- This is probably the dirtiest evaporator coil I have had to clean. I have already cleaned four of them this summer when people have called Fox Family Heating and Air because their system was not running correctly

Very enlightening! Now I know what needs to be done at my house. Thanks!
they most likely did not have a filter if you have ever in your life change your filter your evaporator will not look this way. This is by far the most extreme case I've ever seen
I would love to see the year-over-year energy bill before and after this cleaning. Not to mention improved health, and comfort. NEGLECT is how homes get to be sick homes.
@@tjdot8 I got one very close to that, customer was so happy when the AC was working again
@@hvacmania8323 I would be a huge change
thats pretty bad wouldnt have worked for a long long time
@@tjdot8 it was flooding their house I got rid of the flooding and I fixed the air conditioning they were extremely happy to say the least
Thankyou Fox family. This video gave me the info I needed to tackle this job. My hvac system is now operating as it should. Many thanks!
THANK YOU -- this is the most thorough VIDEO on this topic. Everyone else talks a lot and I have no idea what they're talking about on what to do with the cleaning!
A Job well done I wish there we're more people like you who do a proper honest work .. respect
Very good video Sir. I'm glad I read the Caption about cleaning a dirty Evaporator coil. I got exactly what I needed.
I love it when you handed him the coil sweater! lmao
Good job. You have a lot of patience, what a mess. Thanks for sharing.
Informative, concise and to the point, and quick! Nice presentation.
Great job! Your video is the second one that I have learned how to remove a piece of metal triangle and clean the coil.
I’m in sac too, real cool.
I was just told I’ll need a new coil and condenser,
Upon looking for advice on Nextdoor, I came across a neighbor who’s in the trades and he’s going to show me how to do this.
He doesn’t think my R22 unit doesn’t necessarily need to be replaced yet, he believes this to be my problem.
For all I know, my coil hasn’t been cleaned for 40 years. This is going to be FUN.
Nice to know you guys are around.
Another job well done Greg!
Thanks for sharing.
I can't comment till I open and see mine. You my man great job.
Mine wasn't quite that bad (my sweater was only 1/8" thick) but thank you for showing how to clean these out. Super easy, and now part of my spring routine before A/C season.
I have this same problem. I am a certified tech and want to do this myself for my mother in law's place. The problem is, the landlord keeps getting in the way of every service tech that has been nice enuff to come out. She's sabotaging the repair. This is a 2 ton evap with a fixed metering device. If I remove the cover and the condensation drain line outta the way, will the Delta plate look like this one? Because of so, I'll do this myself to help my mother. Thank you.
Thank you for sharing your knowledge I really appreciate you God bless you and your Family
Usually on something that funky I suggest a pull and clean but looks like you did one hell of a job in place. Good stuff Greg!
Do you have a video on how to pull it?
I want to pull it out and clean it outside like my ac guy used to do it...I call him and he doesn't answer so i need to do it myself
great video Greg, I don't believe I have came across one that bad. hard to think it could have been working within the past couple of years.
Love cleaning A-coils!!! Good job
For a leave in place clean, you did a very good job.
good find brother!! you did wonders on that one... imagined filter was changed out also keep up the good work and way to go!!
i really dig this show,,,the camera is so great here,,,i bet a lot of units need this operation doctor...
Thank you. Single mom here trying new things (without a clue). But I can clean anything! I thought it would be more complicated and techy.
Not a service tech but you definitely want to turn off the breaker and any other safety disconnects and turn the thermostat off
Great job. While cleaning the coil in place I cut a piece of card board to place
at the bottom to catch any debris.
Watch Out ...... that was going to be my question. (I will use cardboard) While my husband handles his company, I’m responsible for the house. Today, I thought I’d check the a/c out. Do you need to treat the outside of the coils??? I want to pull the blower and clean it but it’s getting HOT and I’m worried I won’t get it all done. This is just gross!!!! We move in 5.5yrs ago, the house is 40yrs. I’m pretty confident previous owners never had it clean. I hope to breathe better.
Winter’s Soul the one in my apartment is caked and disgusting, not even a filter in it. I want to clean it but damn thing is so disgusting from (probably years of) other people I’d rather move to a house just for a cleaner ac unit hahaha
Nice job Greg!
Great Job Greg
Oh my word. You did an excellent job of cleaning those coils. I"m afraid to see what mine might look like, since my ac has been freezing up. Commendable job.
Once I had a customer with a "permanent type air filter"; every two months she took it out and reversed it! The evaporator was fully stopped up. It cost her plenty!
We had an H-coil like that in the attic on a rental we purchased. How the unit ran like that I had no idea. The tenant never complained about the low air flow or smell. The house had some interior damage so we just didn’t make the repairs till they moved. When they moved enough hair came out of that coil to make two dogs. We even had to put the garden hose on it and let it run out the drain. The nasty smell turned fresh and clean immediately. Pretty much the same thing just horizontal.
Nice woolly blanket 02:15 . Home probably has many animals within.
Good job cleaning up the mess.
appreciate... used these instructions to clean my nasty a-coils today
Good quality work done!
another excellent video thank you for sharing fox!!! dang I wish I can ride along with you I have my universal epa's both lil knowledge under my belt, I drive over the road rest and watch your video's I'm in palo alto now great work!!!!
Wow that's so cool man. thanks for watching. I really appreciate it!
Thank you for the video....very informative!
Great video! Good job
Great job keep up the good work 👍👍
I've run into this several times before. So thick that when you peel it off you say, "oh wow this coil knitted me a sweater!"
great video have to add this to my to do list.... Thank you
Good job
Changing the filter at the right time or getting and maintaining an EAC can stop the buildup from happening.
I bet it’s not freezing up now😁. You’re a better man than I. I’d have tried to get them let me pull it and then if I had to clean it, used their garden hose and back flushed that POS. Great video!
Great video. I really like being the third technician on a call like that. Amazing how a dirty evap coil mimics a low charge. I clean them and then usually remove refrigerant.
All Hours Maintenance are you in Florida?
Great video!
God I absolutely love the sound of the brush brushing the coils.
Great video thank you so much
I swear I heard it say "awww" after you took of it's blanket!
Incredible 😮.
Love the background music
Wow. I bet you can really feel a lot more air coming out of the vents inside the house.
I bought an old ac and the evap coils looked just like this I was like how was this thing even working which it was somehow but works much better now :)
In addition I used a air comb blowing back through from the other side and then used blast a coil at the end.
Dude!!!! Lmaooo that's a nice sweater on that A-coil 😂😂 you did a great job without pulling it out! Just awesome man keep going hard! #HVACLIFE
Fuck tyson
Good job btw.
Best video ever
Fox 🦊 great vid. I’m a tech myself & I was cracking up when you found the gum 😆. I bet your saving that gum for later. to stick your it on your condensers contactor closed 😀. Then I hear him say oh $hit & he didn’t even get the bill yet.
hahahahah!
Mine probably looks like that!! :O I have cleaned mine previously (years ago, I think!), but I thought I should get someone else's perspective!! I didn't use a spray before, but might have to get it!
Great video. Thanks a million, or at the very least, $400+.
it looks like they did not use filters at one or more times nice job greg
Please post the liquid spray cleaner brand and the little brush you used. Thanks for the informative video.
I spy a dewalt right angle drill/driver adapter 2:05 :)
who needs a filters when the evap coil is the best filter :))
Lmfao
It's funny I just same some recommendation from Nextdoor regarding to Fox Family and now I run into this video.
Honestly mine is about as bad. Just got the place but the stuff on the coil was more like a caked on layer of gunk. The home had some renovations done, but a super, super cheap filter. Its the cheapest one you could buy at a home depot. This is what the previous home owners had been using. There was a box with 2 more so I tossed them all out. Used a stiff AC brush and Weber coil cleaner , along with some concrobium, but there is still leftover gunk stuck between the fins. Planning to use a mister to mist the concrobium in the ac ducts. Praying all goes well.
Dang! i thought I’d seen some super dirty coils, but that one is the “Blue Ribbon Baby!” You could make a coat out of that thing! i guess nobody ever told them about return air Filters.? LoL 😆
Dirty like a refrigeration condenser 😂😂. That was a good one.
Wow and I thought mine was bad. Currently cleaning coils and all that stuff on mine.
Terrific! Bravo! Question the coil housing..should it have a top cover on it or open to view?
awesome music...
Nice video. What about the brush and vacuum cleaning? The evap fins didn't get bent and messed up? I thought they were very thin and delicate
This man just got a free blanket.
You give a new definition to hair plug. What is your service coverage area? How far south do you travel?
Chewing gum on the coil: Tales of the Unexplained
Cool video. I have a customer that owns a candy store, the RTU return is literally above the cotton candy machine, the first PM service I ever did the evaporator looked just like this job but it was cotton candy and dust...
Oh my god. cant even imagine!
How sweet!
Great music and very helpful. I'm cleaning my coils on my own.
You can get a similar effect if you do not change the air filter. When we moved into our house the previous owner (college girl with no knowledge of how to care for things) had been changing the filter at the return until eventually the air flow was so bad that she left it out completely. She never saw the 2nd filter right in front of the evaporator coil and it was so caked with dirt, dust and hair that the AC tech first thought there was a Freon issue when he started his tests. He noticed the low air flow and I showed him the return and he saw the 2nd filter and how badly caked it was. After removing that 2nd filter the difference in cooling was the difference between night and day. Cooing was way better and power bills dropped.
I did one like that on a package unit then after I got it back running the discharge line blew
Always great to see a journeyman in action. Great work. One question i have is why not vacuum up before spraying the coil?
The spray basically loosened the crud to vac easily. I do the same. After I clean it, I’ll give it another spray and when it sweats, it’ll wash out the remainder crud and basically rinse itself clean into the drip tray and out.
What kind of spray and where do I get some? I have globs of growth in the line and drain pan...is bleach not recommended?
That gum was plugging a leak in the coil from the last tech. You going to be back soon for low charge. ;)
I bought a house from some folks that had 5 small dogs inside and same thing pressures were good but a/c not working
I took inspection plate off and it looked like a custom made winter wool coat over the a coil that was 1/4 thick dog hair. Cleaned it off and house was 65 on a 100 degree day
The renter used to live in New Jersey and he complained to me that he had never seen water leaking from ac unit. After I got fix the ac run again, I told him that Florida is a hot weather if you decided to move down here, no comparison.
When you don’t change a filter it gets blocked restricting airflow even more so that less air can get to the coil. What looks like what happened was that they didn’t use a filter period
True. Or maybe they used something very unrestrictive like those cheap 3 buck ones landlords use for rentals.
I just cleaned mine thoroughly a few days ago. We had a thick layer like this on our A coil on the underside too. I used a coil brush to brush it off and a metal brass brush to get more off. Then I too used Nu Calgon coil cleaner no rinse too. It cleaned up fairly good but isn't perfect. What a tremdous difference it made though! Thanks and God bless! 😎 🎉 👍 🙏
Good and clean now. I always cringe when I have to push the distributor lines around like that. Maybe leaking in the near future
Great video!!! I have a 10 year old Rheem - my ductwork started sweating. I've never had this cleaned. The HVAC guy said everything was working perfectly. Could this be one of the reasons? Thanks in advance to anyone that responds...
How do you clean the furnace after some of that falls into it?
LOL 🤣 All of it is due to not changing the filter. I love the customers that say they do change their filters, only to find a rung on there evap coil. LOL, great job!
Ugh- need a question answered and I can’t find it online. The inside part of my AC (in front of where I slide the filter in) is really dirty and falling apart. The inspector said it was because the entire unit was old so that was expected). He said I would need to replace it within a year or two. In the meantime, I bought a peel and stick insulation mat and cut it up to cover the shredded old insulation. Is that ok or not? I think the exposed shredded insulation was causing all this dust in my house.
i want to do mine... what is best cleaner to use? thax
Was this work done at the local dog pound? WOW great video.
This might sound like a dumb question, but why dont you vacuum the coils before you spray them?
Mine might have been worse than this unfortunately. Poor tech spent a good hour-hour and a half cleaning it out. Wish I could post pics.
That is probably what mine looks like. I went from heat in the winter that didn't stink to Air conditioning that smells awful. It produces cold air, but it is 20 year old unit. I have a labrador that looses more harm than I thought one ever grew. I sprayed the whole upper side with bleach water. I wasn't aware that Triangle shape sheet metal comes off the front. I will take it back apart and clean the under side. I have never ran mine without a filter though so it probably isn't that bad.
Lol, dog be like “you found my hair stash”
Luv ur videos
How did the hair get past the furnace filter ?
Nice pre-filter there. What does the rest of the house look like?
goodness! i think chewbaca got chopped up in the blower and this is the result! lol
JEM HVAC VA II hahahah
when do you know when you have o remove the evaporator to clean it outside?
Inside the fins is packed with dirt ,I would of pulled it. But good job doing it in place
I noticed a steel brush was used to clean the evaperator. Won't that be too strong to bend the fins ?
Good Video. That one was Very Nasty. You might want to start Wearing Gloves and a Repirator when doing stuff like this. it Helps keep away the throat cancer and getting a nasty cough after 36 years of this stuff. i wish i had done it. Hell of a job on this one. NO Filter on that one for many years. maybe add a Co2 Blow thorough the coil to Really make a difference and get it where it needs to be. Hell of a JOb ! Nicely done.
Mine is sealed in the attic how can I clean it? And how far do you guys travel?
What brand is that evaporator coil? I like the way the plate on the front was easier than most to take off. Back in the day you would see the front plate on coils that weren't impossible to take off. but today they are usually covered by copper piping and or the valve...
You took out quite a bit but a lot was still left
