I am planning a trip to 2024 Snow Festival. Planning on wearing mittens with glove liners. Mittens are warmer than gloves and you can layer with liners. You can also wear sock liners to warm up your feet. Sock liners go under your regular thermal wool socks and are thinner so your boots don’t get too tight. Still want blood flow in your feet. Don’t lace your boots too tight. People often don’t think of layering their feet and hands. If you are really concerned about your feet getting cold, they make those heat packs to put in your shoes too.
Good idea - wearing several layers, my body was warm enough but my feet and hands got cold. I would have worn thicker ski gloves if I didn't have to work the camera buttons! Have an amazing time at the snow festival - it's like nowhere else!
I have always planned to go to Japan in the winter, though I was worried when you said it was very cold. Its -50 in Canada right now where I live, so now I have no worries about the cold.
I think you'll be fine!! Tokyo felt quite mild compared to here in the UK, it's only in north Tohoku and Hokkaido that it's freezing! I'd love to go to Canada one day!!
Last time I went to Japan it was snowing and I just had a hoodie with me the whole trip. I'm going back this winter prepared with a bunch of thermal gear. I learned my lesson. 😅
Just discovered you from your Kickstarter. We went to the Sapporo Snow Festival a few years ago and the temperature reached just above zero C and the sculptures were dripping so it's not always as cold as you had it. We did however go further north to see eagles and other wildlife and that was colder. We did use the shoe grips and were glad of them. In places the surface was packed ice and slippy because of the slight thaw.
Welcome to my channel! :-) I heard this year wasn't as cold either, and a lot of places didn't get as much snow as usual. I'd love to go back and see more of the countryside in Hokkaido, it looks like there are some beautiful places.

Welcome to Canada! Those temperatures and that amount of snow is just like Canada where I'm from. Judging by the look of your coat, you are completely underdressed for that type of cold even if you had many layers underneath. You would have needed a down-filled waterproof windproof jacket, waterproof mittens, long trousers, snow boots and many layers. Other ways Canadians deal with such cold weather is by not going outside!!! haha. Their cars are often in their garages, they drive everywhere and even have remote control starters for their cars so that they can somewhat warm up their cars when they're out and about. You are a very brave woman for even considering walking about in that kind of weather :D
@@cakeswithfaces CP123 is pretty accurate. A good quality winter jacket could keep you warm even with just a wool/cashmere sweater underneath; that's how we survive here in canada 😂 The coat you're wearing is something we'd wear early of fall which explains why you're freezing.
You'll need it! It's extremely cold - but definitely worth it for the amazing experience. It's really something very different that you'll never forget! :-)
A couple ideas for keeping warm. Use mittens instead of gloves or over mittens over your gloves. You can put heat packs in the mittens. The biggest thing you can do is to wear a good hat. You lose 25% of your heat through your head. Those cute woven hats are generally made of acrylic and they’re not very warm or wind proof. I use a hat from Nepal. It’s a heavy wool with a fleece liner. It’s so warm it makes me sweat above about 10 degrees Celsius. It’s also wind proof and not itchy due to the fleece liner.

Congratulations - and great plan for your honeymoon! I've just booked a trip for the spring. Currently I'm thinking to see how it goes - there are still 2 months till your trip, so we don't know what the situation will be by then. Personally I'd wait and see what happens. Fingers crossed for you - I hope they manage get it under control by then. In NZ, 7° is actually fairly normal for a Winter morning. When I was younger, I would walk to the bus in a skirt/shorts and thin tights/knee socks for school (the walk was about 10 mins), and it would average about -3 to -1°. -11° is freezing though, but I can still wear just two layers.
Yes, in the UK it goes down to around 0°C in the winter or sometimes dips just below, but we never get as cold as Hokkaido! At one point it was almost -20°C, the coldest place I've ever been!

Wow that's so hot in summer, that must be hard to cope with!! The warmest in the UK's about 34 degrees C, it doesn't often get quite that warm though, usually we'll only get a few days over 30 degrees.
odd question but what’s the temp like in the cafes/shops during winter? I know in Korea indoors can get really uncomfortable because they blast the heating on :’) winter in Japan looks so pretty though 😍
It was warm inside, I don't remember sweating too much though (maybe it was just so cold that I appreciated it!). Definitely a good idea to wear layers though, so you can adjust as you need to!
Well IF you do visit Canada make sure it's during the summer months as in winter....Calgary, Alberta can see -30C or more (which is a 'dry' cold) and in Winnipeg, Manitoba it can go down to -35C or more (which feels colder because there is more humidity) and compared to living in the UK - that would feel, for you, like living in a freezer all the time you are outside.

Polar Fleece clothing is your friend! For gloves, I'd get something that isn't a loose knit as it will let the wind in and more importantly the heat out. What you were wearing would be good as an inner glove with a more solid (Less porous) outer. If you don't want to be weighed down, try getting "Wind Pants", they cut the wind and allow you to wear regular pants underneath, this creates a thermal layer that will keep you warm. Last week it was -51 (With the wind chill, in the -30's without) and I was sweating wearing a balaclava, Polar Fleece jacket, vest, short sleeve work shirt and t-shirt, lite leather gloves and work pants underneath wind pants, lastly regular boots and socks. Also, don't wear boots/shoes with a hard rubber sole, it will become less elastic and be more prone to slipping, softer rubber is better. Hope that helps

Me neither!! It was definitely an experience to be somewhere so cold - the coldest place I've ever been! Just wrap up in as many layers as you can, and take breaks inside when it gets too much.
I just had a trip to Iceland, where I spend hours on the deck of a ship looking at the aurora. Accounting for windchill it must've been colder than -18, considering that was the temperature when the sun was still shining... I'm kind of expecting the same thing for hokkaido, though I hope the windchill won't be as bad. The only 'evidence' I have to back this up is that the wind speed in hokkaido is lower (5 or 10 kmph less, depending on the website). I live in one of the most temperate climates of the world (gulf stream), so let's just say I'm not fond of standing in front of a waterfall at -22 degrees...
Good preparation for Hokkaido! I'd never been anywhere that cold - it was definitely coldest at the coast (as always) - you'll see in my Hakodate fish market video that we meant to go and take a look at the sea, but on that windy morning it was too much!! Seems pathetic looking back now, but when we were there it was extreme! However I'm glad I went to Hokkaido - it was definitely an unforgettable experience and amazing to see so much snow and icicles. The aurora Iceland trip sounds amazing. I'd love to see them one day!
the UK only reaches -2C ?? where do you live? the Eden project? , even Wikipedia says -20c - 35c averages. even this winter i've got in my car for work at -4c a few times at 8am. The wind can make it feel so much colder though. cool video (love your hair). I was in Tokyo & Hiroshima in October & it was great (about 20c Tokyo & 25c Hiroshima). love the place. so interesting.
I don't think it's every been -20°C where I live...! Obviously it's colder in the countryside, mountains and Scotland than in the city. October's great in Japan, so warm and all the Halloween stuff! 😍 Glad you enjoyed it!
If you want something similar to say Southern California climate(yr round mild climate) where you can drive an hour or two to enjoy the snow but don't really want to live in cold snow weather day to day, what would be the best city to live in Japan?
Might be tricky as most places in Japan have more of a winter than California. However it's only usually snowy in northern Japan (Tohoku and Hokkaido). Tokyo and west Japan will be cold in winter but they don't get much snow - a few days here are there but not constantly snowy. Okinawa doesn't get so cold but that's quite a way from anywhere else! To me the winter seems quite short in Japan (compared to the UK) and milder than here as well. Places you can drive to for snow (or take a bullet train) would be Tohoku in northern Japan (Sendai upwards gets snow in winter) and the Japanese alps in Nagano, etc can be snowy and colder than elsewhere too. I'm not sure where you're from so it may not be a big deal to you but I feel like I gotta warn somebody that Japanese summers are hot and super humid and Jun-Oct is typhoon season. Breezes don't help because they're carrying moisture from the Pacific. I'm the exact opposite which is exactly why we're going in the Winter. Not gonna get anywhere near their summer weather lol
Wow, you'd die if you went to Canada, -35 "C to -45"C. The biggest surprise to me after moving here was to find out that it wasn't that cold comparatively but it often freezes in houses in older houses in winter. Insulation is a new concept in Japan.
Possibly the weirdest experience of my life was being in an outside onsen pool in northern Hokkaido in February. I was very warm but ice was forming on my mustache.
Are you also factoring in the wind chill, because that -11 can easily turn to -20 or below. Canadian winters prepared me to always check the weather before leaving the house, but other than that I would say that the weather there looked tolerable.
The wind chill was extremely cold, especially near the coast in Hakodate in Hokkaido and up the mountain there, admiring the famous night view there! It's the coldest place I've ever been. To me, coming from the UK, Tokyo feels reasonably mild in winter, but Hokkaido is freezing - I'm sure you'd be able to cope better coming from Canada though!
The four seasons of Japan, change in the nature at the season, Which season do I like? I would say, each season is fabulous. 😅 The beauty of the nature that each season weaves is wonderful in winter, autumn, summer, spring. The good eating that can be done at each season is the enjoyment. The good harvest of rice is pleased to do enjoying the moon to look at cherry blossoms in spring, and to see the festival and Yukata, fireworks, pool, sea, in summer in autumn, and it warms ourselves in Kotatsu in the family, and it eats the pan in winter. This is a Japanese style.
May I know where did you buy your snow boots? I am planning to go to the snow festival next Feb. It looks amazing!! Was there any babies there? I am planning to come with my wife and baby of 9 months old!!
My snow boots are from Rocket Dog - not sure if they still have them but you might be able to find them online somewhere! I spotted a few babies and small children in Hokkaido, being pulled along on sleds as it was too snowy for pushchairs! It's extremely cold though so you'll need to wrap them up very warm!
Hi, Amy. Except Hokkaido, it tends to be warm in winter in Japan. Most ski resorts are crying over the lack of snow in this winter. And a bear has not hibernated yet.

At Narita Airport they offer free tours to a few nearby places - it's called the Transit & Stay programme: www.narita-transit-program.jp/ There's Naritasan temple and an old shopping street leading up to it that'd make a nice place to visit.

I haven't stayed in Narita myself, I've always gone straight into the city (and also don't have kids!) so I might not be much help to you on that. This is from the snow festival last year, at the start of February 2020. I heard there's less snow this year too, because winter's been a lot milder than usual this year.
Compared to the UK, I find winter in Tokyo quite mild in comparison - but it depends what you're used to, and you still need to wrap up warm. Heattech's sold in shops and kiosks in Tokyo in winter, so I can only assume it's common to wear it there in winter. But if you travel north in Japan or to the mountains, you definitely need it then! :-) Hokkaido in winter's the coldest place I've ever been!

@@woodykusaki9970 Yes bring layers! I'd usually wear a coat, glove, scarf and hat in the winter. It can be warm indoors with the heating cranked up, so you can remove layers if you get hot in restaurants, etc.
All my Hokkaido videos were filmed in February - as you can see it's very snowy! However it depends on the area; it's only snowy in Hokkaido, north Japan and mountainous regions. In Tokyo it might only snow once or twice, or not at all. In Sapporo, the snow melts in mid to late March, and elsewhere depends by area. Japan's a long country so the climate varies depending on where you are.
@@rudymasato2968 That sounds like a great plan! Kyoto and Tokyo are unlikely to have snow, but there's a good chance in Kanezawa and especially Takayama - and it'll definitely be snowy if you go into the mountains!
@@charryt5714 I don't know the average height, but I'm sure you wouldn't have too many problems! Sometimes you might just find you don't have that much legroom (similar to when you're on a plane) but it wouldn't be too bad I'm sure.
Ever considered a USB heated body warmer?....Just plug into a power bank and it will give you heat for pretty much the whole day...Anything from 8 -12 hr with a 10000mAH power pack!...So I have read...might be worth considering if you get back to Hokkaido in winter..or anywhere really..Thinking of getting one myself...I am in Scotland and it gets pretty cold here at times.....With wind chill it could get down as close to -6 and beyond...Also USB heated gloves might be another addition. Maybe even socks!!..Bikers use them.😊
@@cakeswithfaces The jackets are pretty cheap on eBay..about £25...So not expensive to take a chance. After all I'm sure some of the standard thermals are not that cheap..so..Just had a look..you can also get usb heated gloves and mittens..Plus heated socks!...Some have rechargeble build in batteries..And also you can get heated insoles..if you don't fancy socks..Socks with built in are the most expensive..about £25-30 .Anyway..I'm sure you can check them out yourself...Could be just what you need when the temp gets real parky!...Arigatou!
My Fear was the Japan weather.......... When I was in the Aleutian islands. The spring can really change the weather in that part of the World.....in like not time at all.....Sort of like a Tsunami or Tidal Wave just not in the Ocean.but over everything.
The Winter weather comes down from Siberia. The snow drops in the mountains so by the time it reaches Tokyo it's nothing but cold, nasty wind (oh joy!),... hmmm, I wonder if people are still using the highly-dangerous-poisonous-gas-spewing kerosene heaters these days,... I haven't seen the kerosene truck in the neighborhood in years (^_^),... skiing, ramen, in-season crab and buri, I guess these are the only good things about Winter! Tips from a Japanese about how you make Kairo warm as quickest as possible in the cold air. 1. If you can, open the bag INSIDE the store you bought. 2. Put it in your pocket right after you open it then squeeze it a bit so that the temperature goes up quickly. The mistakes you made in the video are; you are holding it in the cold air, you didn't wrap it up. Next time you get the warm temperature from it quicker!

Sounds like I got the right gear packed for the snow festival next week. Lots of HEATTECH! I'll be in Tokyo too, but 35-45F isn't really cold.

In NZ, 7° is actually fairly normal for a Winter morning. When I was younger, I would walk to the bus in a skirt/shorts and thin tights/knee socks for school (the walk was about 10 mins), and it would average about -3 to -1°.
-11° is freezing though, but I can still wear just two layers.
Yes, in the UK it goes down to around 0°C in the winter or sometimes dips just below, but we never get as cold as Hokkaido! At one point it was almost -20°C, the coldest place I've ever been!

Wow that's so hot in summer, that must be hard to cope with!! The warmest in the UK's about 34 degrees C, it doesn't often get quite that warm though, usually we'll only get a few days over 30 degrees.
odd question but what’s the temp like in the cafes/shops during winter? I know in Korea indoors can get really uncomfortable because they blast the heating on :’) winter in Japan looks so pretty though 😍
It was warm inside, I don't remember sweating too much though (maybe it was just so cold that I appreciated it!). Definitely a good idea to wear layers though, so you can adjust as you need to!

Well IF you do visit Canada make sure it's during the summer months as in winter....Calgary, Alberta can see -30C or more (which is a 'dry' cold) and in Winnipeg, Manitoba it can go down to -35C or more (which feels colder because there is more humidity) and compared to living in the UK - that would feel, for you, like living in a freezer all the time you are outside.

Polar Fleece clothing is your friend! For gloves, I'd get something that isn't a loose knit as it will let the wind in and more importantly the heat out. What you were wearing would be good as an inner glove with a more solid (Less porous) outer. If you don't want to be weighed down, try getting "Wind Pants", they cut the wind and allow you to wear regular pants underneath, this creates a thermal layer that will keep you warm. Last week it was -51 (With the wind chill, in the -30's without) and I was sweating wearing a balaclava, Polar Fleece jacket, vest, short sleeve work shirt and t-shirt, lite leather gloves and work pants underneath wind pants, lastly regular boots and socks. Also, don't wear boots/shoes with a hard rubber sole, it will become less elastic and be more prone to slipping, softer rubber is better. Hope that helps
Wow that sounds freezing! Thanks for the recommendations! Knitted gloves aren't really warm enough; ski type gloves would be warmer, but for me it'd be too difficult to use the camera with bulky gloves on! :-)

Me neither!! It was definitely an experience to be somewhere so cold - the coldest place I've ever been! Just wrap up in as many layers as you can, and take breaks inside when it gets too much.

I just had a trip to Iceland, where I spend hours on the deck of a ship looking at the aurora. Accounting for windchill it must've been colder than -18, considering that was the temperature when the sun was still shining... I'm kind of expecting the same thing for hokkaido, though I hope the windchill won't be as bad. The only 'evidence' I have to back this up is that the wind speed in hokkaido is lower (5 or 10 kmph less, depending on the website). I live in one of the most temperate climates of the world (gulf stream), so let's just say I'm not fond of standing in front of a waterfall at -22 degrees...
Good preparation for Hokkaido! I'd never been anywhere that cold - it was definitely coldest at the coast (as always) - you'll see in my Hakodate fish market video that we meant to go and take a look at the sea, but on that windy morning it was too much!! Seems pathetic looking back now, but when we were there it was extreme! However I'm glad I went to Hokkaido - it was definitely an unforgettable experience and amazing to see so much snow and icicles. The aurora Iceland trip sounds amazing. I'd love to see them one day!
the UK only reaches -2C ?? where do you live? the Eden project? , even Wikipedia says -20c - 35c averages. even this winter i've got in my car for work at -4c a few times at 8am. The wind can make it feel so much colder though. cool video (love your hair). I was in Tokyo & Hiroshima in October & it was great (about 20c Tokyo & 25c Hiroshima). love the place. so interesting.
I don't think it's every been -20°C where I live...! Obviously it's colder in the countryside, mountains and Scotland than in the city. October's great in Japan, so warm and all the Halloween stuff! 😍 Glad you enjoyed it!
If you want something similar to say Southern California climate(yr round mild climate) where you can drive an hour or two to enjoy the snow but don't really want to live in cold snow weather day to day, what would be the best city to live in Japan?
Might be tricky as most places in Japan have more of a winter than California. However it's only usually snowy in northern Japan (Tohoku and Hokkaido). Tokyo and west Japan will be cold in winter but they don't get much snow - a few days here are there but not constantly snowy. Okinawa doesn't get so cold but that's quite a way from anywhere else! To me the winter seems quite short in Japan (compared to the UK) and milder than here as well. Places you can drive to for snow (or take a bullet train) would be Tohoku in northern Japan (Sendai upwards gets snow in winter) and the Japanese alps in Nagano, etc can be snowy and colder than elsewhere too. Hope that helps!

I'm not sure where you're from so it may not be a big deal to you but I feel like I gotta warn somebody that Japanese summers are hot and super humid and Jun-Oct is typhoon season. Breezes don't help because they're carrying moisture from the Pacific. I'm the exact opposite which is exactly why we're going in the Winter. Not gonna get anywhere near their summer weather lol

Wow, you'd die if you went to Canada, -35 "C to -45"C. The biggest surprise to me after moving here was to find out that it wasn't that cold comparatively but it often freezes in houses in older houses in winter. Insulation is a new concept in Japan.

If you go to Asakahikawa or Abashiri, it will be much colder than Hakodate.
But the best things in winter are onsen,kotatsu and nabe(hot pot).
I'd love to try a kotatsu! I've seen them in videos and they look so cosy! :-)
Possibly the weirdest experience of my life was being in an outside onsen pool in northern Hokkaido in February. I was very warm but ice was forming on my mustache.

Are you also factoring in the wind chill, because that -11 can easily turn to -20 or below. Canadian winters prepared me to always check the weather before leaving the house, but other than that I would say that the weather there looked tolerable.
The wind chill was extremely cold, especially near the coast in Hakodate in Hokkaido and up the mountain there, admiring the famous night view there! It's the coldest place I've ever been.
To me, coming from the UK, Tokyo feels reasonably mild in winter, but Hokkaido is freezing - I'm sure you'd be able to cope better coming from Canada though!

The good harvest of rice is pleased to do enjoying the moon to look at cherry blossoms in spring, and to see the festival and Yukata, fireworks, pool, sea, in summer in autumn, and it warms ourselves in Kotatsu in the family, and it eats the pan in winter. This is a Japanese style.

My snow boots are from Rocket Dog - not sure if they still have them but you might be able to find them online somewhere! I spotted a few babies and small children in Hokkaido, being pulled along on sleds as it was too snowy for pushchairs! It's extremely cold though so you'll need to wrap them up very warm!
Try putting the heat packs in your shoes, under your feet... It is a game changer!

Hi, Amy. Except Hokkaido, it tends to be warm in winter in Japan. Most ski resorts are crying over the lack of snow in this winter. And a bear has not hibernated yet.
I've heard it's not as cold as usual this year. I hope it doesn't cause too many problems (with wildlife and crops, etc).

I haven't stayed in Narita myself, I've always gone straight into the city (and also don't have kids!) so I might not be much help to you on that. Compared to the UK, I find winter in Tokyo quite mild in comparison - but it depends what you're used to, and you still need to wrap up warm. Heattech's sold in shops and kiosks in Tokyo in winter, so I can only assume it's common to wear it there in winter. But if you travel north in Japan or to the mountains, you definitely need it then! :-) Hokkaido in winter's the coldest place I've ever been!

@@woodykusaki9970 Yes bring layers! I'd usually wear a coat, glove, scarf and hat in the winter. It can be warm indoors with the heating cranked up, so you can remove layers if you get hot in restaurants, etc.

All my Hokkaido videos were filmed in February - as you can see it's very snowy! However it depends on the area; it's only snowy in Hokkaido, north Japan and mountainous regions. In Tokyo it might only snow once or twice, or not at all. In Sapporo, the snow melts in mid to late March, and elsewhere depends by area. Japan's a long country so the climate varies depending on where you are.

There's always a chance you might get sick... so wrap up warm, look after yourself and take care! Thankfully I was ok when I was there!

@@charryt5714 I don't know the average height, but I'm sure you wouldn't have too many problems! Sometimes you might just find you don't have that much legroom (similar to when you're on a plane) but it wouldn't be too bad I'm sure.
Ever considered a USB heated body warmer?....Just plug into a power bank and it will give you heat for pretty much the whole day...Anything from 8 -12 hr with a 10000mAH power pack!...So I have read...might be worth considering if you get back to Hokkaido in winter..or anywhere really..Thinking of getting one myself...I am in Scotland and it gets pretty cold here at times.....With wind chill it could get down as close to -6 and beyond...Also USB heated gloves might be another addition. Maybe even socks!!..Bikers use them.😊
Good idea! I heard construction workers in Japan sometimes have air con jackets, so maybe heated ones exist too!
@@cakeswithfaces The jackets are pretty cheap on eBay..about £25...So not expensive to take a chance. After all I'm sure some of the standard thermals are not that cheap..so..Just had a look..you can also get usb heated gloves and mittens..Plus heated socks!...Some have rechargeble build in batteries..And also you can get heated insoles..if you don't fancy socks..Socks with built in are the most expensive..about £25-30 .Anyway..I'm sure you can check them out yourself...Could be just what you need when the temp gets real parky!...Arigatou!

The Winter weather comes down from Siberia. The snow drops in the mountains so by the time it reaches Tokyo it's nothing but cold, nasty wind (oh joy!),... hmmm, I wonder if people are still using the highly-dangerous-poisonous-gas-spewing kerosene heaters these days,... I haven't seen the kerosene truck in the neighborhood in years (^_^),... skiing, ramen, in-season crab and buri, I guess these are the only good things about Winter! Tips from a Japanese about how you make Kairo warm as quickest as possible in the cold air.
1. If you can, open the bag INSIDE the store you bought.
2. Put it in your pocket right after you open it then squeeze it a bit so that the temperature goes up quickly.
The mistakes you made in the video are;
you are holding it in the cold air,
you didn't wrap it up.
Next time you get the warm temperature from it quicker!
