@@PrettyPennyClub He's saying it's a meritocratic system because the trading histories of popular traders are openly available, allowing the truly most successful traders to be recognized as such. If someone is getting results and their activity is transparent, I don't see why they shouldn't be allowed to manage a fund on behalf of willing investors. Im sure many people, particularly those new to trading, would be separated from their money much more quickly attempting to trade on their own rather than copy trade.

@@numbynumb Fine, and the poor folks who jumped on with less accomplished folks will be slaughtered. You have missed my point tho, the issue isn't with trading or copying people as such, it's the fact etoro push it so hard, despite the stats that around 80% will lose money. So, full in the knowledge that etoro make money per trade, copy trading is promoted with only winning accounts at that time being pushed... there will forever be a stream of hopefuls looking to make money when etoro know fine well they are coming out on top over the long term. Another video incoming perhaps.
In terms of this: "If someone is getting results and their activity is transparent, I don't see why they shouldn't be allowed to manage a fund on behalf of willing investors" - there are good reasons why this industry is regulated, and this isn't.

@@PrettyPennyClub It seems that our politics differ in terms of the degree of nannying that we think the state should be engaging in wrt trading or perhaps, more fundamentally, as to what the role of government ought to be. I mean, why not ban any speculative activities in which the majority of participants lose money? Personally, I think adults have the right to choose how to invest and with whom.
What you're not addressing here is that the people engaging in copy trading on these platforms have the opportunity to make an informed decision when choosing a trader to copy because relevant data is provided. Making these traders visible and this data available is a service these exchange platforms are selling. The market will decide whether there's value in their offerings. I don't see why you feel something's afoul with that. Yes, people are basing their decision on the recent relative success of the traders they're copying but what criteria do you think is a better indicator of probable near future success? Institutional credentials?
You're misrepresenting the relevance of this 80% figure in terms of loss ratio among retails traders. 80% of retail investors lose money, in general. You're presenting it as though it's copy trading, specifically, that's responsible for causing this unfavourable profit/loss ratio among retail traderss. I'd be willing to bet that, if studied properly, copy trading, on average, helps retailer traders to manage risk and produces a more favourable number than 80% in losses for those who make use of it.

You just gotta do some research in who you're copying. I only copy people with a risk score of 3 or lower. More green than red months throughout their years and the lows are within reason compared to their profitable months, percentage wise. Also check if they were profitable in 2022. A bad year for most popular investors. It usually means the persons knows how to handle a shift in the market.

Depends what you are looking for here. Here in the UK there are better options with lower fees and ISA offerings which will keep more of your money in your own pocket with no platform costs and tax advantages. Take a look at Trading 212 or InvestEngine. Some links in the description

I've done copy traiding with etoro 10 years ago in Italy. I invested (gambled) some euros to copy a popular trader. No idea what I was doing. Lost 50% in a few weeks. This was my first financial trauma that kept me away from investing for a decade. I'll never forgive eToro😅

@@PrettyPennyClub I take this to mean that some highly skilled traders will shine through. They will shine through the fees. The other side of the argument is that, if copy traders can consistently make net profits over time, then it's a win/win/win for the copyer, the copyee, and the exchange. Hard to argue with that. The fees the exchange extracts offer a value proposition one is free to either accept or reject. The open access to the real time trading action of highly skilled traders must be worth the cost to many copy traders if they continue to use the platform. No doubt many also take the opportunity to learn through direct observation of a more experienced trader.
