  • We started on Moose lake at Williams and Hall outfitters. Only 2 of our party of 6 needed gear, the rest of us had our own equipment. They can supply anything you need including food. We went over our trip details with them and they told us about any things of importance. They also gave us advice on some of the better campsites and fishing area's.
We had dinner there on our day of arrival and then slept in the bunk houses.
The next morning we had breakfast and took a shuttle with all our gear to the first portage. It saved 9 miles of paddling,(about 3 hours)!
It was then 4 hours and 6 portages to get to Knife lake. No motors are allowed in this section of the BWCA so it was very peaceful. Our first campsite was on the west end of Robbins island. It was a nice campsite but we knew that there were better one's. Vince and Tony went scouting and found a great campsite. This site had it all, plenty of room to spread out, on a point so surrounded by water, nice breeze and a sunset view looking west. All sites have a fire pit with a cooking grate and a toilet.
There are side trips to do from this site. We were right where the north knife lake arm splits from the south knife lake arm across from Thunder point. You can paddle over and hike to the top for a great view west of Knife lake. You can also paddle 5 miles east to the waterfall.
Over all the fishing was disappointing but was not terrible. Although no walleye were caught, we were catching a lot of smallmouth bass and a few northern.
It was a great trip and good to get away from cars, motors, phones, computers and the city. Already planning the next one!

Excellent trip, nothing like the outdoors for the soul! We are going to do Brule lake next year but with no portages, just staying on Brule for a week. Then we can bring tons of gear and set up a really nice camp!
