  • The Kepler track is a 60km loop that takes you alongside glistening alpine lakes, through dense beech forest and up into a spectacular alpine environment. This video takes you through the alpine section of this ‘Great Walk’ to help you prepare for the harsher conditions, particularly in exposed areas. With good planning and sensible decision making you can use this video to plan for the hike of a lifetime and make it home safely.

    A note from Holland, Europe. Tramped the Kepler-track in february 1988. Six out of seven days bad weather, but the huts were nice and brandnew. On february 24th the track was officially opened by high ranking officials, who used a helicopter for their "tramp". Since the weather was so bad. they offered me a helicopter-ride from the Luxmore-hut to the Luxmore-pass. This is the only time ever I got a lift on a helicopter !!

    I love Kepler more than other tracks like Routeburn and Milford because of its looping track, where you don't have to hitchhike or swapping car keys to other trampers (my personal experience) when you reach the final points of the track and want to drive back to your hotel etc. It's more well-maintained too compared to others.

    Hiked it in Feb 2003. Watching the scenery makes me feel like it was yesterday. one of my best traveling days ever. 4 days of constant sun after a snow blizzard.

    I did this in June. It was very hard. Snow blizzard, knee deep snow. Took 8 hours from Luxmore Hut to the next one. So keep in mind :)

      Only the brain dead. NZ sadly averages twelve trampers killed each year mostly due to gross stupidity. The Greenlea helicopter rescue responded to over thirty rescues on just one track alone last year. And for those overseas visitors, a one hour flight to Rotorua for treatment will cost almost as much a biz class ticket from NZ to Europe return.

    Nice. Keep our language; tramping, great word.

      Blair Macdonald it takes a little extra explanation for some international visitors, but it’s a Kiwi peculiarity and one that’s likely to last for a while yet!

    In New Zealand a hike is a walk which is done within a day whereas a tramp is a lot longer with overnight stays in either huts or camping.

    Day trip how far u can walk and come back to Te Anau...??

    • @YazzyYou
      @YazzyYou Před 3 lety +1

      Water taxi to Dock Bay or Brod Bay, then hike back to Te Anau. About 3.5 hours counting from when you get on the boat.
      Bus to Rainbow Reach, then hike back to Te Anau. About 5 hours counting from when you get on the bus.

      At each of the huts, 2 of which were noted in the video. Speak to Doc to find out more

      @binman5233 Před 4 lety

      The huts are booked online and are open for booking usually from June. Check the Department of Conservation website. In the the height of the season the popular tracks will book up very, very quickly. I suggest you have your itinerary planned and be aware of when the bookings open.
