Can You Handle a Recumbent Bike?

- Here we demonstrate recumbent bike handling - meaning the steering and agility of a recumbent bike in tight spaces or perhaps for commuting. For many, recumbent bikes are mysterious or misunderstood regarding their handling capabilities. I think recumbent bikes are perfect for high traffic areas, tight spaces, and commuting.

My Cruzbike Q45 is the most agile recumbent I’ve tried. Much more maneuverable.

I wondered about this very problem when I saw your video announcing your buying this bike. Turning your legs as you turn the bike will be interesting to watch.
OK, I watched it. Nice job. My LWB Bacchetta Agio would not match your tightest turns, at least not with me driving, but overall I think we could do the same course. I notice you didn't pedal in the turns. That was a restriction of my previous bike, a Bacchetta Giro, but for a different reason. On that, the pedals could hit the front wheel, as they did on the Bella I tried. The Agio has just a bit more clearance.
The first recumbent I owned, in the late 80s, was a Lightning P-38. It had the same problem, but was the fastest recumbent I've ever owned.
Thank you for adding your experiences! Just had a look at the Lightning p-38 online. That's a proven geometry. Looks comfortable and fast!
Cruzbike is one of the best for tight turns
Impressive! I could probably ride those paths on the old Cruzbike Sofrider, but slower, and with a lot of cursing under breath.

6:53 I didn't realize you can prop a recumbent bike up on a curb like that. I know how to prop up a vertical bike onto a curb with its pedal, so I figured the pedal was essential in doing so.
These curbs are almost perfect 90 degree angles to the ground so it worked to just balance it. Good eye!

Wow you've got some great control of that bike. I recently got myself a 3 wheeled bikeE recumbent and there is definitely a learning curve but I am enjoying the experience.

@@corybikes I'm sorry, I just re-read my msg. Mine is also a 2 wheeled. And it will be so fun once I can get the hang of taking off lol. I definitely want to take it on a long ride.
I'm very confident you will get the hang of it. Two ways you can try:
1. In a lower gear, sit back with one pedal up and ready for you to push.
2. If you can, run a couple steps to get momentum then sit back and pedal. I show that in my "What it's Like" video.

you make a very detail video of a bike l am interested in, wow what a concept, front wheel drive.. bike is so different from the Bacchetta, can the Bacchetta make those turns at low speed?
Thank you! Yes, I think the Giro 20 Bacchetta is comparable in turning capability. The 26 (larger wheel) Bacchetta bikes probably cannot make those turns because the front wheel can contact the rider's feet.
I'm curious as to how your front wheel drive train affects the steering of the bicycle. I have a SWB 'bent with rear wheel drive and a small (20") front wheel (it's an old Barcroft Virginia Ti). It must complicate steering a bit with each pedal stroke - perhaps the nimbleness / handling are also affected.
You're right that the pedaling affects the steering. I have a video that goes in depth on that subject. The Cruzbike review video. Sounds like your bike is like the Bacchetta I had.
The steering and drive are connected and can affect each other, but not as much as you might think. The FWD MBB allow pedaling through any angle of turn. There is no heel strike. There’s also no boom sticking out to the outside of a turn like other SWB designs.
🎉H. Newbie bike packer, to be, here. Just found your you tube channel. I. Also, own a road bike and a recumbent. I was interested in your comparison of the two in windy conditions. Very interesting results.
I haven’t been through all your videos and comments …. I’m interested, and I’m sure I will find the answers here. (You are very thorough). Why did you switch to a bachetta? I see the Cruz has the equal size rims front and back and a different drive train. (I own a phantom lightning).
2. I am not far from tarpon springs. (Inverness). Do you have a bike shop that you would recommend for the recumbent? My telescoping ‘handlebar’ requires repair.

Hi! Thanks for the good words and I'm glad the content is helpful! I switched from Bacchetta to Cruzbike actually. I was riding the Bacchetta for 5-6 years and it was great. But the Cruzbike was a new challenge and I'm faster on it.

I enjoy watching your videos and have a 3 wheel recumbent. I’m interested in the Cruzbike and need to get up to BR to try one out. I thought you needed to lead (foot forward) with the inside foot on turns with a Cruzbike. Also, looks like you aren’t getting proper leg extension on the down stroke? Is that why you are able to turn with you feet in any position?
Great observation! If you think about it, a bike turn doesn't move the wheel too drastically, so if you are properly fitted to the bike, you can pedal just fine through most turns. But you're right that sharper turns cause over extension and you have to lead with the inside leg.
