Ninja Gaiden III: The Ancient Ship of Doom is a side-scrolling platform video game developed and published by Tecmo. It was released in Japan on June 26, 1991 for the Famicom and in North America in August for the Nintendo Entertainment System. The NES version was not released in Europe.
This was beaten as part of my quest to complete every game in my Extraordinarily Hard Games series.

I beat 1 and 2, and I still occasionally come back to this one and attempt to beat it. But the limited continues in the US version is absurd, it's hard af.
Yeah, I pretty much gave up on the US version ( I'm in Canada ) because of the continues limit, but then came all three games on SNES, ( Ninja Gaiden Trilogy ) not the best version, but at least they fixed up this continue limit....
Man, I finished the original Ninja Gaiden back in the day for the NES and I'd put it up there with the top 3 or so most challenging games to finish. This one ups the ante once more!
Great work. Yea the third game took me around 16 hours to beat with isolated save state practice to really learn sections. It has limited continues, sends you farther back and I believe you take more damage too. The first game only really had one roadblock for me and that was the middle form of the final boss. Had to really learn that with isolated state practice before I could get there and beat him without the spin attack.
@@theconsolekiller7113 did you beat in a run without save states, and just used them in practice runs only?
@@JD-mz1rl Yes. I use save state practice heavily on these older games for efficient practice but never do any cheated playthroughs. I keep a KILL LIST with very strict rules for games beaten. I have about 2000 legit playthroughs and a few hundred tutorials on the channel currently. Im missing around 1000 from the pre-recording days (Before 2016).
I just beat it after over 9 hours with no save states period and i couldn’t believe it lol. Final boss with one hit left and a few lives to spare
my fav NES n ninja gaiden series, the cinematic, OST is superb for NES game
Holy buckets of expletives... Work makes me miss Ryu uploads. It's shullbit. This is awesome. Thanks, Ryu!!!
The title makes me feel better. I rented Ninja Gaiden 3 from Kroger when I was a kid, and I couldn't beat it. I was a pretty good gamer back then (for my age, which would've been 10 or younger), but I was so disappointed I couldn't get further. I hadn't played 1 or 2, so wall climbing was SUPER fun! Not many games had that mechanic back then.
The third boss is just like the Kelberos in the first two games. Only one of them taking damage will count towards the boss life meter. The other one can't be damaged.
If you haven't, check out The Messenger. Ninja Gaiden meets a metroidvania.
One of my fav games all time
Ryu has a time machine.
That level 7 moving platform thing just looks like the track for the second platform is shorter. I'd assume you just have to wait and every other or every 3 cycles matches up. It also looks like you can farm lives there. Grant it there are still 20 minutes in the video, so maybe he figures that out.
Ninja Gaiden 3, part of the extraordinarily hard games I would say. Ryu, I would love to see you play Ninja Gaiden Master Collection. ;)
I remember going through my Ninja Gaiden games as a kid but other games I never did because I would get lost and get bored trying to find where to go next. I found it fun memorizing the locations of enemies and not using abilities. I would do the same thing in RPGs not using items and abilities
Great, i was waiting for this one.
Don't let that idiot get you down, thier levels are mostly abnormal at best. Heaven forbid you'd like a day with less garbage levels. Always a fan, chin up no worries.
"Oh! It's Ryu."
Awesome playing. No practice sounds extreme. This one took me around 16 hours to complete. Definately the hardest in the trilogy. For those looking to beat it I show all the sections No Damage in this tutorial, as well as a few 1 UP farming spots:

this game also has a stage that looks like vomit . . . that's how you know it's going to get realy hard for the player
The ole g Nintendo was my startem in 1988 till now I'm still lovin it
No way the third game can be considered harder than the first. Not kidding, I beat Ninja Gaiden 3 on my second try. About all the really hard section of Ninja Gaiden 3 have a 1-up you can get that respawns after each life.
That last 45 seconds or so made this worth it. But damn lol.
Well done! Glad they don't heavily punish you by having to beat all 3 forms after you die.
This game was brutal, I remember not being able to defeat that last boss when I was kid.
I always kinda wondered if Ryu was ever accused of....that.... with his comments about Japanese stages.
I mean anyone who has watched the man for more than 2 nanoseconds knows he probably the chillest dude in the history of chill dudes. But I never knew it actually happened. I love his reaction of just laughing it off, I wish more people did that.
I recently beat this game. I'm proud to say that I can beat the whole trilogy now. :D
This one by far took the most practice out of the three.
Thanks ryu for beating this game ..
I remember i used to play this game back in the days but i never finished it
Becuz it was soo hard lol
Music in Gaiden 3 sounds muffled compared to part 1 and 2
TEH BEARD RETURNS!
i really want NG1-3 NES games in a collection for ps4/5 !
is the background to stage 4 upside down?
I actually found 3 to be easier since the enemies didn’t respawn compared to the first two.
I didn't even play this one. After the first 2 I was like "Yeah, I'm done with this crap."
Last level always gets me
Ryu Hayabusa twisted and pulled and hurt my neck in 1988.
of all the main villains hideouts between the three nes games in the cutscene castle rock fort is the least impressive
Fun fact about this game is ... the japanese Version is way easier (Same as the Castlevania Series)
Like to start a class action lawsuit against the Hayabusa clan.
The stage 4 music is as good as video game music can be. You don't make music like this anymore.
good chiptunes for sure, but there has been a ton of great music in videogames since Ninja Gaiden 3...like movie score type stuff. Ain't no one complainin' about how music in video games has evolved. I, for one, am grateful that videogames have the budget for real orchestral music.
@@bmshaven I am
This game is unforgiven, the 1st 2 I can play right through. this one is probably the most difficult game on the console, or at least top 3.
Battletoads was far harder imo. That game was beyond bs
I still think the original is ten times harder than 2 and 3, and 3 is the easiest of the trilogy, but I guess that's just me. 3 was also the only one I owned as a kid so I played it more than the others, which I suppose could explain why I think it's the easiest.
Be more specific. Why isn't 3 the hardest when limited continues compared to the others?
@@JD-mz1rl everything moves slower, the enemies respawn way less, and lastly because it was the only one I owned as a kid so naturally I'm going to be better at it. I don't really feel like having more continues makes a game "easier," just less tedious. for example ghosts and goblins for NES has infinite continues, but it's still hard as hell to beat. hopefully that answers your question :) also... I have a no-death playthrough of NG3 on my channel if you're interested in seeing it.
It's a gamer
Tickle
That was an insulting poignant end to the video some people say comments without having watchex every one of the episodes. Ive heard that mentioned before and also joking that date rape is good for free drugs i dont know why people act that way
3 was far superior and easier to me than 1 and 2. I can't seem to finish 1 and 2 without using rewind/states/cheats.
Better channel name: Ryukarchives :p
Ninja Gaiden 3 was pretty good... However, although flashier in many ways... something about it just didn't feel quite as... well-polished as the first two. Can't really put my finger on it.
Probably the different jump mechanics, the absurd time limits and the relatively janky hitboxes.
@@udechile2497 The jumping did feel a little off. The timer was fine for me except at the very end of the game. If you dont die in the final stage you basically have to take a death due to the timer not being properly reset. Maybe speedrunners can do it quick enough.
the floaty controls throw a lot of people off
Yeah, all of these observations are true. There's also how some of the sound effects were changed. The sword slash from the first two games sounding like a vocalization, damaging a boss is the same sound as Ryu getting hit in Ninja Gaiden II... I guess that and the floaty jump mechanics are the main things. Plus the short timer in the final stages. And in the story, who in the heck is this Clancy person anyway? Why did he want to claim the power of the ruins to destroy humanity? Jacquio just wanted to awaken a demon, and then in the second game became one himself! And if Clancy was using the same power from the same dimensional rift, how was Clancy's final form more mechanical? So many questions...
@@bardinblue9830 haha the storyline makes 0 sense but I've never tried to understand it. I've managed to beat this game without dying before but it's incredibly hard to finish the last stage within the time limit. On the plus side, I like the music more than the 1st two games and the graphics are spectacular for 8-bit
Part 1 is the hardest
ninja gaiden 1? I agree with you there
@@hypnos9336 what? Why
@@JD-mz1rl why is 1 the hardest? for me I guess it's because I played 3 before 1, so everything just felt faster and harder to dodge, not to mention the respawning enemies and final bosses. everything just felt more difficult.
I can’t beat any of these Ninja Gaiden games.
This game has Tom Clancy in it?
No rifas 😅
Is I see the creators face in the thumbnail I know it’s a dookie channel.
