Erik Voorhees, a crypto OG, has launched Venice, a private, uncensorable, open source competitor to OpenAI’s ChatGPT or Anthropic’s Claude, powered by a decentralized crypto network.
In the episode, alongside Venice’s COO Teana Baker-Taylor, they delve into the problems with censorship and data in current AI agents, such as that they create honeypots of information about users’ search history for hackers, or that they can be absurdly politically correct, such as refusing to create images of Caucasian people. As they point out, there’s also the risk that the companies managing them could being censoring the models to please the Chines government, in order to access the market in that country. They talk about their plan for Venice to gain market share, considering that Duck Duck Go, a privacy-preserving competitor to Google, has much smaller market share. And they explain why they intend for Venice to eventually use the compute of Morpheus, or other decentralized crypto-powered compute networks.
They also critique the SEC’s current regulatory approach to crypto, calling it “a joke.” Additionally, they explore the concept of AI agents using cryptocurrencies as their primary currency.
    Show highlights:
➡️ Why Erik decided to move into artificial intelligence and merge it with crypto
➡️ What problems decentralized AI would solve and why it's hard to solve sexist and racist views in LLMs
➡️ The differences between ChatGPT and other similar products and Venice AI
➡️ Why privacy is so important for users, according to Erik, and how Venice doesn't store the users' information
➡️ How central governments could manipulate information to their own benefit and how to avoid it
➡️ Whether people will shift from using search engines to LLMs
➡️ What Morpheus is and its goal to provide decentralized computation for AI
➡️ How Erik and Teana believe crypto and AI will continue to work together
➡️ Erik's and Teana's thoughts on some of the recent government actions against founders of crypto privacy services such as Samourai Wallet, Tornado Cash
➡️ Why Erik believes that the SEC has become a joke

Is there any way we can invest in or support Venice? Free Speech is very important to me and I see the industry shifting to more and more censorship. Erik is doing great work.

I'll have to try out Venice but its fairly hard to believe that an AI from a company Eric spun up a few months ago would actually be able to provide similar or better answers than Chat GPT (which has already had many millions poured into its development)

Venice uses open source LLMs which some are actually on par with GPT4. If you try out Bittensor's Corcel you can try multiple models for free including ones you usually pay for like Claude, GPT4 and you can compare with the open source models like mixtral7b or Llama3

Apple is like that. Your iPhone knows where you are, connected to your iWatch that knows your heart rate and all activities you do, connected to your apple card that knows what you buy...not to mention apple TV that knows everything you watch, apple music...welcome to being an iSlave.

What about security? What if a teenager wants to build a world killing virus? Or spread disinformation? Freedom and uncensorable aren't necessarily always a good. AI is incredibly powerful and could wreck everything.

The US is far more authoritarian than China or the DPRK, in my view (just look at # of prisoners per capita)... But anyway I appreciate this interview its very important. The project seems to good to be true in a way but very big if true and if it's allowed to be uncensored. I wonder what pushback from US agencies there will be to try and stop it. Good luck, genuinely hope it succeeds.

Laura, you are very naive. You have a lot to learn about how the government really works.
