You have got to love how the seniors just gave up singing their lines completely when they went to high five the line. And Rinon of course, who was the the most collected on stage, even though she was the youngest. She said a few times she doesn't cry at sad occasions, only when she's frustrated or angry at herself (like the 2015 transfer orientation or the midterm test).
This, the first, was probably the most emotional graduation. I remember Moa saying in 2014/2015 some members didn't (want to) believe the seniors would be really graduating and leaving the group until they actually began preparing for the show.
It's also not rare in Japan to cry at graduation ceremonies. It's not like in the west when they throw a party and are glad to be out of school. A lot of Japanese say these were their most happy years, even when they're out of school for a long time. Being a student there is a bit like living in a bubble, sheltered from a lot of the problems you face in "the real world". Especially at private and more prestigious schools. Essentially the only things students have to really care about are grades, their clubs/circles and friends/classmates (and maybe the occasional part-time job in high school/university), the adults around them (family and teachers) take care of everything else. So leaving school (or eventually university) is like breaking out of that bubble and facing the often harsh environment of work and the pressure to not be an "embarassment" to your family and society. They also don't get to see a lot of their friends/club- and classmates on a regular basis anymore, especially if they live in a more rural area and the majority goes to bigger cities to attend university.
Oh and... a few people already said it, but not that many people in Japan know of Sakura Gakuin. They are a very small blob on the Idol business map and an even smaller one when you consider entertainment as a whole. Sure, they hold ticket lotteries and stuff sometimes, but that's also because they only perform in venues with a max capacity of 2k at the most for their festivals and the graduations often take place in considerably smaller venues. Most of their fans today are probably like you, who found them through graduates.

I love the Road to Graduation finals, all of them are great shows. It's really rare to see Su cry like this. I'm so proud of Marina to hold her tears during her speech. The graduation finals are big events and there are a lot of fans not only staff and parents. In Japan, senpai (senior) and kōhai (junior) represent an informal hierarchical interpersonal relationship found in organizations, associations, clubs, businesses, and schools.

I think you're talking about the '98s, specifically Raura, and Hinata to a lesser degree.
That friction made Nene consider leaving the group, and I think that Marina pretty much stayed out of it.
To be fair, at that point the traditions hadn't really been established.
Yes, the first President was Ayami, the oldest member, but it wasn't clear at the beginning what the criteria for the next President would be.
As it turned out, it's always been a member of the senior class (and Su was the only senior her year), but it hasn't always been the oldest, and although it seems to carry a lot of weight in the decision, it hasn't always been the senior who has been a member for the longest time.
Once Su was officially appointed, the other members supported her.

    • @0okamino
      @0okamino Před 3 lety +1

@@rickwagner- I do think the doubts about Su as leader were justifiable enough at that time, but, fortunately for the group, they turned out to not reflect how it would go. She really buckled down, got to work, and made it clear that the same was expected of the others. The results are clear to see, but I'm actually glad there was some bucking against it just being made de facto, as it likely made her even more determined to prove herself. Good thing cooler heads prevailed, so we still had Nene in the group, too. I've wondered if that whole drama factored into Marina being next president instead of Nene, in as much as perhaps Nene didn't even want the role after going through that before, with Raura and Hinata coming to their own realizations about it as well. Of course, I'm sure Marina being the most active member, and still keeping up to speed had plenty to do with it. :D

Considering how successful many of the graduates have been, Sakura Gakuin isn't really that big in Japan, at least not compared to some of the major Idol groups.
That's one of the reasons it's ending August 31st of this year.
In the past it's been more of a training ground, than a profitable enterprise in its own right.
They have lotteries for the live shows, and their fans known as Fukeis (guardians) often wear dress clothes like suits and ties for the graduation concerts.
The vast majority of people at their shows are just fans, if very dedicated ones.
I was looking at flights to Japan when Kano, Soyoka, Tsugumi and Momoe were getting ready to graduate last year, but then we had a global pandemic. : (
MAGZ, were you asking about "kouhais"? A kouhai is a junior, the opposite of a "sensai" (senior).

_Sakura Gakuin isn't really that big in Japan_
Which rise the question, why the heck are they this high in quality for such a small operation (and they're just middle school girl to boot). Much higher turnout in term of quality per investment than much bigger group out there, For example If You put 1000 investment in like, well, the numbers groups, you will get 1200 quality performance but SG can do 100 investment with 150 quality performance as middle schooler.
_In the past it's been more of a training ground, than a profitable enterprise in its own right._
It has become even more of a training ground with younger girls, like their summer outing special, other idols would do silly games to get a laugh (well, SG did as well) but SG had acting contest in 2018 and voice acting contest in 2019, even when they're eating during the trip they turned it into food report training. They are not even present themselves as Idol group pretending to be school anymore, just talents development group doing idol as a training.

Well, you have to remember AMUSE is one of the biggest entertainment agencies in Japan as far as I know. They also have a very good reputation when it comes to taking care and being fair to their talent. I think they can freely choose some of the most talented girls they have under contract and put them into SG. Probably no kid and/or parent who wants (their kid) to work in entertainment would say no if they'd get scouted by AMUSE.
Your second point is actually the one which makes it a real mystery for me why they're closing SG. Sure, they don't make much money from the group itself, but looking at the talent that came out of it so far, they probably made a big profit from it in the long run.

I've only known Rinon to cry a couple of times, surprisingly not at her own graduation (although you could see the tears were welling up at times). One time she cried was on stage which I think was during some kind of forfeit game at a live show (can't find the video), and the other was during the results of the 2015 SG mid term nendo test. She was upset that although she was the class president she felt useless and like she was letting everyone down (it didn't help that the teacher asked her if she aimed to be last every test when she still hadn't been called out after everyone else in her grade).
But to me Rinon was the best student council president, since although she wasn't best suited for the position at the start, she has the most new transfer students than any other presidents (6 new members at the same time, 2 of which were Babymetal Avengers Kano and Momoko) and had to teach them the older dances and songs as well as teach/learn new ones herself. During her graduation, both the class teach and the "principal" both said how proud they were of her for stepping up and taking care of all the members.

@ 15:55 . Yes, random strangers are going to go see them. They're called fans. Lol. Y'all are forgetting, this isn't a school. It's an idol group. This is a "public" concert 😆. The last concert for the seniors of the group. Thus the graduating ceremony scenario. Yet, the tears are real.
@ 16:20 Although there are some Amuse and other music executives in the audience, they're actually there just as fans. Tower Records president is a known Moa fan and a huge SG fan. Usually the first 2 rows are for family and VIP. Then come the high priced seats behind those, usually bought by SG fan club members exclusively, followed by Tier 1 and tier 2 ticket holders, which are usually sold in a lottery system. Tier 3 tickets are the cheap seats in the back or balcony. You can enter a lottery to get a tier 1 or 2 ticket, or first come first serve for tier 3 tickets.
I think you have a misconception of what exactly SG is. It's not that complicated. They're are simply an idol group with a theme. Since 2010 was their first year their concerts were smaller. They participated in large idol events and festivals like Tokyo Idol Festival (TIF) for exposure, alongside TV appearances. This is 2011 graduation, so they actually have a growing fanbase at this point. They are not "HUGE" in Japan. They never really were. They tend to get lost in the ocean of idol groups in Japan. They actually became more popular because of exposure from Babymetal internationally. These old shows had small audiences of no more than 1500 at most. By 2014, that number will have tripled. International exposure from Babymetal fans helped grow the SG fanbase tremendously.

Artists in Japan have official fanclubs (that fans pay to be in) and members are basically dedicated fans who get perks and bonuses. There can also be fanclub member only concerts, and I'm guessing the graduation ceremony is one of them. So, it's really just a mix of dedicated fans, real family members and friends, and staff (like Mori sensei). The journalists and suit people are most likely sitting somewhere more private or on the second floor (there probably aren't that many either).

Of course, all of us manly men laugh at these silly Sakura Gakuin girls crying. It is not like their honest display of affection for one another could touch something soft and squishy deep down inside us. It always gets me when Yui begins to falter and Moa instantly moves to comfort her. Rinon does not cry in any of these ceremonies, but in the graduation for the Class of 2014, she gives the most heart-felt farewell to Yui, Moa, Hanna, and Yunano. You have to cut Su a little slack here. Remember, both her and Ayami were in Keren Girls' together before Sakura Gakuin and were very close. I always enjoy seeing MAGZ's girl, Ayaka Miyzoshi, almost lose it. It is not that I take a perverse joy in her discomfort, but that it warms my soul to see the ice princess melt a little. I remember many years ago, a bilingual fan offered to translate any Sakura Gakuin video and asked for suggestions. I picked this one. And it got the most votes. Still one of my favorite videos to cry to.

Thanks for the great reaction, I was joking but not really on seeing LVT cry, but this was the moment when I realized Babymetal was deeper than their enjoyable music, I didn't discover Sakura Gakuin until I was in Japan in 2016, so I missed the babymetal years, but seeing where they came from made me appreciate babymetal more and I became a fan of Sakura Gakuin, but thank you again for the reaction, if it hasn't been already requested, I will request the only sub-unit of Sakura Gakuin that Yui and Moa were a part of, TwinkleStars, the song Please Please Please, but that will be a request down the road

@@mrcharm69 hahaha no I'm going by what they reacted to already, don't get me wrong, mini pati's Shanari Hanari Dorayakihime is probably my most favorite non-Babymetal sub unit song, but Twinklestars would be my favorite non-Babymetal subunit...well maybe Logica? I don't know, with Sakura Gakuin closing, I've been revisiting their discography so I would probably like them all equally at this point

Mori is usually pretty good at knowing how much he can tease one of the members, but with Rinon and Sara it could be hard to tell when they were actually getting upset.
He was pretty gentle with Yume, and especially so with Sakia, until they could stand up for themselves.
