I remember how we watched the Eurovision national preselection. No one knew that a war would begin in a few days. The soloist of the group Kalush wrote a song for his mother, but now it turned out that the track is dedicated to all the women who saved their (and not only) children during the war.

Great that they released the video AFTER THEY WON, and not before. Otherwise many would say they “manipulate” and “speculate” on the current situation in the country to win the contest.
But no.! They shot the video long ago and hold its release and showed it just AFTER they won the Eurovision to show the audience what it’s all about.

This song is not about the war, but about the mother of the vocalist. It was written long before the war. But as the main vocalist Oleh himself said, with the beginning of the war this song took on a new meaning.

I just happened to put my TV on when I saw their Eurovision performance on the 13th of May. As soon as I heard and read the lyrics, it made me emotional. Whenever they sing the Chorus "Stefania Mother", I can feel the emotion in Tima's voice. This song was already so empowering and I immediately thought of what was happening in Ukraine. I browsed about them and come to realize that this song was originally meant for Oleg's mother but now it is for all of Ukraine, especially with this war that is going on. The melody that you hear in the song was inspired by Tima's grandmothers, yet another beautiful and meaningful element added to the song. Everybody needed this empowering song. It's both so beautiful and just so incredibly sad at the same time. The song and performance made me think; "How can you threaten the lives of such beautifully talented people?" And it made me wonder, "Why can't Putin be as peaceful as them?" It sucks. I will never understand why it's okay to commit mass murder without being held accountable for it. These poor innocent people have lost their homes, loved ones, and lives. My heart hurts and my eyes shed tears for Ukraine. Stay strong. We have your back people of Ukraine. 💛💙

They sing about hard things for their hearts, but sing it making fun for everybody. You can really dance with them! And cry at the same time. This year we have strong competition 💪 with a lot of worthy songs. But this year isn't like previous years. I'm happy that European people have worthy values!

Among the heroes of the video there are no men, except for the priest (and except arists of Kalush Orchestra). Only military women. And this is not only a symbol of a female protector for her child. Or a symbol of the motherland-defender for all. Few people know, but there are a lot of women in the Ukrainian army (including among tankers or snipers) - more than in any European country. Only Israel has a slightly higher share, about which everyone knows that their army has 0% gender bias. This tells us a lot not only about the high level of feminism in Ukraine and absolute equality in the perception of women as people who can do anything (Ukraine has long been known for strong matriarchal trends and a woman is considered the basis of the Ukrainian family, which for centuries guaranteed respect for a woman in Ukrainian society). The clip reminds us that WOMAN is Ukraine's secret superweapon, and mothers are superhumans, not only figuratively, but also literally.

It was a unique, colorful and well executed performance. Naturally there were other fantastic performances, great talents but the winner can be only one. I doubt the other performers were any bitter about Ukraine's win. There is one country, however, that is definitely bitter and that's the one that didn't get to sing for being a bloody cannibal. The same country that tried to bring a disabled child, who could hardly sing, to Eurovision 2016, now screams the loudest that it was a "pity" win, showing no shame, just pure hateful jealousy, as always.

For me the track and video provoke a powerful mix of emotions, the vid being much heavier than the song intended initially. I encourage you to give other tracks from Kalush a spin, might also be interesting for a review video. They aren't a one-hit wonder for sure :)

Thank you so much for your support! My family moved from Crimea after russians occupied it to Irpin.. And now 71% of the city is destroyed.. it is ashes.. And so many lifes were taken, so much pain. This song was about the mother of the singer not about the war when it was written. But now everthing is about the war in Ukraine. This is the awful reality.

I had exactly the same reaction, the first time that I watched the video. I also had heard the song several times and I really liked it. Then, the video hit me like a brick! Seeing the horror of the brutality delivered on Ukraine mixed with the artistry of Kalush Orchestra cemented the sound of "Stefania" into my consciousness forever. I know that Ukrainian spirit cannot die and I look forward to visiting a free Ukraine soon.

There was a time when the phrase "Glory to Ukraine" was spoken by a very small number of people due to Soviet repression. And there was a politician who said: "The day will come when one will say Glory to Ukraine, and millions of people will answer him Glory to the Heroes." And now the whole world is saying this motto, it makes me cry, but one hundred percent, the day will come when we will drink, dance, and then we will bring something good for the whole world together with the whole world.
      Glory to the Heroes!
      God bless America!

Thank you so much for the reaction! Victory at the song contest didn't really matter to us - it was important to make the world know, people know what is happening! The video shows this well. The compassion of all people of good will is what matters to us. That we are not alone in this fight against evil .. That gives us strength.

You are such an empathetic person❤️ Thank you so much for such a sincere and emotional review🙏🏻I think that the victory of Kalush Orchestra is, first of all, the way that Europe chose to confess its love and support to Ukraine. This is more than just a musical victory, this is a victory of the real values that unite all of us. It's our common victory.
Much love to you from Ukraine 💙💛

There is three stories about children. The first girl is returned to her mother. The second one is brought by her mother to safe place so mother could go to war. And the third story is about killed girl who's body is brought to the church for burial. And if you look carefully not long after that mother dies too and they meet each other in that church
