Historical retrospectives of Le Corbusier's homes such as the "Petite Maison" and the "Villa Savoy" skirt the real problems Corb's idealistic residential designs inflicted upon their owners; Villa Savoy in particular was a technical failure, much of which could have been avoided, but for the desire for aesthetic dominance. Corb never sought to correct his Villa mistakes, regardless of the number or letters over several years the owners sent him. Mies was no better with the "Farnsworth House." Moreover, Corb's mother was not happy with the Petite Maison and would write to Corb to complain to no avail. In this video, from 1:34 - 1:42, the reason Corb's parents couldn't afford servants was that the first house he designed and had built for them nearly cost them their entire fortune; not a laughing matter as the house had to be sold in order for them not to be "house rich and cash poor." Makes me think Corb was a Narcissist.
During my architectural training, I admired Corb and the other Modernists ideas and, of course, they were a major influence in my own work. It's not lost on me that the modernists are celebrated for their theories and explorations with their clients and their client's money. The difference today is architects have far more building code restrictions to deal with, which tend to decrease sloppy technical detailing and lousy building orientation. Also, we have far more and better building products than we did eighty or more years ago. I'll put in a good word for Corb: the church at Rochamp is a unique masterpiece, as is the government complex at Chandigarh.
