    Heya, I have a dilemma, I got invited to a Cambs residential but I don't want to go because I'm too anxious, many people advise me to go however I think if it's not beneficial I won't go because it's stressing me out quite a bit, realistically on my ps would it be beneficial?

    Is it important to include your achievements (e.g. obtaining gold award in Olympiads) in you personal statement? I have the grades required for applying to Oxbridge, but I did not participate in Olympiads in my high school career... Will not having any achievements in competitions hinder you from receiving an invitation to an interview?

      If you have any achievements which are relevant to your course, I think it'd be great to include them in your personal statement. Even if the achievements are not relevant, it could potentially be helpful. For example, if you're applying for maths and you play the violin, mentioning that in your personal statement could help you come across as a well-rounded and motivated individual, but by itself it won't be enough to get you in. If you've got the right grades you'll probably get an interview given that 75% of people who apply get an interview. Not having any achievements in competitions shouldn't hinder your application if the rest of your application is very good, especially if you didn't have the opportunities to compete competitions. I did a few olympiads at school, though the only one I scored very highly in was in year 13 and after I submitted my personal statement, so my personal statement didn't mention any olympiads. I did mention other competitions I was involved in and it might have helped me stand out, but also keep in mind that sometimes your personal statement isn't that important if the interviewer barely reads your personal statement.

      @@IlyasCambridgeAdvice Thank you for your advice! I participated in only one Olympiad this year and I did get an award but it's not really "impressive" where I had obtained a gold or silver award, so I'm considering whether or not I should include it in my personal statement... I will speak to my school counselor and see what she thinks!

      @@syndeywong4673 If you didn't do well then it might be better not to mention it, but if you sell it well then it could be good!

      @@IlyasCambridgeAdvice Hi I'm back with another question :D In writing about the super-curricular activities you took part in in your personal statement, is it more important to describe the PROCESS of the activity (e.g how I conducted research, and things like that) or is it better to just get to the reflection aspect (e.g. the skills I gained, what I learned from the experience) of it?

    • @IlyasCambridgeAdvice
      @IlyasCambridgeAdvice  Před 3 lety +1

      @@syndeywong4673 I think both are important and can be worth writing about, and the more important one will vary depending on the situation. Unfortunately when it comes to personal statements it's very hard to say anything definitive because every personal statement is unique!

    Is it cliche to talk about the relevance of my Alevel subjects to the degree i am pursuing in ?

    • @IlyasCambridgeAdvice
      @IlyasCambridgeAdvice  Před 3 lety +4

      It's not really a cliche but I'm not sure how helpful that will be. Keep in mind that most people who apply to your course do similar A-levels, so talking about how your subjects are relevant to the degree probably won't make you stand out. The admissions tutors probably know about the relevance of your subjects to your degree, unless you're taking unusual A-levels. If you want to talk about your A-levels, it might be better to talk about how much you enjoyed them or how you liked specific parts of your A-levels, and the relevance of the parts you liked to the degree you're applying for.
