). Since the trading business used to take place in South India, South Indians were the merchants. Most of Indian merchants from that time were South Indians.
