  • Hi all, a short video on how to perform using live looping in Cubase Pro (am sure it also works for Elements and Artist versions). I find this a great way of jamming and experimenting to come up with new ideas. You can keep overdubbing and build some really creative pieces - it really sparks the creativity. If you don't know how, watch this short vid and then give it a go!

    • @splootyvision
      @splootyvision  Před 18 dny +1

      Hi - In terms of doing this in Cubase you can pretty much leave the MIDI channel input and output to 'any' for each of the MIDI tracks, no real need to assign the actual midi channel that the hardware synth is set to. All the synths are connected to the pc via usb and you just choose the relevant instrument as your input/output for each midi track you set up. Hope that helps 🙂

      @splootyvision  Před rokem

      Yep can do with audio as well, have copy pasted a reply I gave to someone else on the same subject which also contains a link to someone else doing a youtube video which demonstrates the sort of thing you may be after doing. PS Not sure on the question on the midi channels, you can have umlimited midi tracks in cubase pro (lower versions may be limited to 64 or 128 I believe) and there are 16 MIDI channels so can have 16 instruments all on different MIDI channels.
      Anyhow, for the audio looping..........Pretty similar set up to what I showed. You'd need to set up an audio track for each of the instrument / vocal layers and then set the loop length and activate the cycle function as I did. Hit record on the first track and perform your loop. Just before the first loop ends you need to arm the second track (otherwise the first track will then start overdubbing) and record your second vocal/instrument. Continue this process for as many tracks as you have and once its built up you can then solo and mute sections in and out as needed. Tbh for all this to work you really need either a touch screen, or you could use the avid control app on an ipad (I have a video on that), or something like a Korg Nanokontrol - so that all the transport buttons are easily and quickly accessible. Heres a link to a video of someone doing I believe exactly the sought of thing you are tring to achieve.

    Thank you so much! Just one more Question, that you could maybe help me with. In the loop you're playing at the end, you are using, the same instrument (your black piano) for two different sounds. How is it you re not automatically triggering, the midi Track, you used right before? Is it possible to somehow live loop different tracks with the same instrument, without triggering all the tracks at once?
    I hope you get what I mean. I really wanne get into live looping, but I just dont have the money for several different instruments to route the tracks.

    • @splootyvision
      @splootyvision  Před rokem +1

      Hi there the piano sound from the black keyboard on the bottom is actually the same piano sound just sounds a little different as first time round the loop I was playing chords lower down the register and second time round the melody is played over the top, just higher up the keys. Basically you can record a loop and then as that loop plays back just play more notes over the top and it effectively adds them to the loop. Evidently in this example I’m using multiple instruments; first the drums and cymbals from the Spark Drum machine, then the bass from the System 1, the piano chords from the Yamaha MOX, then piano melody (same sound) from the Yamaha MOX, then a synth pad from the Matrixbrute at the back, a synth melody from the Deepmind 12 and then finally a sort of synth brass sound using the white Keylab midi keyboard which is triggering a VST (something from the Arturia V Collection if I recall). If you wanted to do this but with just one keyboard there are a couple of ways you could do that. One would be using VST instruments and just set up all the instruments/sounds you want to use and then arm/disarm each of them as you record. I.e arm the record button on the first track and record your melody, then disarm it and arm the next one - the first one will continue to play and the second one will now record alongside it - then disarm this second track and move to the 3rd etc etc. Alternatively you could do this using just the voices on one keyboard, but takes a bit more dexterity and requires to record as ‘Audio’ tracks instead of MIDI. For example set up 4 AUDIO tracks, arm the first track to record and play your loop, then disarm that track, arm the second track AND change the sound on the keyboard, then play the second loop with the new voice, repeat for as many tracks as you want. The key to all of this is that each ‘sound’ has to be on a different track (whether that be MIDI or AUDIO) and then you can layer as many tracks as you want 🙂. Hope that helps, Cheers.

    How do you do it with Software Instruments?

    • @splootyvision
      @splootyvision  Před 11 měsíci

      Pretty much the same. Set up as many VST tracks as you need with the relevant instruments/sounds. Set the length of the loop as in the video. Then just play each instrument at a time to build the loop. I would assume if using VSTs that will just be triggering them all from the same midi keyboard, so only difference hear would be rather than arming all tracks to record at the same time; you would only arm the track you want to record and once you've got that loop going disarm it and arm the next instrument. Hope that makes sense 🙂

    Hey! Can I loop my guitar?

    • @splootyvision
      @splootyvision  Před 2 lety

      Yes, you certainly can. Pretty much the same principle. Just set up as many audio tracks as you want to loop and then switch between them. So for example arm the first track and strum a chord loop for the length loop you've set and then at the end of the loop switch to the next track and record another loop over the top of the first. The key thing is each loop has to be on a different track in Cubase, otherwise as it loops round you'll just record over what you've just played. It takes a bit of dexterity of practice if you're looking for a smooth live performance (and if that's the goal probably better with a dedicated loop pedal/station). Tbh I pretty much use it for just jamming to build up ideas that may use later to form a song.
      (PS you could possibly use a midi foot pedal to switch between tracks in Cubase, something I haven't tried but might give a go 🙂)

    Can something like this be done with normal audio tracks? I'm looking to see if it's possible to use cubase as one of those loopstations people use to layer multiple vocals/physical instruments on top of each other in a live performance. Like let's say i have 5 audio tracks, on the first loop it records to the first one, second loop the first one is simply played back but you're recording to the second one, etc. From your knowledge is something like this possible?

      Indeed that is entirely possible, since making this video I have got a Keystep37 midi controller which allows me to do just that. From it I can control all my hardware synths from one keyboard and change between them on the fly, also using it to control VSTs. Got a couple of other videos on the channel that demonstrate the possibilities and controlling it all through midi connections. Of course all this could be done without any hardware synths and just a midi controller and VSTs.

      Hi there, as far as I'm aware you can only have one project active at a time in cubase. So......easiest options would be either 1. Download and use Audacity (its free and is effectively a very simple daw/audio recorder). You can then play/perform your loop in cubase and record the live audio into Audacity which you can then export out as a wave or mp3 file. Or, 2. Record the audio and your camera footage at the same time into OBS (again it's free). The good thing with OBS is you don't then have to sync the audio and video footage later as it's all recorded together in one place :-). OBS is how I recorded this video.

      PS There's some other vids on my channel about recording using OBS i.e. how to stream the audio from your DAW into OBS, how to deal with sync issues between audio and video, and how to set up cameras (or multiple cameras) in OBS. If you've got a phone and a camera you could link them both to OBS and capture video footage from different angles at the same time :-) all automatically synced with the music you are playing.

      @splootyvision  Před rokem

      Hi there, have you set each of the instruments set up as audio tracks? If so then yep everything will get recorded to each track (unless you only 'arm' one track at a time to record). You'll see in the video I've got them set up as instrument (VST) tracks or midi tracks. The drums are a VST, the MOX is set up as a VST and the other hardware synths are set up as midi tracks. It can be done as audio tracks but as say you have to arm/disarm the record button on each track as it loops round, so only one active at a time. However with midi or vst tracks you can just arm them all and let it keep looping round. Hope that made sense? :-)
