  • In Episode 115 the guys has been contemplating using a range of mechanics that are common to boardgames but unusual in minis games. They thought other people would like to contemplate it also, so they decided to record them doing so as part of what will hopefully be a series of conversations beginning with Deck Building.

Definitely some interesting ideas here. Now I'm considering a skirmish game where each figure has it's own deck of good and bad cards that get mixed in a deck for the game. You draw a hand and each player activates a figure by spending a card related to it with appropriate bonuses and negatives. Leaders might let you search your deck for cards or trash cards that you don't want. Some units might cause the player to keep trash cards or even fill the hand with cards that can't do anything until the player can dump it with an ability they have.

Personally a huge fan of Arctic Scavengers and the decisions the deck building forces in that.

Flesh and blood, the cards played need to be paid with cards that go on the bottom of your deck. Weaker cards give more resources, good representation of a fighter getting tired and getting less effective attacks

First time I experienced a deck building game years ago it blew my mind lol, can't believe I never thought to mix it with mini wargaming!

I was thinking about using a deck of tarot cards for some campaign stuff for a game I was working on. As the base rules, there are no mages, but if your Warband has a mage, then your opponent also gets a mage, then there's kinda this drafting minigame before the battle, where the Minor Arcana cards are spells that can be cast during the battle, but the Major Arcana cards are scenarios/alternate rules, such as the Devil making the person with the most objective points lose the scenario, or the Lovers making two units on opposite sides unable to attack each other, or even attack friendly units over their "love."

Tarot cards are certainly an interesting choice, they open up a whole bunch of options.

One the huge things about custom cards is that you can give someone the rules on the card exactly where they need it. You can have a simple set of core rules, then everything has special exceptions but because the rules are on the thing that you are using to do the thing and you aren't flipping back and forth through a book the cognative overhead is massively reduced. It's a bit like you are giving each player a custom rulebook that they can edit during the course of the game.
I enjoy summoner wars, which uses placed cards as the units which move around and attack on a grid. So it has some of the feeling of a minis game albeit on a small grid, but since all the rules for the units are written right on the cards, i can get people to play it who wouldn't read a faction list

Yeah, it certainly can have that effect, if you have the component range to allow it. At the same time though, I can learn all the rules in a core set, but with cards, everyone has to actually read the cards, and inevitably someone doesn't.

Isn't army building like deck building? Also, there is a bunch of cards video games where you have cards to summon and buff minions that then play on a tactical board which could easily translate into a skirmish miniature game. On a super simple level, you could also count things like activation mechanic of Star Wars Legion where you shuffle tokens for activating your units. You could have those mixed with special powers and your deck could evolve based on your army or scenario special rules

Well, deck construction is different from deck building, I think deck construction is close to army building, but deck building less so. I think there are a range of interesting deck building mechanics that could work in a minis game.
