T-55 - Tank History and Review

- The T-34 was a massive leap forward in Soviet tank design, setting the mold for how Soviet medium tanks would be created for decades to come. The effort to replace the T-34 would eventually result in the T-44 medium tank, which was not quite as groundbreaking as its predecessor. In an effort to produce a better medium tank for Soviet armored forces, the T-54 would emerge as essentially a heavily modified and improved T-44. The T-54 / T-55 would go on to become the most produced tank in history.

Great Video as always
Hey spook what are your thoughts on tc endwars tank and if you haven’t seen them would you take a look? I think it make a great video

I love the T-54/55. It just emits that "Cold War tank" feeling for me.
Early cold war vehicles have this weird look to them. I really like it. Things like the T-55, the Centurion, the IL-28, and the F-104 have it.
Same feeling
F104 is the best airplane design on my opinion

I always love how compact the videos are on this channel, lots of the most important information in a relatively short time ^^
agreed ;)
I have a small request , could you also do reviews for tanks that were made as an incremental updates to these legacy tanks ? Heard developing countries have done wonders with these cold war era tanks
China has bitten the crazy hamburger and tried to modernize an export version of this thing. Not sure if it's any good or not, but it certainly is unique looking.
The Israeli M-51 comes to mind.
There's only so much you can really do. The more modern gear you install inside, the less room the crew has. Keep in mind the crew compartment on these tanks is already extremely cramped. The USSR had a height limit of 5' 6" for their tankers.
They were great tanks in their day, but their time has come and gone, especially considering how prevalent RPG's and similar anti tank weapons are. Up armouring them again can only go so far. I say this as a diehard fan of the T-54/55, such a good looking vehicle.
@@B52Stratofortress1 That's where the fun is in observing these machines being pushed to their limits.
As a tank industry veteran, trained for Soviet tanks, I find your analyses more accurate and informative than many other " experts' " here on YT from certain museums are. Very good job, keep up the good work. Concise, short, to the point, no time hogging, I just invented the term :D Excuse my bad English.
Dude we need the m55, a Slovenian t55 with a 105mm smoothbore, era and thermals. We also need the T55AD, and T55MV, as you can tell i love the t55.
The t55AD would be great to be a test bed for active protection as it was the first tank to ever use it and could only protect against slow atgms making it not op in game.
The T55MV would be great to add as its basically the T55AM-1 but without the composite armor. It just has gen 1 ERA blocks that only protects against heatfs and atgms giving people another option who don't want to pay for a premium modernised T55.
The m55 should be a premium to help pay for the other t55s added to the game. The M55 is a 2000s modernised Slovenian T55 with a 105mm smoothbore L7 cannon, era, laser warning systems and thermals. Its basically a glass cannon that could be added to 8.7 helping russia face against all the damn leos at 9.0. It also wouldn't be hard to add as the Chinese premium at 8.7 the t69 would pretty much be exactly the same
You do realize we have a T-90A ingame... right? Along with Shtora Active Protection System that works

Thank you for the small history video. It was well done and I really enjoyed it
Yes! Please more of these reviews and history of tanks.
IIRC there were also weird problems with the T-44 and how well, or not well, the hull armor was welded together. I remember seeing this on the WOT forums back in like 2011 or 2012 and I haven't been able to find it since, but someone posted pictures of T-44's used as live fire targets for 122mm guns [either an IS-2 or ISU-122S] and the T-44's looked like they got hit by nuclear bombs. All the welds holding the armor plates together failed and the whole vehicles fell apart like a cartoon car.
Wrong. Up to "aht-aht" - the 8,8 cm gun of Nashorn.
The articles didn't mention 122mm at all.

T-55 was the last user focused tank made by the USSR. All following Soviet tanks were loose collections of Engineer developed specifications that while looking good on paper, were basically just targets, due to fightability or "soft" issues.
Wish you continued on to talk about where the tank served in combat & it’s effectiveness in those arenas.
Is this a new series??!! Amazing!!!
Fun fact some later t55s in the event of a nearby nuclear explosion, the tank will automatically slam its hatches shut. There's a place where I live where if you have enough money you can drive tanks. A T-55 was one of them. (I didn't get to drive it but I did get to drive a Sherman)
I need a location this sounds like fun

this is something we've all been waiting for, still the amazing quality as always.
I love your videos btw and i respect your blunt honesty with the issues in war thunder, however.. You made an entire video about the T55 and its success and didn't mention once that it's even featured in the James bond film goldeneye lmao
nice
I preffer the T55 someone made in Arma 3 over the War thunder model, Idk it's just more simple but it looks better
Is it the GM variants?
You should make more video like this on other tank as well
Knowing that the M4 Sherman had a hand in the making of the T-54/T-55 is not only super ironic (considering it’s A) an American tank, and B) we used Soviet titanium to make the SR-71 Blackbird), but also kinda cool. It’s nice to know that the Sherman had such an impact on later tank designs, an impact that can still be felt today.
The Soviets loved the Shermans that they received. But it isn't often heard about these days. That sort of thing wasn't good for cold war politics.
@@B52Stratofortress1 There were different opinions about Шерман. But the point of collision of all opinions are leather seats - everyone liked it. Although, solider took the leather away "due to need to make boots"
i had three of them on my sights and ranged back at 2012, but didn't have the green light to light them up. when they realized we were there though they hid themselves, they know they are not a match for Merkava mark 4s.

Russia got a t 55, stretched it, and shoved a bigger gun in it
I’ve seen t 44 in pictures in Lebanon. Funny fact, they still wanted to use it...
an armored platform-carrier of 100 mm gun is .... an armored platform-carrier of 100 mm gun.
Oh no.... Spook is starting to go more in depth with the history of tanks... Now all I've got for unique talking points is service history. THANKS SPOOK (jk ily and your videos 10/10)
No transmission problems ? Who are you and where is the real Spookston
There is no transmission problems because soviet engineering is superior... reliable...
the T-44 had massive transmission problems
the t-54 mod. 1949 and fowards had a good transmission that got ported to the t-44m in 1961 but by that time the t-44 was obsolete
@@kajmak64bit76 It is supposed to be funny. Isn't it? I think that the latter option is valid.

Arguably the best thing about the T-55 is the possibility of taking it as a 25pt recon tank

t55 is honestly one of the coolest looking tanks ngl
You seems to exclude the economic side of tanks. T-34, aside for all its good and bad traits, was extremely cheap and easy to produce.
Also, T-44 didn't enter production because of an abundance of T-34s. It wasn't compelling to produce a new, entirely different tank at the end of the war.
This is the first time I was this early
I love this tank is so beautiful
Some might not be obsessed with military aircraft and tank history, but I sure am! I think it’s healthy specifically because it’s allowed me to be such a more aware person of the present, let me explain. Years ago I was extremely up close with the F-117 Nighthawk evolution into the craft it is today which is a air/spacecraft that has no tail or wings, it has a teardrop shaped body and uses electromagneticgravitic propulsion, I’ve also been up close with the triangle shaped anti gravity craft using the same type of propulsion system, you can actually google that one “triangle spacecraft patent” to see more yourself. And that was around 15 years ago now, they’ve been around for awhile, we’ve been lied to for far too long. My grandfather was also a fighter pilot in the Korean War, so I’ve always been following both publicly aerospace technological developments over the years as well as the black world. So I study it all, both the technologies we used back then and even now on the surface of the planet, and also try as much as possible to peer more into the shadowy true world of military technology which is so far past what people think is possible that if people heard what the military has they would think you’re talking science fiction technology. Nope, if you can imagine it from Star Wars or Star Trek they’ve got that tech or even better than what has been portrayed through sci fi films underneath the desert and off planet. That’s a fact, I can promise you.
sir this is a Wendy's...
Get better soon Spook.
Hay spookston, any idea why the t-54's turret drive is sooo slow compared to the previous t-34/44's?
hmm it doesnt seen that way but i heard that they limited it so that the eletric drive wouldnt make the gunner controls for turning the turret spin too quickly or such
I like to fantasize that all these cool incremental tanks got used or were developed earlier. I thought the T-43 in WoT was pretty good after the 100mm gun was dropped in favor of the improved 85mm gun. It has good enough soft stats to handle the 85mm well. If they had the resources to just switch production over and start making the T-43, it was an easy Panther equivalent. Imagine if instead of T-34-85s they had started producing T-43s or T-44s instead.
Likewise the American T32 was far beefier than the Pershing that eventually came out of the program. It even had a gun more similar to the Super Pershing's very long 90mm instead of the base M3 90mm. We had actually decided to adopt and manufacture the T32 but the shipping weight and logistics to get it overseas ended up being a big issue. So we lopped a set of road wheels off and lightened up the armor. The Pershing, and the subsequent Patton series that followed, were a compromised design. Imagine a T32 based M46 Patton. Suddenly not quite as outclassed by the T-54/55.
Likewise the T29 and its many brothers were all built and thoroughly tested. They performed well, had good armor and armament for the time. Not quite a King Tiger equivalent but easily a capable Tiger Hunter. With a solid 105mm they would be a threat to a T-54.
I drive by a captured T55 every day
Yo is that vangelis in the background?
In short summary T55 good

I wish the T-54 Prototype and T-54A were actually in the game
Technically the T-54A is in a fashion. The Type 59 in the Chinese tree is a copy of the T-54A built off of Soviet supplied blueprints. The quality control apparently sucked, though.
We just aren't gonna talk about the TOW aps in the beginning?

My favorite tank

Would love to See the m48 in this series and compare it to the t54/55
i mean it weighted like 45 tons while the t-54 36 only
basically a medium x heavy tank
I believe the T55 was better overall, but again we can't know for sure, many people bring up the arab-israeli conflicts just to say that soviet tanks were bad, but it really is a superficial analysis, arab tankers were just random dudes that had little to no experience and often did not even maintain their tanks, they did not use the good mobility of those machines since they mostly just hulled them down in place, and to top it off, they ignored all the great plans the soviets wrote for them that could've made them wim those wars, thus being absolutely shredded by a better trained and more economically supported army.
