  • Following the historic apology from Germany's President Frank-Walter Steinmeier to Tanzania for brutal crimes committed under German colonial rule, we ask what Tanzanians make of the gesture and whether a plea for forgiveness is enough. We meet families who want more: the return of the skulls of their murdered ancestors and further compensation.

01:55 As a Tanzanian, I strongly believe that an apology was warranted. But it is hypocritical of the TZ government to seek an apology for crimes committed over a century ago, but they themselves are not seeking forgiveness for injustices committed to their own people since independence!
Furthermore, compensation is a fair expectation. But in my humble opinion, it does not have to be monetary to the government nor to those directly affected. It could be academic scholarships. Or it could be medical treatment for specialized care, that is below standards in Tanzanian. For all of these, they should target the relevant communities where the crimes were perpetrated, but prioritizing the direct descendants .
The German embassy should have an oversight of the entire process, to mitigate cronyism and corruption.

Even i am not German and being Asian, i feel it not fair for Germany. They got their independence for 100Years ago and still messed up due to their corruption & stupidity. Even Singapore or many former Asian colony countries forget and move forward. So they develop nicely. Regardless how much you atone or donate, they will ask endlessly and not being fair for German 😢. I never hate and already forgive those who did terrible to my country.

I don't agree that money should be paid but which country got independence 100 years ago? Colonialism was much more recent than that for African countries. And that is still not enough time for a country to get their affairs in order. Many of these countries have not even yet had their final shape. The shape they are in was drawn by colonialists and they would unfortunately, have to fight wars to untangle themselves.
As for Singapore, it is well known that is an anomaly. It is literally called a miracle.

African countries should not ask for money. They should think more long-term and ask for a special relationship with Germany just like Israel has. That means, Germany should no longer have a special responsibility for just Israel but also for Tanzania and Namibia.

@@anshuraj4277 What if some of your ideas are just are not true?
1.) The British got rich by innovation, not by looting. They invented the whole Industrial Revolution, all machines, electricity, technology. This is what makes countries rich. Innovation and technology. If they stole something from you, please explain to me WHERE exactly should this 45 trillion dollars come from? From what exactly? India was an underdeveloped agrarian society. There was absolutely nothing of that worth that could have been stolen in the first place. If I am wrong, explain to me exactly what they have actually stolen of this valor. You must use common sense here. You can only loot if there is something that can be looted.
      2. Indias problems of poverty today are due to problems you are entirely responsible for on your own. Number one problem being overbreeding. It is toxic to have more children that you can highly EDUCATE. Every uneducated human is a drain and burden on a society and it’s development.
      3. The looted artefacts is an other topic, here I agree with you that everything should be returned. If it makes you happy, we should do it immediately.
But: I would like you to consider one thing here. Apart from the kohinoor, which is just a stone, there are many beautiful cultural object in our museums. We people in the West and in Europe go to this museums to admire this objects, to admire Indian culture. We cherish them so much, we copy their design, we get inspired by seeing them. Those object in our museums do your counties a very good service here. They are like your ambassadors and make us like, even love you and your culture. I for example am a huge fan of Indian textiles and fashion. And I just adore Indian jewelry, after I have seen some pieces in a museum. They are the most beautiful jewelry and craftsmanship I have ever seen anywhere in this world.
So it can be argued, that having parts of your cultural objects in other countries, can have a very positive effect on your global image and friendship between nations.

Good luck former colonies. Considering Germany 🇩🇪 murdered almost 6 million Poles ravaged their cities and stole their cultural heritage, they think a simple “sorry” is enough to heal those wounds. No reperations, no returning stolen goods, just condescension.
How would they act if Poland murdered 1/4 of their population? Would a simple “sorry” be sufficient?
