Hi Gena! First let me start by saying THANK YOU! For making this video! That was Meeeee that asked that question. I’m so glad I was late to the Q&A cause this was way better 😉 this helped a lot! I just recently found your channel about a month ago and I love it so much! Thank you for taking the time to make this video!
Good information to share. I lost a variegated Obovata due to underwatering and I wish someone had told me a) that that was possible and b) that I could cut it back and try to reroot. Now I know better and have saved a failing incrassata with this method.
Thank you 💚💚💚. Yup for the most part we shouldn’t ever completely lose a Hoya. Not saying it won’t happen, because it’s happened to me, but with the proper knowledge and action we can save our plants if they start failing 😊.
This was so helpful. I haven't lost a Hoya to root rot or dry rot yet so I will know what to do if it happens. I have orchids mostly phals that I have had root rot. After watching CZcamsr Miss Orchid girl for 4-5 yrs I can usually
I’m 😂lose my Hoya variegated Hindu rope variegated and I’m have a suspect that is dry rotten thank you Gina for this class tha way we now want to do 🙏🏼
Hi Gena! Thanks so much for this video! This has happened to me a few times mostly because I get a little afraid to water them. Especially as I get into purchasing more rare hoys. Sometimes I'm over cautious with them. I agree with you about propagating, its important to have back ups. I love your top, the foxes are adorable! ❤❤❤❤
Hi Nicole!!!! I’m trying not to be so afraid of watering. I feel like under watering them is a bigger risk at this point. Just from experience. I think if you have a nice chunky mix that drains really well there’s no harm in watering frequently. Thank you!!!! 🦊💕💕
Thank you!!!! I’m trying not to be that way but it’s a balance for sure. I feel like I’m getting better at watering at the right time. I think lol. Thank you again 💚💚💚.
Hi, Gena! I just recently learned about dry rot. Thanks for filling in the blanks. I see you found your walnut/squirrel bowl. The one in my collection is all dark. They are adorable. My cat died last week so I ordered some plants. A Thai Con and a ppp. What kind of pole should I use for my ppp? Hi, to Nora.
Hi Terri!!!! Oh no!!!! I’m so sorry about your cat 💔. Big hugs 💕💕💕. I love your comfort plant choices. I’m not a big fan of poles personally. Just because most of them are so bulky looking (especially moss poles). I like just using a bamboo stick. But I think any type of pole would be fine. If you’re up for maintaining a moss pole, those seem to be popular and used with aroid plants. I did get my squirrel/nut bowl!!!! I ended up just buying it on eBay. With shipping it was like $32 total. I couldn’t wait to find one at the thrifts lol. I’m so in love with it. It’s different than the one my mom had. I love that the squirrels ears are pink inside. If I find one locally I’ll still pick it up. I’ll have a little collection. They do come in different colors which is nice. Hope you have a lovely day!!!🐿️ 💕
Great timing. I got a rooted cutting of heuschkeliana from a friend and I think I didn't water it enough and it started shriveling. Dry rot. I took it out of the pot and now have it sitting in water until it rehydrates. I think it may need to go in a humidity box as well. I feel so bad about it!
Cont. Save the plant. Cut away all the black mushy roots, spray with all the good roots with 3% hydrogen peroxide and put in clean orchid mix. Sometimes it takes more than one time to get it healthy again, some so well and sometimes the plant doesn't bounce back but i try my best. CZcams videos are so helpful.
Indeed they are!!!! The nice thing is that a lot of plants are easy to save from root rot. You won’t be able to save the whole plant, but enough to be able to start again. Thanks!!!!
I too use a rooting gel/powder. Not every time but a lot of the time. I think I did dip these australis in rooting powder. Glad it works well for you too!!!💚💚💚
Wow gena is like u read my mind lol I ordered a Hoya Mathilde and it was all cuttings now I replanted it and I’m worried about it rotting. What do u recommend?
I’ve had that happen and I absolutely hate that. That’s one thing I will NEVER do when selling my plants. They must have a good root system going before I send plants out. I’m assuming there is very little roots? When that happens to me I just watch it very closely. If you have a cabinet, or someplace with high humidity, I would put it in there. Keep it warm, humid, and with great lighting. I recently received a Hoya rangsan splash that was just cuttings. And I just pulled one of the struggling cuttings out of the pot to reroot on its own. I’m not sure what else to recommend. Just keep an eye on it. Good luck!!!!💚💚💚
Where do you get zeolite? I want to make a DIY pon mix..for alocasia in particular... Does hoya do a lot better in pon, than a chunky mix? Interesting, informative video on dry rot...
I get mine on Amazon. I do have a whole video on Hoyas in pon and a DIY pon recipe with links in the description of that video. I think it depends on the Hoya. Some like a lot of water and will do great in Pon. Hoya Bella is a great example of that. I have most of my Hoyas in a chunky soil mix and they are doing great, therefore I would not even think about switching those plants into pon. Thank you!!!!💚💚💚
So glad!!! This one was tossed. It’s a homemade pon and I put vermiculite in it which wet vermiculite is the worst lol. Sticks to everything. I don’t like it so I just tossed it all. There’s no way I’d be able to remove it from the rest of the “ingredients “. I will never add vermiculite again lol.
About how many leaves max would you think is ok per cutting? I have a large plant that i rotted and I’m trying to save as much of the length as possible 😢
Oh gosh….that’s hard for me to answer. If you’re trying to save length than I would go ahead and experiment. Make it a length that you are comfortable with. Especially if you have a lot to work with. The leaves at the end of the vine will be the first to start showing signs of struggling. They’ll get limp and wrinkled in my experience. If that starts to happen I would just start cutting those off and propagating those on their own. Hope that makes sense!!!! Good luck 💚💚💚
My Pachyclada has dry rotted for the second time. This time it went from super lush leaves one week to only 2 leaves on the entire plant a week later. I will not grow this Hoya again.
Yeah if there are no roots there’s no way a long stem will survive. Even if there are a few roots the plant will struggle. Learned this by experience 💚💚💚.
The dark glossy leaves on that plant are so beautiful. 💚
For a “plain” solid leaf Hoya they definitely are. Love that really dark green glossiness 💚💚💚.
This way being good investment from plants, bravo Gena 💚😊💚
Exactly!!!! I’m making lemonade out of lemons 💚💚💚. Thank you Rev!!!!
@@ThePinkTrellis so fresh 😊 now I just have to wait for the party invitation on Friday LoL 💚😁
@@iRedPlants party invitation? You mean for my birthday???? lol how did you know???? 😂😂😂.
@@ThePinkTrellis of course i know your birthday, you are my big sister lol 🤣🤣 and now everyone to knows that party 🤣🤣🤣
@@iRedPlants lol true 😊
Hi Gena, you totally make sense. I too have cut up some of my Hoyas and started over. It’s just so much easier. Thank you and see you Sunday ❤
Hi Sylvia!!!! Yep so much easier to just start over again. See you Sunday 🥰.

Oh yay!!!! So glad it was helpful to you 🥰. Thank you so much!!!!💕💕💕💕💕
Beautiful dark green Australius plant! Absolutely gorgeous
Thank you!!!! 💚💚💚

A few of my plants have dry rotted recently... It's so sad! Thankfully they were all salvageable, and I've got them rooting in water :)
That’s the nice thing, most of the time they are totally salvageable. I’ve only lost like two plants to root rot and I’ve had quite a few get it.
Great video Gena.. I had to chop up my Obavata due to dry rot. I chopped it all up and put the cuttings into fresh soil and it's doing great!!
Thank you!!!! I’m so glad to hear it’s on the mend!!! I have a fear of my Obovata and Kerrii rotting. It will be sad days if it happens!!!!
I’m 😂lose my Hoya variegated Hindu rope variegated and I’m have a suspect that is dry rotten thank you Gina for this class tha way we now want to do 🙏🏼
Oh no!!!! That one should be really easy to save though 💚💚💚.

Your vids are so peaceful to watch. Thanks for your work👏🏽🙏🏽
Thank you sooo much 🥰.
Great video! Very clear and helpful! I'm the same way about not wanting to water too much and then dry rotting 🙃 ugh!
Thank you!!!! I’m trying not to be that way but it’s a balance for sure. I feel like I’m getting better at watering at the right time. I think lol. Thank you again 💚💚💚.
Thank you for the hoya video!!!! So glad and appreciative of your teaching. Excellent video
Thank you 💚💚💚.
Thanks Gena. I think this method also works for other plants. Great information.
Hi Chris!!!! I think so too. Thank you 💚💚💚.
Yes what you said does make sense.
💕💕💕 I’m sooo glad. I feel like I’m not always good at explaining things.

Haha thanks!!! You too!!! 🥰🦊❤️
Me too I root directly in soil but I use a rooting gel and I've had the best results.

I don’t have any luck with pon. Every time I tried it they got root rot.
hmmmm...sorry to hear that. Not everything works for everyone.
