When you do your FPV tests really curious how it stands against Dji Action 4, especially 10bit log vs Insta 360 Ace Pro Flat profile or Pure Video modes. With these smaller cameras getting better in low light I find I have more use for them especially as the days get shorter. Great video, I like the flip screen tripod idea.
The Insta360 looks fantastic - Especially in low light. I use a GoPro to capture my drumming at gigs (often low light) or motovlogging. Low light performance has not been great.
I'm looking forward to maybe trying this bad boy out.

Nice to get a sneaky look at the new office-to-be. Seriously though - I'm ready for an action cam that does better in low light, so this is great for my research! I'm currently shooting everything in flat with my GoPro 9 and then brightening it later amongst other things. I think this would reduce my editing time a lot.

Perfectly timed video Peter as I'm currently looking to upgrade my GoPro 7 and I really fancy the Insta360 Ace Pro....or the X3......or both!
I really like that quick mount which will interact my GoPro mounts - but save so much time and messing about. I don't think that you mention it but could you give me a rough idea on how long the batteries last, say, shooting 4K video? My GoPro is now really, really bad and it nearly takes me more time to mount it than the time I get from my footage!!

I've watched a lot of videos comparing the two like you have done, and I have to say, the Ace Pro looks to perform better. The low-light test is especially telling. My Hero 8 sucks in low light, so I've been looking to upgrade. Thanks for the video.
I hope this pushes GoPro to make big upgrades next time. I'd love to see that. I do notic that GoPro did look sharper in low light though, it's easy to push the ISO and then denoise, I think GoPro is capable of that as well to get the right exposure, but it'll always decrease sharpness, but of course those pitch black footage is not usable while the Insta360 footage is.

As someone who does color correct, I think it's useful to see the "raw" footage and also the color-graded footage. Sweet video though!
8bit vs 10bit looks good on a phone screen but for editing gopro its best
Love my insta 360 x3 and owned the x2 but live the bigger screen on X3, it’s rock solid since owning it and battery last a descent amount, I use for water sports and the fact you can frame what you need to is perfect for me. I tough it was another 360 camera given its name until i watched it, looks great with that flip out screen and better low light performance than the go pro 😎😎😎😎

Thanks for the comparison, great overview. As of now, Hero 12 is priced at $349 USD for quite some time now. Imo, had better video quality, but not user friendly with glitching and overheating issues. Action 4 has been $399 USD, with no sales yet I believe. I think the video quality is a noticeable half step lower, but seems like a user friendlier camera. This Ace Pro is $449 USD. The video seems to be right there with GoPro. If there is no glitching or overheating issues, then dang, the Ace Pro looks like a great option, especially for casual users like myself. $100 more than GoPro is a bit steep. If the Ace Pro offers any kind of promo discount, I think becomes my favorite option. Thanks for great details and info so we can make an well guided decision!
This release for me marks the end of GoPro's domination in the action camera space. GoPro has been releasing incremental upgrades, now I don't know if it's because of limitations in RnD or just pure hubris, but without any substantial upgrades in the next release cycles, GoPro will be firmly left behind by other companies.
EDIT: That indoor car shot was an insane stress test, but just having the assurance that you have a good footage means less stress and more creative opportunities.
I agree. GoPro is the only action camera I've ever owned, but this is game over for GP now in every category that I can think of.

So which camera rendered the color of your vehicle more closely??? The color and white balance profiles are very different between the two. I will say the blue skies of the Insta are more pleasing, but if the camera also turns a grey car into a blue car (impossible to tell on CZcams) then I’m not sure what to make of the Insta. Would you clear that up for us please?
Awesome video Peter! My only regret about Ace Pro is the lack of 10 bit video. From my experience with action cams, 10bit really helps for the image quality of these cameras. One thing is sure, this camera is far better than a GoPro. I'm not really sure, why insta360 decided to dump the idea of modular action cam, but it is what it is. Yet I prefer the action cams of DJI, but this is still a personal choice.
Great review as always! It’s definitely safe to say that Insta360 (and DJI) have caught and surpassed GoPro in the action camera realm. Can’t wait to see that FPV footage.

Can you upload raw o unedited footage to the cloud to compare? CZcams compression and data does not help. But I can see a clear difference in stabilization where gopro is a lot better. But some features can be fixed. Great video but quality is compromised on this platform.
Thx for the comparation. I shot mainly on a big camera (Nikon z6ii) but for action I use my old gopro9. I don't want to change for gopro 12 because there is nothing new for me in it, it is still really mediocre camera. In good light, maybe it has a descent footage, not great though. The stabilization sucks even in shadows, in lowlight it makes all even worth. The screen is not responsive. I noticed in your video that Insta also have issues with stabilization in low light conditions, but nevertheless performs much better. But the overall video quality not even in the low light (where it kills gopro by dynamic range and noise reduction algorithm) but in harsh light shows a way better dynamic range too!
I guess I just really know my way around a GoPro cuz I bought an instant 360 Ace Pro and in the pure video mode even after messing with the settings it's coming out grainy and then the auto white balance started jumping from real high to real low on its own when I manual settings for iso. I know how to get really good low light video out of GoPro hero 11 but I do have to stabilize the video in post. Maybe a few more days with the Ace Pro will help. I got it specifically for night rides on my motorcycle.

I've tried to film rc planes with a GoPro (worst possible application for an action camera) and it wasn't even close to the quality I was hoping I would get.

but I honestly think that the challenge is not Ace Pro vs Hero 10+2
but real challenge is DJI 4 vs Ace Pro.....
Obviously the Ace Pro has advantages due to smarter software,
but for example we have no data on the fundamental point that tortures each of us, that is, overheating.
It's probably too early to say anything about this problem when talking about the Ace Pro.
But what do you think about this problem when we talk about DJI 4?
This problem will probably be less relevant in Sweden but we poor inhabitants of the Mediterranean have to deal with much hotter days, particularly in summer.

Any chance you could check the LRV files and let us know the resolution and frame rate? Most importantly, does the LRV frame rate match the frame rate of the main video file? On previous insta360 cameras the LRV files have a lower frame rate (14.98fps) which makes them useless for using as proxy files for editing. Gopro & DJI cameras use a matching frame rate for their LRV files, so they can be used as proxies for editing. To check the frame rate & resolution you just need to rename the LRV file from .lrv to .mp4 and then it will work like a normal video file. Thanks in advance!

The responsiveness of the screen on the Hero12 might be quite some frustrating thing yes. But it already was so on the Hero11. So I don't know what the heck GoPro was thinking there by not improving it. It's just all about grabbing our money, but this is the case with all those bigger manufactureres. Also with Insta and DJI...
Great comparison 👏 👍 in some shoots gopro was same or better but mostly ace pro was really good but one down side is that ace pro doesn't have changeable lens That's really bad 👎... because of that low light which looks really good I want to sell my GP12 with all accessories and buy this ace pro 😄🤟
seems cool - achilles heel(s) - no replaceable battery for long adventures, hikes, rides, etc - no mic input or mic adapter accessories on the insta website (yet?)

That 360 image quality is what Gopro should have had with gopro 12. TBH Im blown away by the low light perfomance of the Ace pro.

A DLSR image n video would be supper amazing for reference in this camera tests/reviews,coz 'which looks good,' is way too subjective to everyperson n doesnt help when one needs to make a purchase decision,that said love ur content

The dynamic range on insta360 it more great but the image look so sharp and over white. Low light insta360 win too! but color, image detail and strong action camera gopro win! I dont so the jump to work whit insta360 because gopro have the standard what we see action cameras. Maybe to work in low light its a great tool, definitely i wanna try it. look more to situacional camera the insta360

It's so different that one would almost think that the sponsor of the video asked you to purposely make the GoPro look bad. I'd be interested in a follow up on how each one grades in the editing software. Also, I just realized that there's a pro and essential version which begs the question about sensor size, so maybe not apples to apples?

Do you make sure the lens are completely clean before shooting because when my GoPro has finger smudges on it the quality sucks.

I bought the ace pro today since the gopro12 launch really disappointed me. I have an 11, 10, and 9, so the 12 was underwhelming. The biggest thing for me is the eco system of insta360; I have an X3 and Go3 so using the a.i program to stitch together my recordings from those cams is so nice since im not much of a fan of video editing.
Very similar look apart from the dark shots. I thought the stabe was a bit better on the Gopro tbh. So I would go for Gopro if it's now somewhat reliable. Have the Gopro 9 and that's crap when it comes to reliability...
My 9 has been just fine. Agree on the stabilization being better on the GP. Loam Ranger did a comparison, the Insta has too much "stabilization blur" when mountain biking in rough terrain. I'd say it looks about how the Hero 7 looked. At this point GoPro's stabilization has just gotten insanely good.
All the reviewers talk about HDR. No one talks about log so im sure it just doesn’t have it. Love the tilt screen do
From all the early reviews I watched today, it seems like you guys received a different version compared to the one Insta360 is promoting commercially. On their website, they show the 8k capabilities, and none of you mentioned it, which is quite surprising!
8k is kinda pointless on CZcams except for cropping in my opinion 😅
I can't disagree with you, but in my opinion, the image quality will be higher than 4k. It's just a bit strange that all the CZcamsrs received a non-8k camera, which makes me wonder if this camera is truly capable of recording in 8k or if it's just upscaling the 4k with integrated AI.
One youtuber talked about it. They got told not to mention 8k because they weren't sure they would enable it to the public, but a couple of days ago they decided to enable 8k after all :)
Curious question: Is the lens on the Ace Pro replaceable? Or is it like GoPro Hero 8 with the permanent lens set-up?

I’m running alot and live in Sweden so with the GoPro will not have the best picture 80% of the time here 😅 would you say it work good as an talking head camera aswell indoors if i will use it for all my filming? I will buy the mic adapter so i can use the wireless mic sitting and talk.

Oh my gosh the sharpening at 2:38 💀I wish there was a comparison of both with sharpening off, it’s not like anyone leaving sharpening on at default gives two quacks about image quality anyway.
I haven't seen anyone mention battery type or battery life yet.
Top video. This camera is way ahead of the Hero 12 in terms of low light, flip screen, user interface and features. I don't understand why Gopro is sleeping so deeply and why the Hero 12 only got a few minimal improvements? Why no 1 inch sensor for low light on the Hero 12? And the flip screen on Insta360. Why doesn't Gopro come up with such an idea? I will definitely switch from Gopro to Insta360 and sell my Gopro equipment. They have been left behind and can no longer seem to catch up.
Why should GoPro do like Insta360? Or like DJI? Why should either of them do like GoPro? Although the OA4 is, in my opinion, an action camera and better than the GoPro in low light, the Ace Pro is not an action camera. GoPro makes action cameras, not vlogging cameras. What do you need a flip screen for when you're speeding down a snowy slope or kayaking in the rapids? Same with gesture controls and pausing video recording. Or the magnetic mounts? I don't get those. Adding an extra piece of metal to a camera to get the mounting feet things that are already built in on the gopro? Why add weight and bulk to a camera that should be as light and slim as possible? So you can quickly mount your camera in a different position? Good luck doing that while surfing or wingsuit flying. And you can't even replace the lens cover if you crack the thing!
These are all great features in vlogging cameras, not something you're gonna stick to a motorbike or surf board. Only major advantage I see in the Ace Pro is the low light and even that is a relatively niche thing in action sports filming.
As for colours, dynamic range, HDR, etc. It mostly boils down to personal preference. Do you prefer a warmer look, a bluer or greener tone? No one is better than the other. To be honest, unless you start tinkering with the settings, all of them look like 💩. The moment you start tinkering with those, you can make your footage look exactly what you want it to look like, on either camera.
I get that Insta360 are running a great and obviously successful marketing campaign, selling a vlogging camera as an action camera and everybody is falling for it but it's our job to apply critical thinking in deciding what is best for our needs.

I have the hero 12 and the Ace Pro. The hero 12 has way better video quality when I do a comparison in the way I use the cameras. The Ace pro's de-warp is not fully capable of straightening lines and the sharpness or clarity just isn't there for me. I've tried every possible setting and the GoPro Hero 12 outperform in video quality.
Maybe.... But as a GoPro owner for 3 generations they lost me for the instability. There were instances I had to resurface during a dive cause my GoPro needed their battery pulled. Unacceptable@@ACHVPEAK

Should've kept the resolutions the same at 4k. I don't think I ever use the 5.3k on my gopro. That Ace Pro would be perfect if the lens cover was user replaceable. I love it now gopro has to really step it up on the 13 😊. Sad really as insta comes in on their first action camera and blows gopro out, after gopro pretty much admitted defeat with 360 cameras.
I thought the lens cover was user replaceable. A different video I watched said that there are ND filters for it.
@TheFlyFishingFilmmaker I've heard the production models don't have replace lens, but the ones reviewers are getting do. Maybe those ND filters snap over the top of the lens cover?

GoPro is losing battles to almost every other action camera that gets out there.
Ace looked way cleaner in almost every shot, except for the distortion, but you can fix that in the post.
P.S. That text, especially in low light shots should be layer under the video footage so it doesn't spill over it. Otherwise, great video and a nice glowing touch to the text!
dji avata can handle ace pro?
My GoPro 9 has its 3 batteries bloated after 1 year. This did not happen to my Osmo Action 1 and my Insta360 X One 2 batteries.
I was just to buy Action 4... and then Ace Pro appeared... with all those features and better LowLight now I would rather buy Insta360 instead...

The Ace Pro looks great but gotta admit that I like the look of the GoPro 12 better because the blues are desaturated lol. Other than that I think the Ace Pro looks like a great action cam, especially in low light compared to the 12. What's that bounce at 2:31 with the insta360? Great review!!
It’s actually a waaaay warmer tone on the GoPro that is hard to get rid of. Still a great camera!

What would you say is closer to real life colors?
Imagine, using the screen as a camera stand, then somebody accidemtally sits on the camera, then the back screen snaps off. Not very robust for an action cam. But still a very nice camera if you're careful with it.
Recording pause⏸️ option is good
gestures is old, I can do that with my samsung phone, dont get me wrong, I am really glad it has it.
pausing a recording is like stopping it except you have to go through a split the clips manually after hmm
Padding is for those who might not want to split clips afterwards, or want to keep a series of takes as one file (less clutter in the media bin having one file for each talking head-section for example or similar use cases). If one doesn’t want that then one can just press start and stop and have separate files :)
Scratch or break the lens and you have a very expensive paperweight.. the production models are not replaceable, crazy decision for an action camera.
It doesn’t appear if they’re factoring in the max2.0 lens
