While subterranean termites are possibly the species of termite that is the biggest threat to the homeowner, there is a subspecies within subterranean termites that is particularly troublesome--the formosan termite. formosan termites are known as “super termites” and can cause a ridiculous amount of damage due to their overly aggressive behavior. formosan termite colonies can also grown to astronomical amounts, up to 10 million in a colony.
Believed to originally come from China and parts of Asia, formosan termites were introduced to the coastal regions of the United States after WWII due to the influx of immigrants coming into the country during that time. Much like subterranean termites, formosan termite have 3 forms of termite distinctions within it’s colony - workers, soldiers and alates (swarmers). The Formosan Termite alate is .5 -.6 inches long with a yellowish-brown body. The soldier formosan stands out due to its, which is the shape of a teardrop and orangish-brown in color.
This breed of termite prefers warmer climates and their population is concentrated mainly across southern parts of the United States including Alabama, Florida, California, Georgia, Hawaii, Louisiana, Mississippi, South Carolina, North Carolina, Texas and Tennessee. Large swarms of formosan termites creep up during the spring and summer months which are the times which it is advised for homeowners to be on high alert and to conduct control programs to prevent these termites from damaging property, which formosan termites are responsible for up to 2 billion dollars in damages annually.
If you discovered that you have formosan termites infesting your home, don’t sit idle. You must take action to put a stop to potentially expensive repairs as these termites are terribly destructive and can multiply quickly. At Solutions Pest and Lawn, we can help you with expert tips and by offering the best termite control products on the market to treat the infestation.
HOW TO GET RID OF FORMOSAN TERMITES: 3 STEP PROCESS
Termite control experts will likely advise you to seek the help of a professional when dealing with a infestation of formosan termites, but they can certainly cost you a pretty penny. If you are willing to take some time out of a day and won’t be bothered by a little sweat, you can successfully take care of an infestation yourself using the same high-quality products the professionals use, minus the expensive labor fees they charge. By following the simple guide we’ve mapped out for you below, you can successfully wipe out even the most fierce of formosan termite infestations and put an end to the destruction they are inflicting upon your home.
Step 1: Formosan termites depend upon moisture for their survival whether in the soil or in your home so the best way to protect your home against termites is to reduce moisture as much as possible in your home both indoors and outdoors. Indoors, we suggest you reduce humidity in crawl spaces, attics and basements with proper ventilation. Outside, we suggest carrying out measures to reduce moisture by diverting water away from the home's foundation to prevent formosan termite access. This can be achieved with properly functioning downspouts, gutters and splash blocks. We also recommend stowing firewood at least 20 feet away from the home and maintain a one-inch gap between soil and wood portions of the home.
Step 2: Once moisture reduction measures are put into place, you can then move onto inspection and control. Formosan termites usually live in the soil, but in some cases they do not require soil contact and create nests in the wood. For termites that are residing in the soil, the best way to control them is by treating the soil with a high-quality termiticide, which depending on the product , can eliminate an entire colony. This can be done by creating a trench around your home or structure and pouring a termiticide mixture in the trench. In areas where there is concrete or slab, holes bust be drilled and the termiticide should be poured in there.
Step 3: There are cases where the infested wood itself must be treated. A borate-based termiticide like Boracare would work best in this situations and will eliminate any termites that are traveling and/or nesting about in your wooded areas. You can also use termite foam which works great in eliminating termites where liquid treatments cannot reach. Spray the foam in areas such as wall voids, around fireplaces, under cement slabs and under soil-filled porches.

When they swarm no matter how well you seal your home they will find a way inside. That doesn't mean you have an infestation. We have major swarms in SW La, like tonight for instance, but after it's over we check throughout the year & are all clear.

It was HORRIBLE last night. When does the swarming end? Or the season? They’re all over the inside of my apartment. Ended up staying in a hotel 🥲. (Can you tell I’m not from LA 😝).

I have formosian and the pest guy quoted both tenting followed by ground treatment around the outside of house. Can’t you just do one or the other?

No... tenting is an inconvenience waste of money.

I have a formosan infestation right now, and just had the soil treated, but unfortunately that takes days or even a week before it starts doing anything... I could see how fumigation might help in this situation

So you’ll kills SOME termites? Not good enough. Why do you ignore real termite baits? You wouldn’t be controlling the termites if a carpenter removes the nest. Sentricon above ground station would work so much better. Nice video though

      Fipronil kills some termites
      Sentricon = Total Colony Elimination.
A large Formosan colony under 3 houses can be eliminated... totally from one location. That little spritz of Fipronil will be avoided by the majority of the colony

@@lancedavis6809 You are completely wrong!!!!! Fipronil is undetectable by termites, its 5 amino acids combined. Termites unknowingly track it back to the colony and queen and entire infestation is dead quick. I had an infestation and laid Fipronil down as per the directions and nothing was alive when my contractor opened the walls a week later. We went ahead and replaced my entire kitchen and all the walls were clear of the termites. NOTHING WAS ALIVE!!!! It killed all the ants too. Fipronil lasts 10 years and kills termites even in the ground in the yard 50 ft away. I was amazed at how well this stuff works and its not a poison like the crap you are pushing!!!!!

Fipronil Plus C alone is not labeled to kill termites.

@@SDCRETX LOL what? Fipronil is the main ingredient for killing termites. By far the best ingredient on the market. Has been proven to be 100% effective for over 16 years with one application, In my county it is required by code to be applied to all the ground under the new slabs prior to being poured!!!!! It is literally labeled a TERMICIDE on the front of Taurus SC label!!!!

@@sotxmatt fipronil is fantastic, but it is toxic to fish and many invertebrates if improperly applied. For prevention, our company utilizes a fipronil barrier in addition to Sentricon termite bait stations. Sentricon utilizes a chitin synthesis inhibitor, a type of insect growth regulator, and is highly effective at eliminating entire termite colonies. You have to be a Certified Sentricon Specialist to obtain and maintain Sentricon termite bait stations though, so they're out of reach of the average consumer unfortunately.
