The album was put out during George W. Bush's 2nd term. This song, along with another song on the album called 'Holiday', is a reaction and protest about what was going on in the country at the time. Protest against invading Iraq, the rise of cable news' influence, changing the name of French Fries to American Fries, and more.

I always took "I'm not apart of a redneck agenda" as wordplay on "the gay agenda" the line just before that Billie sings "Maybe I'm the f*ggot America," as he's bisexual. He feels America doesn't care about those kinds of minorities, "we weren't the one who where ment to follow". He flips the script on right-wing homophobes by saying that *they* are the ones pushing an agenda. Just my interpretation

Stop listening to cnn and msnbc and maybe actually talk to a right winger and you’ll realize how stupid you are for believing everything you hear on TV. This whole album can 100% be attributed to the Biden administration right now. He may have wrote it about Bush, but right now it’s very reminiscent of what we’re going through. It's not just a musical featuring the music of Green Day, it is the American Idiot album put on stage; the original album carries a story and concept all the way through it. American Idiot (The Musical) is not like those commonly referred to as "jukebox musicals" along the lines of "Mama Mia" or "Rock of Ages."

This single marked the return of Green Day.
Believe it or not, this band was moderately successful in the mid 90s. Us metal and grunge fans loved them but they never had any major chart success that I can remember, they were just kind of a niche punk rock band only those in the scene knew about. Then they had a quiet spell and a lot of people forgot about them.
Then, one day in 2004, American Idiot suddenly exploded and it was being played all around the world. Green Day became one of the biggest rock bands in the world almost overnight, leading to the biggest shows they'd ever performed.
They were always great back in the 90s, but it took American Idiot for them to get the recognition they deserved from the start.
    They're awesome live.

One live concert performance that has to be seen, is Green Day's performance of their song, "Paper Lanterns" at Woodstock '94. A big fight broke out in the mud at the front of the stage, and the band did their best to stall to allow police and security officers to get to the front row and stage areas. Mike Dirnt (the bass player) was badly hurt when some of the fans stormed the stage, and he required emergency dental surgery once their set was over, and they left the area.

Favorite Green Day song is "I Want to Be Alone". This song is on their first official album which was released in 1991, around the time the band members were all in their late teens. (all members were born around 72') For me the band defines how life is viewed, in the eyes of teenagers. And this song in particular, really shows what a teenager would think and relate to. Especially, being written by the band during the real "teens angst" of their own lives.

I'm going back and checking out your old videos.
Politically I could probably be considered on the right, but even though this song was a spit in the face of "George Bush's America" I've always freakin' loved it. This song slams and Green Day is making a statement I can't necessarily argue with in this one.
Weird Al has a parody of this called "Canadian Idiot"

Might be a different answer on a different day but my favorite Green Day song is "Coming Clean"

My fave song off of the CD. Holiday is also good. But this song sounds like 90's GD, which IMO is their best era.

This and 21 Guns ate my two favorite Green Day songs. Love them, so progressive.

Surprised I haven't seen any mention of Green Day's song 'Good Riddance'. It's a very calm and deliberately pensive song, heavily contrasting most of their songs. It's beautiful.

Tré Cool, the drummer, utilizes the toms a lot...one of the few that does unlike most use the snare and high hat a lot. Also you were thinking of Nickelodeon that did the slime thing lol

Take what you will from the lyrics & video, just keep in mind the time and landscape it came out in. Context is key.
