Coming out is a big moment. You're letting someone else into a part of your life that few have tread-a secret that you might have carried a long time. Some of you may have lied, pretended to be something you're not. Others may simply have kept silent. If you're lucky, you have an incredible support system built in, made up of people who love you regardless. Today on WellCast, we're talking about that life-changing moment of telling someone that you're gay. We'll help you prepare for that moment, whenever you decide to take it, and give you some resources to turn to, should you need them.

i'm not gay, but i feel sorry for those who are, not because of who they like, but of the ridicule they are put through from homophobes and just dicks in general, so if you are gay/lesbian and someone tells you its wrong, either walk away, or punch them, but maybe not number 2, that might get you into trouble ^_____^

I came out to my mom as pansexual (attraction to all genders- trans, cis, nonbinary, genderfluid, intersex, etc.) several months back, and I thought she was taking it pretty well. Last night I mentioned casually at dinner to my Aunt and Uncle that I wasn't straight (they didn't really care that I wasn't, they just didn't know and were pretty casual about it) I was getting ready to attempt an awkward explanation and get bombarded with the usual "You mean BISEXUAL?!?" routine my mom had pulled, but my mom cut me off really aggressively and said "oh she doesn't know WHAT she is!" and I just kind of shut down after that. I mean, lately she'd been acting kind of hostile towards the idea of there being more than two genders, but I didn't think much of it. It really took me by surprise, because she said she'd accept me no matter what... I don't know, it just feels like a huge slap in the face. I just wish she would make up her mind about whether or not she supports who I am.
And by the way, if you're going to reply to this just telling me that pansexuality isn't a thing or that I should kill myself or that there are only two genders, kindly f*ck off because there have been MULTIPLE scientific studies that prove otherwise.

It is very difficult with family. It all depends on the type of family you have. In my opinion only you know when it is right and you may need to give them time to process the information. I sat my mum down and told her. I let her ask questions and left her alone to process the information. I had also made arrangements with friends in case I was kicked out as my mum is very religious.
Just make sure that you have someone to help you if it does go bad. I'm not saying it will go bad but you should always be prepared for the worst.

goldengameA Highly religious can be seen as "Old fashioned" too as in they're not considering what the modern world is like and believing in something that's several thousand years old back when the human race didn't quite understand everything. Remember a couple hundred years ago "highly religious" people were responsible for trying to hunt supposed magical witches and look how that turned out. We don't quite know what the person posting is exactly meaning when they say highly religious, if they're lucky enough to have parents who follow the ideology of "Love thy neighbour" and respecting their family and fellow man then they've got nothing to worry about but if it's the bigoted kind of highly religious then it's understandable why they don't know what to do.

In the beginning, she was rather disappointed with me but after a few weeks, she was ok with it. Now, she doesn't care at all! I came out to my dad, he was completely fine with it. My mum though....she's really religious. My family is all muslim and in Islam, homosexuality and every sexuality that isn't heterosexuality is wrong. You will go to hell if you're something other than straight. In my country (Singapore), Gay Marriage is illegal. There are LGBTQ parades in Singapore, it's called Pink Dot and it happens annually. I'm want to go but I'm socially awkward and I have no one to go there with. My dad is always busy and far away from me (My parents are divorced) and my sister would rather go out with her friends.

... Oh... do these strategies work for revealing that oneself is a furry?

    • @TheKeeshu
      @TheKeeshu Před 10 lety +7

I would assume the same strategies would work for furries as well. These strategies are basicly just trying to tell a secret about who you are that does effect your life.
Anyone who is a true friend will understand, even if for whatever reason they disagree.
If you're young and are planning to tell your parents, you may want to wait until you've moved out and can support yourself if you think your parents will not understand.
Remember, this is just one part of your life. Don't treat it as some abnormal thing, and chances are the person you are telling it to will not think it's abnormal either.
As for explaining the furry thing to anyone. Watch "Uncle Kage"/Samuel Conway's thing on dealing with the media. It's a panel he does at several conventions. It's mostly dealing with the media, but it also talks a little bit on how to explain the furry stuff to normal people who have never heard about it. Don't worry, he tells a few jokes, so it won't be all that boring (he sometimes says vulgar things too).
There's some interesting psychology that goes into telling things stuff.
      Personal Story time
As for me, I don't go around telling people these things generally. If something comes up, it comes up.
      1. When I was young playing video games was somewhat looked down upon in my town.
      2. Later on in my life, in the time where everyone question's their sexuality, I thought I was gay for a while and told a couple people. (Though years later I found out I was either bi or didn't care for sex)
      3. Little later on I was into the Furry community for a while.
      4. Later on I got into the Brony community.
Even with all these things, just about everyone I meet likes me.
I don't hide anything and keep doing what I do, but I don't go around shoving it in people's faces.
Anyone who get angry and declares that they are no longer my friend, I pretty much ignore, because they were never really a good friend to begin with. Eventually you'll just be left with a bunch of good friends you can trust and are open-minded enough to be okay with whatever you do.
I hope at least some of this is helpful/comforting.

      @Ceasarexthemage Před 10 lety +4

I recently came out to my grandma just yesterday. She’s always been very religious, including that the idea of gay is a sin. She always had seem to hate gays and wants nothing to do with them. Someone who I had come out to unfortunately told her. I approached about it to her yesterday telling and confirming that I was gay. She took it better then I thought but there are still bumps and curves I feel like we both need to get past but it feels like it’ll never get there. She tells me she’ll never come to my wedding and that she wants to pray that I’ll be straight again. Honestly it kind of hurts, telling someone you’ll pray for them is like saying “oh there’s something wrong with you, I hope god fixes it”. She never talks about it and gets weird when I bring it up. She’s not open to going to support group meetings and I kinda feel lost here.
Any advice anyone? Is this relatable for anybody else? Just wanted to let others know they’re not alone and many gay people sometimes have to face things like this

I told a couple of Internet friends, the ones I TRULY DEEPLY trust- they didn't care either
Then my grandma.... It didn't turn out so well.... She told my grandpa and he told my parents, and I got in trouble ( I don't know how :T ) I mean like - ' ITS NOT YOUR JOB TO TELL PEOPLE ' plus they're Christians/Catholic.... I'm not saying I don't like believers, Not every believer is like that UvU - So my dad said -" Tune down the drama, you're still a kid " I just say there thinking- ' Oh no... I have to say sorry NOW ?!?! NOW THERES GOING TO BE MORE DRAMA '
I made some stupid excuse, cause I know he's just going to yell at me for trying to ' grow up '.....
I can't trust my family now :/ well sometimes- atleast my closest friends and Internet friends know, and promised not to tell.... ( and I know my internet friends didn't cause we talk all the time and yea :T can't really explain it )

Fine Arts Departments (specifically in music and theater) tend to be more liberal and open then other organizations. I was lucky in that I happened to join the choir at my school. It definitely helps to have friends that aren't going to try to change you, or push their agendas in your face, but are loving and want you to live the way you are.

+Bell Cranel I know this comment was posted three months ago, but:
      - Remember that quote that all LGBTQ+ people know.
      - If your parents are anything-phobic, just feel confident.
      - If you can't look them in the eyes, look at their nose.
      - JUST TELL THEM HOW YOU FEEL! I came out a few months ago and my parents were overwhelmingly supportive. I'm almost in a relationship... (LOL, I wish, but whatever you need, Bell, you'll be fine.)

I feel weird because everyone is acting emotional and I'd just paint the walls rainbow and scream it out. Also if I suspect my friend is gay I'll give them a rainbow shirt and bug them till they tell me. Gays are fabulous.

@@sanstheskeelaton3337 I am jealous of both of you. I’m straight and heteromantic. I am also philophobic. Meaning I fear romantic attraction. It would be easier for me to not feel romantic emotions.
In conclusion, please be proud of this aspect of your personality. There are people who are jealous.
Edit: I figured out I’m somewhere on the aroace spectrum myself. Apologies if anybody was offended by the above comment.

I've been telling close friends over social media, too afraid to confront them face to face, but it's increasing my confidence and they're suuuper supportive. Plus... I think my family already knows I'm not straight, maybe they mayn't know I'm trans, but not straight.

I have a problem, my best friend knows that I am not straight and she accepts the fact but, the issue is, is that I like her.... and the first thing she said when I told her was: But I am straight so don't think that we are going to go out or anything because I mean, my parents and I am most definitely straight!' this may not be insanely accurate because it happened last year and I didn't like her then like that. I don't know what to do, help!!!

This is propably a bit late for you but I still want to say it. I know its hard accepting that you dont have a chance with the Person you like, especially when they are straight. I've been in that situation and the only advice I can give is: give it time. It hurts and thats ok. its no ones foult that your in a Situation like this. I know its incredibly painfull but I promised it will get better.
