    A note about Franky forming the Franky Family that's easy to miss among all the hecticness of the scene: Franky took in orphans and outcasts and miscreants, specifically. Because that's what Tom did for him. It's not that the Franky Family wasn't the reason he was determined to stay and it was about his atonement instead, they're one in the same. The Franky Family was explicitly and intentionally a part of that atonement, being able to Be Tom for these people after he was responsible for taking Tom away.

    Excuse this long rant, but this episode always makes me want to get it off my chest.
    One Piece is one of my favorite series. But this approach was pretty disappointing to me. I kinda hate how sexual violence is played off as a joke when it comes to men. Cutting off, maiming, kicking, crushing, what have you - all of it seems to be completely fine to make light of when it comes to male genitalia. So much so that talk show hosts can freely laugh at and make fun of real men that have had it happen to them. Yes, that happened. And people in the audience laughed.
    So I never find jokes like these funny; there just is no humor in it and it only really reminds me of the appalling lack of empathy there seem to be surrounding this. I've even seen this attitude from female nurses treating young boys. It just sickens me. It's almost like we've dehumanized this body part completely. Can you think of any other body part where you can joke about mutilation without it even being a dark joke? And it's a sexual organ no less.
    But beyond my own, admittedly, rather rare reservations about this, it just doesnt feel like it fits Robin's character to smugly hurt one of her greatest benefactors like this. Franky did so much for her at a time when she was also being self-destructive. But he was always gentle with her.
    The entire thing with the Straw Hats is that they all seek freedom and Luffy is the one who upholds this principle the most. He let's people make their own choices, like he did when Usopp decided to leave. So sexually torturing a potential crewmate into joining feels completely out of character to me. It felt like it was played up for laughs at a time that should have been emotional.
    Sure, he had to be convinced, but through his friends and family, as was shown in the latter half of this episode. Would the outcome of this episode have been any different had they just had those flashbacks and those people talking to him without his balls being crushed? In fact, I think that it would have been more impactful.
    And regarding the whole "she only did it once in the beginning, he is pretending to be hurt" - I am assuming that Oda has never hurt his balls before lol. Anyone who has knows that the pain after being hit once lingers for potentially a LONG time. It's the pain that comes after the hit that hurts the most.

    • @pdas4182
      @pdas4182 Před rokem

      While I understand what you're saying, it's really not the case in one piece though. The same can be said about lots of previous scenes too, even the last 2 episodes of "Franky running naked on the streets". That was unnecessary. I'm sure Oda could've make a different way to bring Franky to the ship without using nakedness. But did it take away from the enjoyment? No. Same with this episode. the ball crushing was in the episode and it was funny, but did it take away from the emotional aspects of the second half? Hell no. I remember that I cried in this episode too when the flashbacks hit.
      Also, it's not just sexual violence against men that's played off as a funny thing. I mean, Sanji is a full on simp (sure he respects women in some ways, but come on. Irl, a character like him definitely getting consequences). Another character goes around asking the colour of woman's panties, don't even get me started on the things a pervert villain does in the next arc. And most of it is played off as a joke. So it's not just violence against men that's like this in this anime.
      Another thing, it never was out of character to do this. Zoro and Sanji rejected when Luffy asked to join the crew too. But he rejected their rejection. But here, even Iceberg asks him to take him by force and Luffy knows that Franky wants to join, but is saying no because he is guilty for something (Tom's death). So in this case, it makes perfect sense to force him. Again, it makes perfect sense that Robin's the one that does it since we already know that she's the ruthless one in the crew in terms of these things. Any other character, and this wouldn't make sense.
      It's easy to write this off as a fun scene. It's not just a fun scene either. It showed a bit more of Robin's character (willing to rough up people for the captain), Franky's character (hiding his tears in the "pain"), Luffy's childishness (thinking they were going to make him less of a man), etc. I saw this scene and saw Robin as the mom/big sister of the group (or atleast for luffy). Luffy (the kid) wanted him on the ship and she was like "Oh, you want him. Then I'll try to get him". So the scene had purpose too.
      In conclusion, this scene is well placed in this arc. Sure, taking it away won't change the outcome. But keeping it in gave the fun it needed contrast the emotional scenes that came later on, and also gave some subtle inputs about the character's personality.

    • @_Lumiere_
      @_Lumiere_ Před rokem

      @@pdas4182 I disagree. It took away the impact of the scene for me and it felt off-putting. I hate the comparison to the female characters being perved on, because Sanji never touches anyone or hurts them. In fact, he only spoils women with good food and compliments. Brook doesnt touch anyone either. Besides, none of those things are shown as "good". Here, Franky actually got sexually accosted and it was portrayed as a good thing.
      If Robin is the kind of character that's willing to sexually torture a person who saved her to get her way, then that means that she sucks as a character. She is my favorite character, so I hated seeing that. "Roughing" someone up doesnt involve sexual violence unless you are the absolute worst villain.
      The only reason this scene exists is for laughs. It adds nothing to the characters except negative traits. This is overlooked because people, such as yourself, see sexual violence against men as just a joke. Honestly, I get that, most people think like that. I just cant. Seen too much shit in my life and the attitude towards it makes me a bit sick.
      All this being said, I dont hate One Piece for this one scene. Far from it, it's probably my favorite show. But, if I could, I would definitely change this scene to something else. In my own headcanon, Robin never does this and her character feels consistent if you ignore that this ever happened.

    • @pdas4182
      @pdas4182 Před rokem

      @@_Lumiere_ I'm a huge Sanji fan and he's probably my top 5 anime character ever, but even I know that what he's doing is not right. Going around holding girl's hands (strangers) without permission, rushing in to see women in pool, the nosebleeds, you do know what happens in wano in the woman's bath, right? (not saying anything more as it's spoiler). Look, I know Sanji and Brook aren't being physical, but don't think that harassing women is just limited to touching or hurting them. What they're doing is harassment and I take it lightly since it's an anime, but irl I wouldn't put up with it if someone behaved like this with my sister/daughter.
      And why make this scene a sexual thing? Nami hits Luffy all the time, other characters fight each other all the time, they show them bruised and and bleed. So if you don't have problem with that, why have problem with this? And seriously, sexual torture? Wow. Then in that case, Nami's a bad character since she beats up Luffy even if he saved her village. Chopper's a bad character since he fights with Zoro but he saved Dalton, Sanji's a bad charcter since he hits Luffy even though he saved Baratie, (should I go on?). For Robin, it was just a way to convince let Franky's guard down and it worked too. If you think she's ungrateful to Franky because of this? Wow, no words.
      Sure, you can say that about the scene that it was just for comedy, but I've already mentioned my interpretation of it. People like yourself just take it at face value and don't understand how it gives better insights into the characters (as I've mentioned in my previous comment).
      Honestly, I've seen and experienced shit too. But if can't separate fiction and reality and think this is some serious sexual violence or something, then I suggest you stop watching this altogether.

    • @_Lumiere_
      @_Lumiere_ Před rokem

      @@pdas4182 I seriously cannot even comprehend how you fail to see the difference between a cartoonish bonk on the head and crushing someone's balls. Yes, that is sexual torture. Imagine one of the crewmates kicking or grabbing Nami in the crotch, would that still be lighthearted "beating up"? If we cant even agree on the fact that there is a difference between a normal fight and the violence that involves a person's genitals, then this conversation is pointless.
      Sanji being a perv is shown as his flaw. He constantly suffers the consequences for it. And he never touches anyone, let alone in a sexually explicit way that would hurt a woman. Since you brought up the whole "if someone behaved like this with your daughter/sister thing", what about your son? Would you laugh your ass of at some woman grabbing and crushing your son's balls? I guess a lot of people would. Which is what I find insane. The bottom line is that Sanji constantly gets his comeuppance for what he does and it is never shown as a good thing. And all that he really does is simp for women and give them good food.
      The issue that I have with this scene is that there is zero reason for Robin to even be remotely violent with Franky. Sanji hitting Luffy is a thing because Luffy is doing something to annoy him. Same with Nami. That's lighthearted slapstick fighting. This is a serious, emotional moment and Robin is doing it to achieve a goal. My idea of Robin as a character simply doesnt work with her sexually assaulting Franky (yes, that's what this is, despite whatever weird excuse you may have to cope about it), the one who saved her and has done nothing to annoy her.
      And stop being so dramatic. Just because I dislike one scene in an anime of over 1000 episodes doesnt mean that I hate the show, as I've already stated multiple times. I can separate fiction from reality, but this is different. Portraying sexual violence against men as a "joke" has been done for a LONG time in multiple forms of media. It's probably part of the reason why so many people, such as yourself, dont even consider something like in this episode sexual violence at all. The issue is not that it is portrayed, but that it is shown as a good thing in the narrative. If it was portrayed as wrong, then I'm totally fine with it being portrayed.
      It's one thing to have Sanji be a perv, never touch a woman and still be berated for it, clearly showing that it is wrong. It's an entirely different thing to have Robin crush Franky's testicles to force him to join the crew, clearly being shown as if it was "necessary" and a good thing.
      I kept watching the show way passed this and I know of all the things that Sanji does. Nothing comes even close to this and none of it is ever shown as a good thing. And I'll keep watching this show because it is otherwise one of my favorites. There, does that make you happy? You seemed so worried that my criticism would ruin the show. It doesnt. At least for me.

    • @pdas4182
      @pdas4182 Před rokem

      @@_Lumiere_ Honestly, I can't even comprehend how you fail to see it's a cartoonish thing and not sexual violence.
      And yes, I'd be angry if someone pervs on my daughter/sister like Sanji does. And I'll be angry if someone grabs my son's balls like Robin did to Franky. But when Sanji pervs on women in the anime, I laugh because I know it's an anime, not sexual violence. Same with this scene of Franky because it's an anime.
      So, you don't remember scenes when Nami's or other female character's breasts are pressed/squeezed? Isn't that sexual violence? There are lots of instances when there's "sexual violence " against women which involves touching. But it's an anime. We laugh it off.
      Robin did what she thought would make him let his guard down. Franky was declining the offer to join the crew and almost everyone else in the city wanted the crew to take him by force. So she did it. The scene served it purpose. It very well aligns with what Robin is since she always has the dark thoughts, ideas, etc. And if she didn't care about Franky enough to make him join the crew, she wouldn't have even bothered to do it.
      I'm glad you like one piece too. Good to hear that.
