  • MPC Live 2 tutorial, in this video I'm showing you how to do the secret auto chop technique. ALL MPC's can do this secret auto chop technique, sometimes called J Dilla auto chop or velocity chop. J Dilla probably did this on his MPC 3000, but can be done on all models since the MPC 60 - which was the first MPC. I'm showing you how to do this on the MPC Live 2 - it will work the same way on all the other moderntrtyjnkjjkhtttrfdwq MPC's (MPC One, thhhMPC X, MPC Touch, MPC Live). The principle of this auto chop technique is the same on the older MPC's but may have some unique setting to that MPC that need to be correct in order for this to work.

For users of old MPCs (at least for the 2000/2000xl):
    Keep in mind that you
    1. loose the ability to play the sample at different volume cause every change you do to the velocity will change the samplestart point ionstead of the volume (this also means that the overall velocity of a track Velo%: parameter will change the start of the chops)
    2. With a samplelength over ....as far as I remember it was about 4 seconds, you won't be able to 'reach' the parts behind this point cause the 127 velocity steps are spread only over the 4 seconds. Velocity 127 will be the original samplestartpoint. Velocity 1 will set the startpoint to about 4 seconds and play the sample from there.
    3. The steps are not spread in equal samplelength. While the velocityrange from 127 to about 100 shift the samplestart in small amounts (high resolution) the lower velocityrange will shift in bigger steps (lower resolution)
So yes. It is a nice method to work with the machine in a creative way but if you want to be in full control of samplestart when chopping timing-critical stuff like a drumbreak this method won't make you happy.
It's a method to play around with and get inspired IMO.

Tip to remove the pops when applying the auto chop method to a sample:
In Program edit for the pad you have the sound assigned to change the Attack in the Amp envelope from 0 to 5 and the pops/ clicks when the sample is triggered throughout the 16 levels will go away.

This is not how J Dilla chopped samples but cool technique nonetheless. Check out Dan Charnas’s book “Dilla Time”. It breaks down his techniques with insight from people that actually knew and worked with him.

    • @ceciliafbrown373

I've found a way but its not the same as the MPC... In Simpler use slice mode and set slice by to beat divisions to 16th and playback to thur.
If you have Push all 64 pads will be hi lighted which you can play using the pads. However this method is not using velocity. But hopefully you should be able to figure out some chops that work.

@@ceciliafbrown373 if I slice the 64 chops to a Midi track, velocity will automatically be available, right?
