14:13 ia one of my favourite moments of the whole show. I was gobsmacked. The entire Stark-Lannister war was based on this scheme. Most people might root for classig heroes and protagonists but characters like Littlefinger amaze me so much more. Him, Varys, Tywin, these are the reasons why Game of Thrones is different

    • @JessBecause77
      @JessBecause77 Před 25 dny +3

He's the one I'm looking forward to finding out what happens with him in the books. I think he is far from complete with his plotting and I think he will upheaval more than one of character favorites in the process.

  • @larkrey5325
    @larkrey5325 Před 25 dny +22

    So. Non-spoiler:
Littlefinger thinks through chaos, he can climb the ladder. He had an issue with Ned's eldest brother, who gave him that scar because Littlefinger challenged Brandon for the honor of Catelyn Stark. As a young teen, he got Lysa pregnant. This is why she was married to Jon Arryn. He needed a fertile wife. And in order for Ned and Robert to get Hoster Tully's armies, Jon Arryn and Ned married his daughters.
This I think, angered a younger Littlefinger. So once Ned heard Jamie killed the former king, the Lannisters and Starks had something of a feud. Littlefinger took advanage of this and moved the Starks and Lannisters like chess pieces against eachother until the war started. So Littlefinger climbs the ladder and gets revenge on the Starks for losing Cat. This is my opinion based on what you've seen on the show.
There is not a point-of-view chapter for Littlefinger in the books. So we are left to gues his motives.

Don't forget, too, that after Ned got executed (thanks to Littlefinger) he kinda made a play for Catlyn (when bringing Ned's body to Catlyn...she pulled a knife on him and told him to back off). Backstory: Littlefinger grew up at Riverrun with Cat, Lysa and Edmure. Lysa loved Petyr, but he was into Cat. Except Cat was betrothed to the Starks (originally to Brandon, who was Ned's older brother. Petyr challenged Brandon for her hand and Brandon kicked the shite out of him. Cat had to intervene to save his life (which in hindsight is her biggest mistake).
Lysa went to Petyr in his sickbed and they did it. It's unclear if Petyr was well enough to know it was Lysa and not Cat. (As Petyr implies he has had sex with Cat when he has not per her own narration.)
Lysa became pregnant and was forced to give up the baby, something she never forgave her father for. Then when Jon Arryn's son died alongside Brandon Stark, Cat married Ned instead and Lysa was given to Jon Arryn--who was much older than her--because she had already conceived and he needed an heir. She was unhappy in this marriage.
On Petyr's say so, Lysa killed her husband which began the series. Lysa sends Cat a message saying the Lannisters did it, so Ned would be suspicious. And then, of course, it is Petyr who says he will pay the goldcloaks to support Ned but instead supports Cersei and Joffrey which leads to Ned's death.
tldr, Petyr started this whole thing because he's creepily obsessed with Cat as this thing that was denied him. Now he's set his sights on Sansa instead.

Remember back in like season 1 or 2 when Littlefinger said something along the lines of still having a mark from his fight with Brandon Stark from navel to collarbone?
That was when he dueled Brandon Stark (Ned's older brother, the one who was strangled by the Mad King) for the right to marry Catelyn. Obviously, Brandon easily won. This is why Cat was betrothed to him and then Ned after he was killed.
After this duel, Littlefinger had to have extensive medical treatment and was a bit delusional. It was during this time that he slept with Lysa, thinking it was Cat. This is part of why he held onto his love for Cat in the first place. He thought it was reciprocated until many years later when he discovered it was actually Lysa. This is also why people have made remarks about Littlefinger settling for his second choice of wife.

It goes back even further I think. Brandon Stark was originally supposed to marry Catelyn before the rebellion. He and her father in law were killed by the mad king. Brandon went before the mad king to try to confront Rhaegar about kidnapping Lyanna, his sister. It’s believed that he heard this news from Littlefinger when Littlefinger tried to dual with him over Catelyn years ago. This made the mad king kill him and his father.

Most of the Night's Watch ranks are filled rapists. When he brings her to Molestown I don't believe they knew of the massive raid on Olly's village yet. The information he's going off of to make his decision is based on the wildlings Jon could report which were numbers that are probably commonly raiding the North.

Since you are so far ahead, I think I can just go ahead and point out that "Cersei being chill" in this episode is because she wanted to convince all the judges to take her side on the trial. From the beginning, she’s been very open about her disdain towards Margaery, but now she's advocating her to become the queen: because her father is one of the judges. Cersei was very much against sending Myrcella to Dorne, and the relations between Lannisters and Martells are extremely tense, but now she's having a heart-to-heart with Oberyn. When Tywin told Cersei she would marry Loras, she was furious and outright told him she is not going to do it, and that’s what she kept saying. Yet somehow, now she’s agreeing to it just like that.

17:02 okay so: The duel that has been mentioned before, wherein Baelish challenged Brandon Stark (Ned's older brother), for Catelyn's hand in marriage, led to Baelish injured and under sedative drugs (Milk of the poppy / opium lol). While he was completely out of it, Lysa snuck in and raped him - Baelish thought, because he was so out of it, that it was Catelyn, so he let her do it, leading to Lysa also thinking that it was consensual sex, and that Baelish loved her back.
Now after this, Lysa obviously thought that Baelish loved her, leading to her undying love for him.
And yes, Baelish set it up: He did indeed lead Ned to King's Landing, and from there, helped lead him to Robert's Bastards. He did it very subtly; he never said "Look at this sus shit", but just said "Hey, these are the last people Jon Arryn saw before he died. Wanna see them too?" Which easily manipulated Ned

It's a crazy twist that the Lannisters had absolutely nothing to do with Jon Arryns death. They didn't even necessarily know that Jon was close to discovering their secret.

Ep1 - jaime: "whatever jon arryn knew or didn't know died with him." Neither jaime or cersei were smart enough to figure it out in spite of pycelle the lapdog knowing his dying words were "the seed is strong" and what book he was reading. Poor dummies were screwed without Tywin.

@@im2arrogant118 the advisors don't necessarily share all of the information they have with their masters, as they try and manipulate events from the shadows. This is also shown by an even crazier twist in the books: Neither Jaime or Cersei sent an assassin to kill Bran. That was just Joffrey being malicious after hearing Robert say "it would be better to put the boy out of his misery". So the Lannisters didn't kill Jon Arryn OR order Bran's assassination - yet this is what primes Catelyn and the Starks to assume the worst. I would be certain that Varys and others knew all of this, but either said nothing and lied about the identity of the owner of the dagger.

@@Andrew-jb2ib I completely agree with all of that. Except for Pycelle. Pycelle is Tywin's lap dog and only seems to be loyal to the Lannisters (except for tyrion of course), but he wouldn't be privy to their secret so he wouldn't have known they were suspicious of Jon Aryn. It still feels really weird to me how careless they were about it and how lucky they got in spite of that.

Yup, Baelish got Lysa to poison Jon Arryn, and then send a letter to Catelyn saying that the Lannisters did it and were a threat to King Robert, thus pitting the Lion and the Wolf against each other. What exactly did he think that would accomplish? He does say that "chaos is a dagger", so it could all be to shake things up to create opportunities for him to exploit. Did he plan Ned's downfall all along? Or did he only betray Ned when Ned was determined to make Stannis king; because with Stannis as king, someone corrupt like Baelish, at best, would loose position, and at worst he might find himself short a head.
It's interesting to think about what exactly Baelish was planning on, and what was him adapting on the fly, but regardless it has turned out great for him so far!

As you're weeks ahead i can say this but yeah
Petyr Baelish gave Lysa Tears of Lys to poison Jon Arryn knowing that the only other person Robert trusted was Ned. Then he told her to send a letter to her sister telling her it was the Lannisters. All the while he bankrupted the crown, pocketing alot of it for himself. Furthermore; the war he set in motion destroyed House Stark and essentially bankrupted the Lannisters. He became Lord of Harrenhal, the largest castle in Westeros and also plotted the regicide on King Joffrey. The Dagger plot involving Bran's asssissins eventually causing Tywin to invade the Riverlands also heightened tensions between the great houses, and again, that plot was also Petyr's. He had to weaken the great houses in order to supplant them as he can't climb the social ladder in a stable realm - he needs chaos and fracturing the Stark-Baratheon-Arryn-Tully alliances was the start of it.
Many don't know but the War of the Five Kings parody on Joffrey's wedding was Petyr's idea. He whispered it in Joffrey's ear knowing he would never miss an opportunity to humiliate his uncle. Why? Because he knew it would likely anger Tyrion and cause a scene between the two of them - making Tyrion even more guilty. This plot also got him in good graces with the Tyrells while still maintaining a great relationship with the Lannisters.
Then - he marries Lysa Arryn to take power in the Vale, later killing her to become the Lord Protector. He also ferried Sansa Stark away, the key to the North - and later persuades Cersei to make him Warden of the North no matter what happens with the Boltons and Stannis.
Petyr Baelish destroyed House Stark, Arryn, Tully and almost drove the Lannisters into poverty. He became Lord Protector of the Vale, possibly Warden of the Nortth and is Lord of Harrenhal in the Riverlands.

Lysa could be seen as the big bad who manipulated Baelish because after he was wounded in the duel with Brandon Stark she went and had sex with him but he thought she was Cat, and Lysa didn’t correct him. So he *thinks* Cat actually loved him but she married out of duty. He may never have set this plan into motion if not for that.

    Fun fact
Jon Aryn and Stannis were working together to figure out the truth, but when Jon died, Stannis quickly left Kingslanding ( probably because he thought that if the lannisters could kill Jon,they should be more than capable of killing him in the same way)
(Also stannis in the Books informed Ned about Jon's death via a letter)
Since we see him preparing His army in both the books and the show, Stannis was obviously waiting for the lannisters to reveal their hand

There’s a pretty plausible theory that Robert Arryn is not actually the son of Jon Arryn and Lysa but Lysa and Petyr. The reason they had Jon killed was because while investigating the legitimacy of Robert’s children he discovered his own child’s illegitimacy. Jon’s nephew Harold Hardyng is said to look much like Jon in his youth meaning the Arryn looks are very dominant genes. Robert looks nothing like Jon
