    man last year my first year owner operator and i never drove for anyone, "did 20 years on drilling rigs". i drove 77k miles made 225k and worked 30 weeks .. 3-4 days.. i guess i didn't do that bad.. anyone that drives 150k miles, has no life

    I flatbed. And my average wait time for loading can be 1.5 - 2 hours. Sometimes longer but not much. I’d rather wait a couple hours than wait 8+ or a day like the van world. Once loaded it’s all in your hands how fast you get back on the road. I like the balance of physical work and driving. Also the satisfaction I secured that load, I can see that load, physical check that load. I don’t think I’d like the out of sight out mind feeling with van trailers.

    Most drivers now days don't want to do flatbed. Because it's hard to tarp in flip flops.

  • @kurtsaxton823
    @kurtsaxton823 Před 2 lety +16

    The wait time is generally longer when you pull box. Winter sucks for a flatbed hauler. I've pulled both over a 30yr carrier, and greatly preferred flatbed which was 25yrs of my carrier. The money is better pulling flat and if you get to o/d or heavy haul the money is way better, the work is harder but to me it was worth it. My advice is if you're young and strong flatbed is the way to go.

      Yeah I just started driving 3 months ago. I also did Tankers & Transported when I was Active Duty Army so I got some experience when it comes to securing the loads. Im only 24 so all the old heads told me to do flatbed. It’s actually fun for now, but I’m out here learning. One day at a time.

      For flatbed thats kinda normal as they usually deliver to developing areas. And construction zones and farms there work doesnt slow down as much as reefer or box. Most of the loads are usually long distance aswell if ur capped on miles its because of permits and ur trailer length not because the work isnt there.

  • @lifedrivefitness9123

    Not gonna lie lol there are days I would love to just back up to the dock, but I absolutely love the flatbed division. I like just about everything about it as well as overdimensional because I love a challenge. Yes Turpin can suck, especially in crappy weather or really windy days but there is also something to be said about a trailer with a beautiful tarpon job. Rotates can be awesome for the fact you don’t have to tarp but on windy days they can also be a nightmare, depending on the grade or type of surface you are on it can also pose many problems. My biggest complaint is feeding the strap through the seal. All in all though The bigger majority of my driving career has been flatbed and I’m not sure I could go back to doing van work. Awesome video brother it’s a very good breakdown👍👍

  • @BeastMaster629

    They roughly take home the same. Taxes on $189000 is little over $60000 plus truck payment of $35000 plus $10000 in repairs that’s Net $85000. Paid off truckers would make more.

    I did flatbed when I started out and I don’t think that it should be a mileage pay job I think it should definitely be an hourly pay job even though you’re over the road because there is so much work that goes into it besides driving you spend hours and hours every week securing and re-securing and checking your load and rolling up tarps and tarping loads and you you spend a lot of time keeping your equipment organized any load that requires chains it takes a lot of work to get the chains out and then chain it down and then when you’re done you have to put the chains up and keep them organized and the fact that you only get paid by the mile even though you get a little bit more money per mile I don’t think it’s worth it and then there’s a lot of ways you can get injured doing it you can fall off the trailer you can fall off the top of the load a lot of things but there are some people that really like it but I definitely don’t think that it pays enough not even close I think since dry van is paying about $.70-$.75 a mile I think flatbed should be about $1.25 a mile for a solo driver that might be worth it because you do a lot less miles is just the way it is it takes a lot longer to get loaded and unloaded probably 95 to 99% of your loads are live load and unload that plus the securementTime it’s typical to be at a shipper or receiver for 2 to 4 hours easily if not more

    Roll, tights I've done it before. I'll do it, but the only thing that I hate it on that part with the roll tights is that some of these customers you get to. They have you sitting and waiting too long Uber time sometimes and and I understand that no matter which division you go to, they have you sit and wait. And on top of it, you get some of these companies that gives you 5 or 6 stops and there are places that doesn't even have a 18 Wheeler's park, at which they want you to take it straight to the construction site. Some of these small companies you make a load to them. You put take off cargo, then they put more cargo back on you. To go drop it off at their job site.But they're not paying you for those There is a old saying in Spanish which I'll translate it to you in english. Favors do not pay my bills and mostly a lot of these places.They want you to do favors for them.Favors don't pay my bills
