In this video we check out the new netflix series Sweet Tooth, produced by Robert Downey Jr, which takes place in a catastrophe-ridden future that has been devastated by a pandemic. This pandemic has led to the creation of hybrids, which are a cross between human and animal. This fantasy show owes a lot of its value to the amazing amount of effort put into the show’s production which we dive into in depth in this video. We specifically take a behind the scenes look at the Sweet Tooth antlers and ears used on actor Christian Convery who plays Gus and how the show itself largely uses practical effects to achieve its end goals. The use of puppets is a huge aspect of what the show did in terms of practical effects, with many of the hybrids in episode one actually being puppets instead of being created using digital technology or CGI. The use of TV prosthetics also enhanced the show's production value, as many of the hybrids were outfitted with makeup and prosthetics to achieve their animalistic looks. Not only is a huge part of the show's value linked to its use of practical effects, it also took on many other interesting aspects of production in order to come to the final product of the show. Casting was a huge factor that played into Sweet Tooth’s success, as Christian Convery and Nonso Anozie reveal in an interview. Location and treatment of the pandemic also played a huge role in how the show reached success.

I really love how his ears are part of his facial expression. The puppeteer really did a great job there. As for the show... I can totally recommend it for families and people who enjoy sci-fi but don't want it to be dark or too violent.

It's like, Sweet Tooth isn't sanitized and clean, but it manages to strike the almost impossible balance between real-stakes darkness and being explicit simply to hit a higher rating.
My daughter was an extra in Sweet Tooth episodes 2 and 4, she got to cattle-prod Nonso Anozie (she's wearing black and a skull). Proud dad moment. She loved the experience of being on set with the amazing cast and crew. A great show, I am biased! but it is good.

That is not an extra, that is an actress. An extra is when they have a crowd scene, and they need bodies. When your daughter was doing the action, instead of being part of the crowd, that made her an actress.

I’m from the Waikato/Auckland regions in New Zealand and it’s amazing and so overwhelming to know and see that this movie has been filmed here. I mean what better place to pick for a series that suits and fits right in to the description. Love it.
This is the first series I've watched and was emotional the whole time, all I could say was.. please don't die now! And what a perfect synchrony with the current times! Gus is definitely an exceptional actor, and I fell in love with Jepp 😎. The sad bit is, we all have to wait a whole year for S2!😱.
Very informative! When I was watching the show I kept on wondering what they did to make his ears look so lifelike and make the movements so natural. I was wondering the same thing when I saw the other hybrids. It just didn't seem like cgi would quite do the trick especially with some of the scenes they had to shoot. Knowing how they did makes me appreciate the show so much more.
This show made me realise never judge a book by its cover...very engaging from start to end coz nothing is clearly revealed & you get hooked on to it!

Just for some context on where they actually filmed some parts in Aotearoa New Zealand:
When Gus meets Bear and her crew, they're filmed in Rainbows End, Auckland, which is a fun theme park!
And also when they are going to sacrifice Big Man with the tiger, that's filmed at Tree Adventures, which is like rock-climbing but with trees instead of rocks :)
You should come visit New Zealand when you get the chance, because the landscape, the culture, and especially the FOOD is great! Kia ora :)

I'm a Canadian and so proud of the work that Christian is pulling off! Also, the cast and stories are wonderful.
I kept seeing this as a #1 show or a top 10 show on Netflix for FOREVER, but I never watched it. I always thought it looked/sounded dumb, but I never watched the trailer. Then a few days ago I accidentally just let the trailer play & I thought “wow! This actually seems like it would be right up my alley.” And it was. I binged all 3 seasons in less than a week 😬
My favorite line/moment of the whole show: “Bobby am back!”
As a new Zealander watching this show the scenes outside really reminded me of nz so it makes sense but I didn't actually know it was shot in New Zealand and that's great, except fro in the last ep where I totally heard an actor that every kiwi knew, it was aawesome.
This was filmed in my country with my kiwi actors so proud!

I binged watched this today im crying season 2 when
I read the full comic, the show shows more hope for humanity. While reading the comic, I was fully invested in the story and how things were unveiling. There was this sense of bravery, horror, and very little hope, but at last the ending was touching. The netflix adaptation feels more complete, more hopeful and has a somewhat different premise but the same feelings of what I was experimenting with the comic were there. I can't wait for the 3rd season!

I love Sweet Tooth so much with Gus being my favorite character. I also find it interesting how the child actors/hybrids can play with each other and be friends, not only on set but outside as well! I've seen many behind-the-scenes clips of them bonding and playing with each other and I find it really cute. 🩷🩷

Christian is already such a great actor! His performance is full of life. I'm gonna have to remember his name and look for his future roles. Will be exciting to see his development (of course, let the kid enjoy some normal life too, outside of his acting career).
I really appreciate the show's family friendly approach. It's exciting and sad when needed, but also makes sure to lift your spirit once in a while, making the emotional moments more effective. It's often why I don't watch most sci-fi or post-apocalyptic series - they're just too negative and sometimes pointlessly violent. I can watch violence, but it has to have a point, and shouldn't linger on it too much. Sweet Tooth is the perfect show in this genre for me, and I can watch it with my mother, who's normally into apocalyptic movies and series, but doesn't like when it goes overboard with dark themes.
