Lesson 4: How to Play Flute/Bansuri with Tanpura and balance the note 'Pa'

- In previous lessons, we discussed the basic points about flute playing like how to make sound and hold flute, how to play basic notes Sa Re Ga ma Pa Dha Ni. In this lesson we will discuss how to practice and play with Tanpura. Its very important for a classical musician to play with Tanpura, it gives the right tune and helps to harmonize the music. It also gives a mood and environment to express the core feeling of any Raga properly.
Here we discuss another point that is the note "Pa'- the fifth note. In flute, playing 'Pa' is a little bit difficult for the beginners because of the structure of flute. So give some more time with 'Pa' and it will be OK within a short time.

I had completed my first 7 lessons on a smaller flute and then purchased a G natural flute... I lost the ability to play Pa. Now i am finally able to play Pa again.... but now i am bumped down to lesson 4. Hopefully i will catch up soon.

Sir when play 'pa' closing all the holes it sounds very heavy and vibrating, if I increase pressure then it sounds very sharp and airy...please tell
May be it is about lower octave Pa and higher octave Pa. low pressure blowing is for lower octave (heavy sound) and high pressure blowing for higher octave. Both 'Pa' is necessary, Try to make the sound clear by practicing more and more. thanks.
Well you reach the pa of another scale, and the flute that you have purchased is not for that scale....If you play the first pa of your flute scale,then it would be soft...its just a matter of controlled breathing pressure and practice,you will get it

Some people raise their 1st finger when playing high Pa. But you don’t. is one better then the other? Or is it the same and a personal choice Sir??
Sir, I am learning by watching your videos. I have one question, How can I know that if My Sa is matching with Tanpura? I am beginner and confused. I am using TanpuraDroid app.
You need to know which scale of flute you are playing. Sir is playing an "E" scale flute and so he sets tanpura on "E"
Set the tanpura at the scale of your flute.

Pa is the first string of tanpura remaining 3 are Sa only. Also may be because these are shuddh swaras

Sir, when I try PA then at first time it play. But after that clear PA doesn't come, hissing or some other noise is coming instead. Guide me please.

I had some local flute in different scales..I couldn't play' 'Pa'.I thought it was problem of flute and got one standard flute' Punam c natural '..but l faced the same problem there also...then I understood that was not the flute problem,problem is mine..lack of practice..😂😂😂

Sorry for the late reply. Our Guruji is a very generous person, and the effort for a tuned flute is huge. If some one learn it passionately, he never argue about the price. First practice with any flute u have( it is not so much difficult) in the meantime u can contact with him, he will consider ur request we hope, do not loose hope and practice more and more. Thanks.
