Sounds like the bass is trying to say something at 0:33 . Bass: I've got something I want to say. Piano: Wha-at's that? Bass: Why don't you call the other guys first. Piano Fo-or What? Bass: So I can tell you all at once. Piano: No-o way! Bass: Fo-or Good-ness sa-akes, man! Piano: So what? Bass: Hey, guys I've got to something to say. Others: So-o What? Bass: I think it's time I left the band now. Others: No-o Way! ..and they eventually try to talk him into staying.
A true American Masterpiece. Best selling jazz album of all time. No multi-tracking. No auto tune. One take. White and black alike playing together, appreciated by the entire world. This is AMERICAN music.
American music? Maybe. It doesn't change the fact the roots were buried far before in Africa and Europe. Of course it is a masterpiece and one of the greatest jazz albums of all time but don't try and take ownership as 'American' music. It makes you sound like a fool.
Err... It is American Music. Neither Africa nor Europe invented Jazz, or even Blues for that matter. Yes, yes, everything influences everything else, but the fusion of classical music with blues improvisation is a purely American creation. Sorry dude, just how it is.
For some reason this gives me this scene in my head of a someone following another person in the downtown area of a big city and it's a rainy dreary day and the downtown area is packed. I imagine they end up at a crowded coffee shop and the entire time inside the place, they're trying to keep their eye on who they are following all the while they are surrounded by oblivious happy people, drinking their coffee and enjoying their day.
First year I started to learn jazz music 20 years ago, our professor told us to listen Kind of blue and pick up Miles' solo. This album has changed my life too... Everything's at its place in this whole masterpiece. Thx Gary Brunton
The great magnificent, Miles Davis, may he R.I.P. I remember running to my beloved dad's house, and sit on the floor and try to figure out life. My B.dad asked me what was wrong, I told him nothing, then he would go and make coffee. Whenever I would break up with a guy, I always became so sad. When I listened to this song, it was as smooth as silk, and gentle for my nerves. There will never be another Miles Davis. And as the song says, "So What."
+Adam Vogel the bass on the original lp is much fatter warmer & louder cause digital tech restricts the bass output severely.buy a record deck & hear everything peace
'Kind of Blue' was really a masterpiece. Some were sooo smoooth the sounds just kind of slid into your head without any conscious effort but others could just Bogart on through, welcome or not!
the first SAX, solo, my friend - It's Coltrane on tenor. I'm always amazed by the completely different approaches that the three horn players take on this tune, and how well they all work together. Miles is so chilled and melodically and rhythmically simple, while Coltrane plays in his usual balls-to-the wall busy way and Cannonball grooves to the nines, as per usual.
THIS IS A CLASSIC, MY FATHER RELIGIOUSLY PLAYED THIS SONG EVERY WEEKEND, WHILE ME AND HIM LISTEN TO JAZZ ALL WEEKEND LONG, DRINKING BEER AND JUST HAVING A CONVERSATION, SURE MISS HIM AND THOSE DAYS, HIM AND MILES WILL ALWAYS BE IN MY HEART. JAZZ LIVES
incomparable cool jazz des années 60 !! Vinyle cité en discographie....Miles fut un précurseur dans de nombreux domaines.....Véritable moment de détente avec un bon verre et...une jolie nana bien sûr ....A+
A perfect song to wake up to on a sunday morning ... semi cold and drizzling outside your window with a slight hint of frost on the glass ... as you take your first sip of freshly brewed coffee for the day .... Priceless
I don't have the words to describe how wonderful this is. Six musical geniuses at the height of their creative powers. March 2 1959 was surely one of the greatest days in the history of music.
Wow...all the comments here are just pseudo-esoteric mumbo jumbo. Can't we all just agree that no matter the personality, Miles Davis was - yes, even according to his peers, a genius. He cut new ground, worked with countless esteemed musicians, and has been credited with influencing a myriad of others, across genres other than jazz. So just sit back and chill. To everything else "So What"
+Kingscrib I've never heard anyone dispute this man's genius--it's what makes things like pointing out his shitty personality worth pointing out. Why anyone would bother to focus on that while listening to this is beyond me though
Who and what type of supposedly intelligent humans are the 550 people down voting this and how does this video only have 18k upvotes with 5.5 million views? I know that classic jazz isn't as understood as it once was but this song is beautiful and beyond classic!
Disparity in views and likes is common in music videos as they are played multiple times by the same person and usually part of a playlist , just running in the background
Dude, considering what was happening at the time - segregation and such, the civil rights act hadn't even been passed! - A black man making music with a white man was BIG.
Bill Cort Not like it wasn't happening before. It's not even a first in Jazz. I think the earliest example of a white Jazz musician controversially going out of their way to make music with black musicians was back in the 1920's with Bix Beiderbecke.
lacking the context in which a great piece of art is made is fine, you can still appreciate it. some people find that the context around the production of an experience deepens their appreciation of it. whatever helps you feel a thing!
I played sax in High School Band. This song reminds me of life. The highs and lows are there, but it's all a melody that blends together to make something very worthwhile.
miles & company are/were on fire on "right off" from his tribute to jack johnson. But here, THE MANis as cool as anyone can be. Miles is/was/will always be amazing.
The beauty of it all begins with the piano. Then, the bass..THAT BASS! The passion starts. And at 1:32, as Miles enters, it becomes sublime. 'tranes solo just keeps one in that ....heaven. And finally, Adderly entrances even the angels. And again, Evans' appears. His piano overtakes the Almighty. This is as perfect a musical performance, by a truly great ensemble, as any. by anyone, ever. Ever.
I love this type of jazz. When I listen to this it just makes me want to expand more musically when I playing guitar. Such farther distances, music is played in a limitless manner.
At first when I started listening to this album I wasn't really feeling it yet, so I just would put it in the background, but the more I listen to it the more I love it. It's just fantastic music.
Ah this whole album is amazing. I love listening to it late at night and early in the morning when it's still dark. I'm 16, wish more people my age were into jazz.

I am sure they had their moments of disagreements, musicians can be very tough to deal with but It had a lot to do with the character of their souls, yes they both were flawed, there was/is so much in the way of sedating / drugs in the music world then and now. They were still heavenly creatures, sorely missed. Let us not see the color of our skins, but the character of our hearts.

This ad with the queen and her marching band, and then, Miles Davis, this is the greatest combination I can imagine.
this song reflects the 50's and the 60's !

I find when you know the physics behind something it becomes even more beautiful and even more amazing.
True
I know just enough to know that I don't understand. But am all the more envious because of it.
If there ever was a tune that defined Jazz for me, then this is it.
Emotion and focus. This tune still sends shivers down my spine.
incomparable cool jazz des années 60 !! Vinyle cité en discographie....Miles fut un précurseur dans de nombreux domaines.....Véritable moment de détente avec un bon verre et...une jolie nana bien sûr ....A+
miles was a man who knew how to toot his own horn.

Greatest Of All Time = G.O.A.T.

I dedicate this to my Uncle George; rest in peace.
I wanna film a "Film Noir" right now.
This tune is one of my favorite by Sir Miles Davis. I listened to this tune often on my CD in my vehicle.
A perfect song to wake up to on a sunday morning ... semi cold and drizzling outside your window with a slight hint of frost on the glass ... as you take your first sip of freshly brewed coffee for the day .... Priceless

Miles Davis Is and will remain The BEST Jazz Musician and Chef d orchestre of All Times
This reminds me of the GURU's jazzamatazz album or a Spike Lee movie.
Spike Lee,lol

53 years later... the masterpiece and the beauty of miles davis and his gift lives on.
Why make such a big deal on the race of the people making the music? This is about the music, not the guys race. why can't this be realized?

This album remains a classic that time only makes better like fine wine.;-)
One thing I remember about growing up was Sunday Jazz on NPR. Enjoying some coffee and Miles Davis today, it's perfect.
