Donizetti, Maria Padilla - Act I, ''Lieto fra voi ritorno''

Maria Padilla is an opera, in three acts by Gaetano Donizetti. Gaetano Rossi and the composer wrote the Italian libretto. The plot is loosely based on the historical figure María de Padilla, the mistress of Pedro the Cruel, King of Castile. It premiered on 26 December 1841 at La Scala, Milan.
In its debut season, María Padilla was successful, performing for 24 consecutive evenings. But this fortune was short-lived, since soon the debutant Giuseppe Verdi eclipsed the rest of the composers with his Nabucco.
Synopsis
María, daughter of Don Ruiz de Padilla, becomes the lover of the king of Castile, Pedro. The offended father seeks to avenge his daughter's honor in every possible way, but is arrested and humiliated. Mary, upon learning of her father's sudden dishonor, flees the court and cares for her father, who in the meantime has been driven mad by the dishonour. But when he learns of Pedro's new wedding to the princess of Burgundy, Blanca, he goes to meet the royal procession and snatches the crown from the princess. Peter is upset and declares that Mary is the only queen of his heart. The joy is excessive for María, who dies surrounded by her loved ones.
Maria Padilla es una ópera en tres actos con música de Gaetano Donizetti y libreto en italiano de Gaetano Rossi, basada libremente en la figura histórica de María de Padilla, amante y luego esposa de Pedro I de Castilla. Se estrenó con éxito en el Teatro de La Scala de Milán el 26 de diciembre de 1841.
En la temporada de su estreno, Maria Padilla tuvo éxito, representándose durante 24 tardes consecutivas. Pero esta fortuna fue efímera, dado que al poco el debutante Giuseppe Verdi eclipsó con su Nabucco al resto de compositores.
Sinopsis
María, hija de Don Ruiz de Padilla, se convierte en amante del rey de Castilla, Pedro. El padre ofendido busca vengar el honor de su hija de todos los modos posibles, pero es arrestado y humillado. María, al conocer el súbito deshonor de su padre, huye de la corte y cuida del padre, que mientras tanto ha enloquecido por el deshonor. Pero cuando conoce las nuevas bodas de Pedro con la princesa de Borgoña, Blanca, va al encuentro del cortejo real y arrebata la corona a la princesa. Pedro está disgustado, y declara que María es la única reina de su corazón. La alegría es excesiva para María, que muere rodeada por sus seres queridos.
