Anubhav Sinha Interview With Rajeev Masand On Thappad | CNN News18

  • Next week #AnubhavSinha releases his new film #Thappad, his third in as many years. If you've followed the filmmaker's career, you'll have noticed he's evolved into something very different from the man who once made films like Dus, Cash, and Ra.One. In "Mulk" and "Article 15", both thoughtful films about burning social and political issues, he's revealed himself to be an extremely aware, sensitive, and competent storyteller. "Thappad", which stars Taapsee Pannu, is a film about male entitlement. He's already completed another film that'll release later this year, and he dives straight into his next for which he reunites with his Article 15 star Ayushmann Khurrana. CNN-News18’s #RajeevMasand met Anubhav earlier this week and we spoke about "Thappad", and how he hopes to change the mindset of both men and women. This interview first aired on CNN-News18 on February 20, 2020.

Just when Anubhav was sharing something personal about how his friends like Sudhir Mishra and Vishal Bharadwaj have inspired him, Masand interrupts and breaks his chain of thought. That is the hallmark of a bad interviewer. So pissed off. If you have too many questions, edit it later.

But that has to be of the stature and finesse of The Shining or Poltergeist or Conjuring. Then only he can claim that his step is in the right direction.

Anubhav's shift is remarkable, but his filmmaking is not. His subjects and intentions are exceptional, but his films are not - they are just above average. Don't get me wrong, but if you don't get overwhelmed by the positive bias about his exceptional intentions/subjects, you can see his average filmmaking. Take for example Article 15. The conversations between Ayushman and an unnecessary character - Ayushman's girlfriend - was such juvenile and spoonfed writing. Ayushman's performance was average - you couldn't see 'angst' and 'pain' in his performance throughout, you could only see 'discomfort'. Is that good acting? Also, he was shown to be a leader, but he doesn't seem like one anywhere in the film through his performance or body language. The film used to rise and then fall, then rise, then fall in terms of engagement. Don't you think getting so positively biased about a great subject that you call it great cinema, is a sin? It promotes mediocrity in cinema. Why can't we praise the intention/subject and criticize the film? Rajeev did that in Shubh Mangal Zyada Savdhaan, but failed in Article 15, Chhapaak (Anupama did it) et. al. Why do we just have to take complete sides?

Anubhab Sinha can be called a brave fillmaker but miles away from being called a good filmmaker. Article 15 had a great subject but fall flat because of his mediocre filmmaking. In the screenplay, he was confused whether he is making a murder mystery or political thriller. He doesn't know how to write character archs, Ayushmaan as a protagonist hardly took a stand, he was just flowing with tide. When it comes to technical aspects, his films become totally outcast. Article 15, had such random and inconsistent sound design and random change of color palate. The cinematography was heavily lifted from Alber'sto Rodríguez's Marshland but hardly made any impact as to even copy thing you have to understand filmmaking basics. If his scene-blocking was below par, his cuts & inter-cuts were laugh worthy. Even a 3 month old grad student would make better use of inter-cuts & imagery than that Sinha used in Article 15. And what made Article 15 overtly mediocre, was the telephonic conversations between Aysuhmaan & his girl friend, which he used to spoon feed the audience about the place as his camera failed to capture. As a film enthusiast, it makes me sad when such a mediocre cinema gets high critical and someone as mediocre as Sinha gets counted among Anurag Kashya, Hansal Mehta and Dibaker Banerjee.

A film is never a sum of its parts. There is something seriously flawed in your rant. Pather Panchali was a film full of technical gaffe (Ray himself admitted it) and yet what it did for the Indian cinema is beyond imagination. And, the part where you pontificate about mediocrity, etc. goes on to demonstrate what's seriously wrong with Indian cinema. In the West, many times an apparently average filmmaker has done something that belies their own body of work and the same applies to the actors from the West. And still, we like to pull easy punches.

Thappad can not generalized for all situations. Creating one hypothetical situation and painting one black or white inference on the whole intersectionality of human emotions and its play in relations is a terrible disservice to the young minds. Human relations are best understood or explored in the shades of grey. Extreme objectivity in the realm of passion, love, faith and psyche of humans is very rudimentary and base. That conscious Thappad in Kabir Singh, though a culmination of extreme human emotion and unjustified violence bordering madness, was still so real and relatable in the context that even if you change the genders in the situation it would showcase the vulnerability of soulful relations. While Taapsee's thappad may not likely be a conscious decision by that partner, howsoever both are wrong but can not be compared at a deeper level. Preeti had to judge that thappad by a man who almost went insane to be with her and was ready take on whole world for her and in that process didn't even care for his self respect in front of her family. There has to be some minimum space for redemption, reparation and forgiveness for emotional security in any relation. Even she slaps Kabir twice in the movie. Even parents slap their children. The extreme sociological narrative on relations devoid of any semblance of psychological, biological and anthropological elements is damaging young hearts.

@@javijavi33 Great. One more question. Who are good filmmakers, actors working in both bollywood and southern regional industries?
It would be interesting to see what a person with a film background thinks. Please reply.
It would help me to follow their work more closely.
