I'm don't reckon they're too expensive - I have one and the mechanism is quite complex, which probably explains the price. It works really well and saves me masses of space. Agreed - it's quite a lot to spend, but it's a fantastic bit of kit and effectively gives me an extra room in my house!
COMPROMISES: You have to make the bed every day or the sheets will fall off when you fold. The desk has no drawers. You're limited to a small computer monitor.
the piston mechanism is about $200.... buy yourself some REAL cheap plywood and maybe if you don't mind working for free and you have the tools and workshop to do it.... you could hit that pricetag

$2000.00 for the Large Double StudyBed. I can probably make one for less than a quarter of that price.
