    There are a lot more examples to show the peculiar nature eg you CAN be offside in your own half when you touch the ball having started in the opponents half in offside position and then run back into your own half, touching the ball before anyone else. There is often confusion between a deflection off an opponent (not goalkeeper) where you can still be offside and a deliberate kick/pass or miskick from same defendant where you would not be offside. Whereas any save from a keeper, deliberate or otherwise that rebounds to you in an offside position (when the ball was kicked) cannot be offside. Sorry, the rule itself may not be confusing but applying it in practice often is.

  • @ryanrussell4181
    @ryanrussell4181 Před 10 lety

    Hoyt Jeter you are correct. A player cannot be ruled offside if the opponent plays the ball to him directly or miscontrols a ball played to him by a a defending teammate. A player is also not offside if he steals the ball from the last defender (usually the goalkeeper).

    Alright. Now i understand a bit about offside. It's not hard to understand as you've said, but it's undeniably hard to determine and judging the situation in real play. The referee should fully be aware and very focus on the game as the players are all running fast here and there it might be very confusing to call the offside offence.

    8 Jan 2023. I have a rule. If a 'teacher' - of any persuasion - starts his talk by saying the subject is "simple" or "easy" I know that the 'lesson' will be of little use because the 'teacher' doesn't have empathy with his audience.
    Today Liverpool scored a second goal against Wolves, which VAR judged to be legal. But this article is "officially approved" and the law is "easy/simple" it suggests that the scorer (Salah) was offside.
    So much for simplicity and so much for the football authorities' control of the laws.

    this offside rule is the best solution to the 1990 world cup where the matches were boring and with few goals because the defenders were well protected. to break the defenders line you need physical qualities. with the rule of 1995 there were 7.8 offfsides. with the rule of 2004 there were 4.8 offsides. with the rule of 1921 people stopped going to the stadium with only 2.58 goals. with the 1925 rule the goals increased to 3.69 goals. pele played with this rule. thanks to this rule soccer is interesting and we have the first records with messi and ronaldo.

  • @lardyl
    @lardyl Před 12 lety

    Agreed. The video commentry suggests that the law as currently formulated is "Not Controversial" What?
    How can a player not gain advantage when offside and in the field of view of the keeper or a defender? The defending player will be distracted if they are open to receive a pass! How does that defender know if they are offside/not? It's hard enough for the officials to know, never mind the defenders. Of course the attacker in the offside position gains advantage. So they should be flagged.

  • @calligraphyguildofcolumbus5849

    OK, a right forward is carrying the ball up the side, crosses the ball to his left forward, who is onside at the time of the pass, but moves beyond the 2nd to last defender, to receive the cross. The player was onsides at the time the pass was made. Instead of a successful cross, a defender intercepts it.The left attacker, is now in an offside position. The defender misclears the ball, sending it sideways, to the attacker, who was onside when the teammate passed the ball. Ref called offside.

  • @craigcharles3343
    @craigcharles3343 Před 9 lety +4

    This one rule alone (offside) is what makes soccer so confusing and subjective, especially to the fans. It's places too much burden on the officials which can cause the perception of bias. It also leads to lower scoring games. Soccer to me is a great game in dire need of one major rule reform...law #11. I know it wont' happen but it should.

    • @Helix426
      @Helix426 Před 9 lety +6

      Imagine how boring the game would be without the offside rule. Offensively, you would put one tall, stout teammate right in front the opposition's goal all the time, and the rest of you would just kick the ball toward him/her. Defensively, since you always have an opponent BEHIND your back line, you wouldn't wanna crept forward. Dickless version of American Football...

    This is a good video, but I find it humorous that it is described as "as easy as 1-2-3", and then spends the next 5 minutes detailing all the minutiae that determine 1 and 2. As I am finding out, the job of the AR in making offside calls is not an easy one.

  • @calligraphyguildofcolumbus5849

    My understanding is if it has accidentally deflected off the defender, to the left forward, yes, they would be offside. However the defender had control of the ball and intended to clear the ball, just not where he wanted it to go. Since the ball was not a pass from his own player, the left forward would not be offside. That is how I remember the rule from when I took my ref class. Can any ref instructors address this, please?

    I don't know a lot about football so sorry if my question sounds silly.
    But what if you are in an offside position the moment that a player from the opposite team kicks the ball in your direction. You then kick the ball in the goal.
    at 5:20 it says that it's offside when the ball rebounds off an opponent. But if it didn't rebound, if the opponent was actualy playing, he kicked it while you stood offside, you ran to the ball and shot it in the goal.Is it also offside or is it only offside if the the ball comes from you own team?
    I think that for the rest I finally got what offside means. Thanks for the video.

    • @Kardanwelle1994
      @Kardanwelle1994 Před 9 lety +1

      It depends on the situation: If the pass of your opponent player to you (while standing offside) was unintended, it's offside. But if the pass was played to you in a controlled manner, it is not offside. The referee has to decide if the was pass was played willfully or not.

    • @WillTheTimeCome2
      @WillTheTimeCome2 Před 9 lety

      Haki7Hikari It does not matter intended or unintended. If it's not a rebound than it's not an offside, no matter close or far from you your opponent is. There is one more interesting thing. Suppose you are in an offside position. Suppose your team-mate does not want to give you a pass (forward direction), but he decides to give the ball back to your team's defender or a goalkeeper of your team (backward direction). But the ball suddenly rebounds of one of your opponents and moves to you. How do you think, is that an offside? Actually, that is NOT, because the initial after-pass direction was opposite (before the rebound). This is a real-life example.

In the case of a free kick, should an attacking player be be deemed offside (a) only if he was in an offside position when the the free kick made contact with the ball? or (b) if he was onside when the free kick was taken, but raced a defender to the oncoming ball, leaving only the goalkeeper between the ball and the attacking player?
    If (b), as was in the case of one of Arsenal's goals in today's FA Cup semifinal, then - in the words of Charles Dickens, "If that is the law, then the law is an ass".
    We seem to have come to a situation where a TV watcher is in a better place to judge then the linesman. With current technology, couldn't - make that shouldn't - referees and linesmen also have a colleague in the stands?

    Questions. What if the defense team plays the ball back and the player was in an offside at that time. And he gets the ball. Is that off-sides. So as long as the defender has possession then plays it to the goal keeper you can not be offside even if you were in an off side positions. So you can steel the ball and shoot. Correct.

    Make the goal mouth smaller. In hockey they allow players to be in front of the goalie blocking his view of play and they allow deflections right in front of him or her. It would be unfair to allow this in soccer but not if they made the goal smaller. Also the pitch is to big. The players look tiny and therefore in my opinion of course is the reason why there doesn't appear to be a whole lot of action going on. Upopular post but atleast I am explaining my view instead of just hating on it.

      You're saying that a 100mx60m pitch is too big to fit 23 people? Are you nuts?

    Pretty sure you cannot do that in FIFA 13......Post a video on that.

      but then they could have half of a team crowding the goal and that would multiply the number of goal opportunities by a lot

    Im telling you the Offside rule is a wrong rule because it spoils the defenders and discourages the attacking team from doing their best. Who introduced it? Its a disaster for football. Remove it!
    Every player must put in his effort to attack and defend their stake in the game.
