Today we got called out to the Coral Pink sand dunes to rescue someone's ride that had broken while out trail riding. With the tow truck being out of commission we had to put our minds together to figure out how to get this broken razor out!

One thing I learned: never buy a side by side. Those things are way too flimsy
They're so much fun for the right situations. But yeah expect to go through the stock parts lol
People abuse them too. Well me and most everyone. Not really designed for what people do to them.
All about application
Pretty much when you buy a side x side, immediately replace stock radius rods, tie rods, radius rod plate, and on certain side X sides, the control arms as well
Got to understand how to use them properly. They are not trucks but they are not jeeps too!! Treated for what they are they can get you anywhere a truck or jeep can go and lots of places they can't go.

Never, EVER, underestimate the usefulness of a pair of vice grips. haha, I have a pair in every vehicle, every tool box... Duct tape, a pipe wrench, vice grips, and channel locks. You can fix damn near anything 🤣🤣
... and a defibrillator. You alright Ben? I think I peed my pants a little when that puppers alerted on ya 🤣🤣🤣

I was scratching my head trying to figure out how you would fix the aluminum tie rod in the field. Boxing it with angle and welding the angle to the nuts! Amazing! MacGyver's got nothing on you, Paul! Nice work!
I was thinking along the lines of having in the tool bag a set of steel metal pipes that had two holes drilled in, one on either side, with a nuts welded over the holes and a bolts to thread into them to act as set screws. The 2 halves of the tie rod can then be joined like a splint.
I'm only @9:54 viewing the video so I'm looking forward to what Paul comes up with.

MacGyver skills my ass. I've done this. with a Jack handle and used car batteries as a power source with jumper cables as welding leads to fix a tie rod on a UTV that broke on the Rubicon. Now using car batteries to weld, that takes skill.
Between this video and MORR, I have determined all side by sides are made of glass and paper mache.

In a similar situation many years ago, we duct tapped a wrench over a broken tie rod and it got us to the repair shop. Duct tape can fix many a problem. Never leave home without it! As Red Green used to say. "If the women don't find you handsome, they should at least find you handy"!
I would put that tie-rod in a frame and hang it on my garage wall!! That is a Paul Cox original piece of Artwork!! Great job!!!

Paul, have you considered a wrecker boom that would fit into the receiver hitch and works with the wench. Works pretty well on small jobs like 4 wheelers.
Way to go Paul!! You got a good crew!! I could feel the tie rod snapping as soon as you started to try to bend it back. LOL!! Aluminum is not friendly to bending. Nice save though, boxing it with angle and welding the nuts on. Those old folks would have been in a real pickle of you hadn't happened along. Nice that you stopped and got them back on the road.

Paul - you need to fab a Swiss army trailer like Rory’s that you can use with dirt bikes , sxs’s and Jeeps/ohvs for rigs you can’t do a trail fix on .. keep the videos coming and I’ll keep watching

ive strightened a few of those tie rods on the trail. I use a tree saver strap around wheel on the tie rod side and winch it till its straight. just have to be able to anchor other side of machine so it doesnt move. thanks for filming.

What can happen with the samurai transfer case keeping it from shifting. Mine use to get stuck in neutral, but it can happen in any position. The end of the shifter wears down and allows it to move from 1 shift fork to the other one with out moving the fork. Then with the detent balls between the shift works it locks the shifter in place not allowing you to shift. Easy trail fix once you know this. Just pull the boot and shifter out, and reset it to correct position and bolt back together.

Those hi lift jacks are great. I bought two over the years and both were from the scrap yard. The first one had some parts missing, but I gave it to a buddy who had one and he's a fabricator and machinist, so he'll have a way to fix it.
Always amazed of the ingenuity you guys come up with.

I will stick to my Polaris Sportsman Quad. In all of the wheeling that I have done with them, (a lot) The only thing that I broke was a lower control arm bolt. It would bind up on the wheel going forward, but it would go backward. I ended up backing it up for 17 miles. The next Sportsman that I bought had a larger diameter bolt in the lower control arm. Evidently mine was not the only one that broke! LOL I have worn things out for sure, but I go in some very nasty places, and it is to be expected. I have done the Rubicon Trail several times. The hardest trail that I have ever done was the Foredice trail, ( close to the Rubicon) That trail destroyed the bottom of my quad. I had to completely rebuild it after I got home, BUT, it DID get me back to the trailer. It took me and my Son 8 hours to go 7 miles. He had a long-arm kit, 33 inch tires, and an air locker in both ends, in his Jeep, and he had to winch 6 times. I had to winch so many times that I did not even roll up my winch rope, I just wrapped it around the chain saw rack. I have worn out tie rod ends, but never actually bent the tie rods themselves. After watching the carnage done to these side by sides on Paul's and Matt's channel, I will safely say that I will NEVER EVER own one of those expensive, flimsy machines.
I dig your handle! Fordyce trail is knarly!! Lots tougher than the 'Con! Have you tried Dusy Ershim trail out of Fresno? That's tough as well. Really long!
My cousin 'floated' his Jeep on one of the 'creek' crossings on Fordyce. That was terrifying! Guaranteed body damage on even a highly modified rig. We too spent lots of time wrenching and winching! I wouldn't take my 'Yota on the Fordyce if I was paid! I love my old truck! I've been on the 'Con a few times. The Fordyce was a scary freakin trail. Perhaps one of the knarliest in the US. Hell Hole and Barrett's near S. Lake Tahoe are 2 other tough ones. Couple of my buddies have mining claims out there.
@@rollinrat4850 I like your handle too. I went on the Fordice during that week that they lower the water level of the creek, (river) crossing. After I completed the Fordyce I said that I would never do it again, but after I rebuilt my belly-pans, I just might, if for no other reason, just to see if my skid-plate held up. LOL I covered the main part under the engine with 1/4" plate with a piece of 3/8 plastic over that. I also did the same to my floorboards. That trail DOES require a lot of winching. There is just no way that you can climb up a 5' vertical rock with a quad. LOL
My name comes from a 1923 Ford Model T that I made from scratch. I designed it to go off road, and even though it has an open differential, it does extremely well climbing up steep 2 tracks. My buddy named it the "Rat". That stands for "Radically Altered T". Since every weld, and every bracket was made by me, I am the Rat Builder. LOL Thanks for the comment.
@@Rat-Builder Nice! I thought you built big block Chevys maybe. So you're building rat rods? Those are really cool. Many of my bicycles are essentially my 'rat rods' I love building up 'old junk'. With bicycles I can actually afford the highest end carbon fiber junk, but I prefer metal bikes. Steel is real, so we say!
I'm restoring a classic '70s steel road racing bike right now. This won't be a 'rusty rat rod'!
The RAT in my handle is just my initials. Rollin' is what I like doing best on two wheels!
I dig wheelin, but rollin around on bicycles is much cheaper and lots less work. Ive ridden my mountain bike across the entire Rubicon and across the Fordyce Creek, then climbed way up to the top of Grouse Ridge starting not much more than a mile from the end of Fordyce trail. We camped lots at Eagle lake. Sweet campsite if the BFL gangsters don't trash it up! Big Effin Losers are a gang of Sacramento trash people.
That area of the Sierra is some of the toughest, hardcore bike riding on rocks I've done in my life. Its so rocky you can't really go very fast even with modern suspension bikes. Get up one one of the peaks there and most everything is grey granite. Very Few trees. I knew I was gonna crash several times (I certainly did) and wore body armor. The terrain around that particular area is so rough and rocky that moving through it on a bicycle is faster than a wheeling rig. Especially when I can just throw my ride over my shoulder! Lots of 'hike a biking'. Then rattlesnakes are the biggest worry!
The Jeepers on the 'Con weren't very friendly to me on an mtb. Maybe they knew I drove a 'Yota!!
@@rollinrat4850 My Bucket is not a rat rod. It is also not a show car, I don't have the patience for that, besides, in the summer it is my daily driver. It is painted nicely though, and it has a Chevy 396 big block in it that I built. It is all stock though. I like to just go putting around, and I have a very high geared rear end, (3:21), and a low stall converter, so it is not much of a drag racer.
Last year I bought an Eco-Trix E bike. It is a 26"fat tired bike, and I love it. I am 75 years old, so I DO need a little assistance from time to time. I have had guys on mountain bikes pass me while they were going downhill on the Quad trails around here while I was riding my quad. They don't pass me going uphill though. LOL I got my Girl friend a 20" fat tired folding bike from Eco-Trix, but she hated the way that the power came on, so I ordered all of the controllers just like my 26" came with, and with a lot of internet help installed them in her 20" bike. She loves it now. Neither one of my E Bikes has any suspension, so we pretty much stick to the paved bike paths around here in South Eastern Idaho. That is ok too, at least as far as we are concerned.
I also have a 2022 TW200 street legal dirt bike, and a 1994 XT600 street legal dirt bike. I have ridden dirt bikes since 1965. I had a 1986 XT600, and it was a dirt bike that you could ride on the road. This 94 XT600 is a road bike that you can ride in the dirt. There IS a difference.

Nice work Paul! Having bent more than one clutch/brake lever on motorcycles, I have known that fateful "clink" of snapping aluminum. Thankfully, I studied up and learned how to straighten aluminum without snapping. It behaves opposite of steel, so in order to anneal it and start bending back, you need to heat it up real good, about 600+ deg. F, and QUENCH it in water as fast as you can. Don't go nuts with a torch, as it's MELTING temperature is around 1,200 deg. F. You will know it worked 'cause she'll get real easy to bend at first. If it gets firmer and starts springing back a lot before it's straight, rinse and repeat. I've bent 'em back a looong way with several rounds of heat/quench. Snapped 'em every time trying to do it without.

Awesome recovery guys!! If you have a good imagination with things that you might have on hand a person can definitely come up with something that will work!! You should get a couple ramps like what trail Mater uses!!! Like the time trail Mater used his aluminum ramp with holes in it and put under the front end of the driver side hub on a pickup that was blocking a trail!! He tide the front of the ramp up to the front of the pickup and the front of the ramp so that the ramp wouldn’t stay when the truck drove off!!! It actually worked pretty darn good I thought!!! He did have to add a shovel in between the ramp and the bottom of the hub so that when driving the ground wouldn’t wear the bottom ball joint out!!! Plus the ramps also work for many other options that might come about while out on the trails!!! You guys made it all work with what you had and that’s what matters!! Awesome video guys and remember keep up all the hard work buddy’s!!!!

That tie rod fix was inspiring and the help that you gave that couple really could have saved their lives Dave Sparks (diesel Brothers) just recovered a tragic situation where the husband died cuz they got broke down and lost in the desert.
That was an amazing field repair/recovery. BUT . . . Don't EVER, EVER work under a load suspended only by a Hi-Lift Jack. EVER!!! I have used those jacks for years. They are essential for off-road work but they can be killers. Please don't do that again! Put something else under the vehicle as supplemental support. A tire, a rock, a log. Something in addition to the Hi-Lift. I want you guys around for tomorrow and the next day and the next.
I've had my hi-lift slip off a vehicle's two times. You can run a strap around it to hold it towards the vehicle but you still got to watch for the bottom to kick out. Great tool can be super dangerous

PRINGLE TALES (from another Paul) I found a shelf full of long tubes of Pringles at our local Grocery Outlet Store (dented can warehouse) a while back. Those tubes were seriously crunched. No one was buying them because it looked really doubtful that the chips inside could have survived, so the price kept dropping. finally it got so low that I bought one tube just to see. Not a single broken chip! I went back that afternoon and bought the whole shelf worth. I just finally finished up the last of those a couple of weeks ago. Now back to our regularly scheduled comments.
