I lost my heart baby at 12 or 13 due to Ckd. He was also fat and ate a dry food diet until we learned to do better (it was already too late, he had the CKD already). The vet said he had less than a year to live and we needed to put him on hills kd. Instead we switched him to a rotation of high quality wet foods that were low phosphorus and high protein. He lived happily for 2 years after his diagnosis

I was doing only raw food, but now I'm adding an automatic feeder to dispense a couple small snacks (High quailty dry food) during the day. My schedule can be unpredictable, so it helps keep their schedule more consistent. And a bit surprisingly, the dry food is more expensive than the raw food I prepare.

Thank you for this video. I've recently discovered your channel and it's been helping me in my quest to transition my 5 cats toward a raw diet, which I decided I was going to start doing a couple months ago.
It took a couple years to transition them from exclusively kibble to adding canned due to a few of them being such kibble junkies that they'd refuse the wet and wait for the dry to be put down. (It's hard to get a kid to eat their broccoli when they know McDonalds is on the way.) Eventually I got even the most adamant refuser to accept canned food. I've been transitioning them off kibble + canned toward exclusively canned for a couple years, slowly decreasing the kibble and adding more wet. (It was confounded by having to change brands multiple times due to supply chain shortages over the past several years.) My new intent is going toward making my own once my budget allows for buying a heavy-duty meat grinder.
Four of the five naturally started losing weight and are healthy weights now. Also, all of their coats are velvety and shiny and I've now got my old lady (20yrs old this month) in diabetic remission. (She was diagnosed last year and of course the vet recommended a "veterinary diet" high in carbs for her). The only one that is still currently "chubby" is the one that was blocked and diagnosed with FLUTD 6mos after I got him from a rescue (that fed him exclusively kibble). The vet started him on one of the "veterinary" diets, so I was feeding him both wet and dry of the St/Ox formula. He got soooo fat! I've now transitioned him away from that food to eating the same canned food the others are eating (plus some cranberry soft chews as treats) and even he's starting to slim down. (He's also had urinalysis done multiple times and all have come back struvite-free.)
What is left of the last 16lb bag of St/Ox is being used as treats in a food puzzle until it is gone. It amounts to about a tablespoon each for 4 of them; my old lady gets a little extra wet when the boys get their kibble treat to keep her from poaching theirs. (Needless to say, it's taking months to get thru that 16lb bag feeding it a quarter cup at a time, but given that it's $100/bag I'll use it up and never buy it again.) My current plan is to start using gently cooked organ meats as treats when the kibble runs out, then replace one of their canned meals with more gently cooked homemade meals.
My point is that even if it takes a long time to transition successfully, don't give up. A little at a time is better than not at all.

You've been a great help. Our four cats are now on a mostly raw diet. When we rescued mama-cat from the street, she was pregnant. She had 5 kittens. We found good homes for 2 kittens, and we kept mama-cat and 3 kittens. When the kittens were 4 weeks old, we gave them canned kitten food. When they were 8 weeks old, we introduced pre-packaged ground raw. They adapted very well to the raw diet, but mama-cat was the challenge! She wanted Kibble, but thankfully she would eat canned food as well. Some days, she eats raw twice a day. Other days, she wants some canned food for one of her meals. We do have a couple cases of good quality canned food on hand, in case we lose power and our supply of frozen raw spoils.
The kittens are easy! They are 6 months old now, so they are being fed raw twice a day, down from four times a day. They also get treats. Treats are all freeze-dried: minnows, salmon, chicken hearts, beef liver, chicken breasts. They also get raw goat milk and raw quail eggs.
Their food is pre-packaged ground frozen raw. I give them the brand "Big Country Raw", it's Canadian 🇨🇦. They have different 'blends'. Our kitties like the 'chicken/salmon/beef' and the 'turkey/sardine/beef' blends. I add a few drops of omega 3 oil and a pinch of dried kelp. Whole prey items are very scarce around here. What we do have is EXTREMELY expensive. One little frozen quail is $18!! Having frozen food shipped to us is not reliable, either. We live in a small Canadian city, aka The Sticks. Sorry for mambling on, just wanted to let you know that you've helped us get this far! Thank you!

No need to apologize! I appreciate all comments and ramblings lol I'm so happy you started early. Mama has that kibble habit on lockdown lol but when you start with kittens early they don't develop those picky eating habits. I'm glad you found a raw brand that works for you! Ordering whole prey can be expensive. I'm still on the hunt to find a farm that will sell to me locally!

My cat is an oinker. The breeder warned us she was PARTICULARLY greedy when it comes to food. Food in a bowl is a big no no and I never leave big portions of kibbles for her to eat throughout the day. She is fed 2 times per day : main meal consisting of wet food or raw meat, and before bed a second serving of wet food OR kibbles in a ''Nina Ottosson'' food puzzle plate (the ''Rainy Days'' model). The 2nd meal is actually really fun for her and this way she does not barf because she cannot gobble food at the speed of light! I have watched many of your videos and actually bought food brands according to your published data :). Keep up the good work. We love your content. Right now she is sitting behind me on the couch, licking my hair and holding my head in place with her claws so I don't move LOL.

I got tired of the vomit...and my cat being so sickly. I was feeding both high grade kibble and wet food. However, this week I took my cats off kibble this week. He's doing much better...and is starting to play again. He is also less picky off the kibble. I put ice packs underneath their bow to keep food cool.

Excited that in a few months he can be on all wet and hopefully poultry. But i think you are right, go slow rather than go to fast and revert.

31:59 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 as a (human) allergist I completely agree with you Jess re: animal protein and food allergy. I reckon it’s an intolerance and as an extension to what we are seeing in humans, a lot of somatic conditions, such as IBD, is a result of trauma that’s been manifested within the body. It would be interesting to look at these somatic conditions and the history of stress within a particular cats environment, and see if there is a correlation.

Queation: Is there a reason you reconmend feeding 2x a day? I'm asking because I studie petnutrion in the netherlands and learned that wild cats eat about 12 mice a day so it's more naturally for them to eat more often. NOT freefeeding!!! But what do you think about 3-5 meals a day?

The vet prescribed that food for Shadow because he kept getting crystals in his kidneys. What is a good wet food for Gidget. She likes that Sheba pate wet food. I’ve been feeding her three times a day. Is that too much?

thank you for this video! I went backwards and started feeding my cat (10month) dry again, he still eats wet food but Im gonna transition him back slowly to wet and then raw when I can. I weighed him in a tote bag using those luggage scale scales, but it said he was 14lbs, he doesn't look overweight, based on the cat body mass index/body condition score, but he does have a low hanging premordial pouch? hes a gray tabby but sometimes I wonder if hes part egyptian mau. Im not sure if the scale is wrong or he really his overweight, because he doesnt look like it at all! Should i get a flat scale and put him in a box instead for more accuracy?

    • @jesscaticles

More accuracy would be better but also great to use the body condition score card along with weight. Some cats are just larger than others even though they are not overweight. The pouch is where fat collects first though so def keep an eye on that guy!

Cats require ~30 mins of activity daily, broken up into multiple play sessions. So if she's getting that at night on her own then that's great! Otherwise, you would introduce play times slowly. You can batch routines too. For example, try playing with her 5 mins before mealtimes.

Most people do as their vets tell them because that's what we are conditioned to do. It's only after we start doing more research and doing what we truly believe to be correct even if it means going against the system that we realize we've been lied to about what our animals diet should be. If I had followed my vets orders, one of my cats in particular would be on a prescription diet and med cocktail for allergies. However he thrives on a homemade diet because he's no longer exposed to the things he's allergic too.
