  • Took the excellent forecast and holiday weekend as an excuse to go backpack around the Wild River Wilderness for four days. I started out mid afternoon on Friday proceeding about 8 miles through some epic New England Fall beauty, and some very marshy trail before making camp.
    Day 2 I awoke to some warmer weather and proceeded up a couple of mountain peaks and hiking along a ridge line before hitting camp and experiencing quite the rain storm over night.
    Day 3 with the winds from the night before I awoke to a dry tent and temps back down into the 40s. I took my time on this day just enjoying the trail and scenery. Stopping and admiring everything along the way. I ended up finding a stealth spot and camped out for the night.
    Waking up to Day 4 with freezing temps but a fairly quick and easy 5ish mile hike back out to my car.

    A lot of people have been asking about trail names, and peak names and why I have not been mentioning them in videos lately. I have addressed this in some previous videos but I will copy and paste from another comment. I hope you all understand.
    "I have been purposefully leaving the names of the peaks and trails I have been taking out of the videos lately. I didn't / don't want my videos to possibly contribute to the overcrowding and literal trashing of the trails thats been occurring lately.
    With everyone trying to escape outside since covid it appears nobody did research on the basic principals of hiking / backpacking or the principals of Leave No Trace. If they did then they just don't seem to care. The amount of toilet paper, feces, and trash I have seen literally on or next to the trail in the last couple weeks is absolutely mind boggling.
    I am hoping to add the names to the trails and peaks back in eventually hopefully once things kind of settle down up there a bit. I know a lot of people use the videos to plan their adventures. I did the same when I started hiking up in the Whites. Its part of the reason I started this channel.
    With that said, I have a video up in some way shape or form for I believe every 48 4k and 52 wav peak. Some maybe in my AT series, and also my Pemi Loop series"

      IMHO the time has come to go back to naming names. Last weekend I did the Kinsmans and Moosilauke, and the number of hikers seemed to be back to normal. Also, I saw no trash anywhere along the way.

    • @ChrisGoesOutdoors
      @ChrisGoesOutdoors  Před 3 lety

      @@TheNeoMetric It was my understanding that the wilderness areas were supposed to be pretty unmaintained trail wise but I dont think the trail was bad at all. There is certainly some spots that were challenging navigating but I think a lot of that had to do with the leaf cover over much of the trail. But as far as actual trail conditions things looked pretty great to me.

    Thanks for taking me with you. Love the relaxed attitude. So many times hikes are dictated by the need to cover x number of miles or getting to a waypoint by some arbitrary time. Wonderful to see you really enjoying the experience. Inspirational.

    Great video - took me back 30 years to my peak bagging days in the Whites. Loved the "socks on a sunny rock" to dry things out - been there, done that. I know COVID has driven everyone outdoors - the popular AT trailheads in CT are overflowing with cars every weekend. Fortunately I haven't seen too many signs of people trashing the trail or campsites, but I can definitely see how a place as popular as the Whites could quickly get overloaded. Thanks for putting this out there - an hour of my time well spent.

    To address your comment on trash and such - while I agree with you completely, keep in mind that it also might be more noticeable since trail maintenance, especially on secondary/tertiary trails, is extremely limited. In that vein, trash is not dealt with. I get that it shouldn’t be there in the first place, but I’m just giving you another perspective on why it could be more noticeable.
    Anyhoo, take it easy! See you on the trails!

    Fantastic trip, amazing colors and weather! I just read your pinned comment and I am in full agreement with the state of things on the trails. I have seen way more trash and just overall lack of concern for the areas I've been hiking in. My last trip I wound up with a good sized bag of garbage that I packed out. The trip video I'm working on now unfortunately does need some tagging of peaks (Lake George 12ster Challenge) but moving forward I plan on eliminating a lot of the tagging I do in places that really don't need the extra attention.

      @ChrisGoesOutdoors  Před 3 lety

      I’ve been using the nitecore nu25 which is usb rechargeable so no extra batteries needed. Just recharge off the external battery I usually carry. For winter tho I will bring along a standard battery powered head lamp and usually just keep extra batteries elasticd together in my electronics bag

    Praise and a suggestion.
    Hi Chris! I greatly enjoyed this video, especially since a friend and I backpacked this area last weekend (Columbus / Indigenous Peoples weekend). Loved the storm footage and your expressions and changing clothes on a frigid morning 😁. We heard that it rained hard Saturday night and that's when I'm guessing you were there. For the record, we started at the Bog Brook Trailhead on Sunday and spent the night at Perkins Notch Tentsite. The next day we hiked up the Rainbow Trail to Carter Dome. It got down to 30° on Sunday night at the tentsite. Our weather was good and we saw a tame pair of Spruce Grouse on the trail and Gray Jays that demanded to be hand-fed (we complied). My giving these details segways into my suggestion. I think you're overdoing it with your new policy of not naming trails and mountains in your videos. I truly believe that the ChrisGoesOutdoors channel is not going to increase foot traffic in any significant way by saying where you are hiking. And not telling us where you are, for me anyway, detracts from the enjoyment. So I would very respectfully ask that you at least reconsider your policy of not saying where you are in the videos. That said, I greatly enjoyed it and appreciate you taking the time you took to make this video.

      I have definitely gave consideration to re-adding the names and probably will at some point.
      I included the names of the mountains in one of the videos out of my hikes this year. I genuinely wanted to see if anyone mentioned going up to hike the mountain after I posted. I had multiple people message me within that following week that they went and checked out that specific peak after watching my video. Those are just the people that messaged me. Never mind people that may have just went and checked out the mountain and not said anything to me.
      With that said, I know I am not sending an army of people to a specific peak or that I am the be all end all of how people choose what to hike in New Hampshire but there came a point when it felt like, and continues to feel like, the right thing to do.
      With the recent massive increase in people hiking up there and the issues with overcrowding, trash, and disrespectful hiking behaviors and with posting videos to the Internet in my case to an audience of close to 17,000, many of which are hikers in the New England area, plus whoever else happens across the videos on CZcams, I feel the need to take what I believe is the responsible approach of leaving the names out for now.
      Greatly do appreciate you watching the video. Sounds like a good trip! I am actually hoping at some point to work my way back up there and do similar. Stay at perkins, go up rainbow over carter dome, go over to height and down black angel

      @@ChrisGoesOutdoors Thanks very much for the thoughtful explanation and I respect your reasoning. During COVID, we've all had to make various kinds of decisions that we haven't had to make previously. Not easy. If I remember correctly, you live near the Blue Hills as I do. • @ChrisGoesOutdoors
      @ChrisGoesOutdoors  Před 3 lety +1

      Ramen is light, inexpensive, calorie dense, easy to cook, easy to clean, can cold soak if necessary, can even eat raw if for some odd reason you had too. Put in quarter to half a packet of flavoring as to not overdose on MSG / Sodium and still tastes pretty much the same. Just works. Pasta sides I used to bring are kind of a pain and not that great flavor wise. Have gotten fairly sick of instant potatoes and mountain house / freeze dried are obnoxiously expensive comparatively
