I'm so glad I found your channel!! Last year, my squashes kept forming and dying and I couldn't figure out how to help them. I don't get too many bees around my house so this is super helpful to know how to hand pollinate.
Surprise, AZ here! My young daughter and I enjoyed watching a couple of your episodes. Looking forward to seeing your new ones!
Love your playlist
This is going to be my first garden in the Summer and my first garden in full sun. So I am a little anxious about it.
Angela, thank you. You are absolutely the best CZcams resource I know of to help me learn how to grow in the desert heat of Southern Nevada. This is my second summer growing and I'm finally having some success.
Good luck!
Hello from Houston! In addition to the ones you mentioned, perpetual spinach laughs at high temps (it did great in 100-110f summer and also in an 18F cold snap (covered). It is also very tasty; I use it to substitute for celery and spinach. Egyptian and Longevity spinach also like the heat.
I grew a bunch of determinate tomatoes this year to get a big harvest before we hit triple digits.
Thanks! Yes, I've grown those before but it's been a while. I need to add them back to my garden. Thank you!
Please, where do I order Perpetual Spinach seeds?
Thank you.
I really appreciate this video and your channel. I’m in Central Texas and we get similar summers. Historically, we couldn’t keep anything alive, and our community talks about a lot of “over summering” tactics. Because of these tips, we can garden year round now.
Never considered not fertilizing when it’s too hot. I thought I was doing something wrong when tomatoes or peppers were not producing central California.
Thanks Angela. It looks like our 90s are going to start tomorrow with no end in sight in my zone 8a New Mexico location. Looks like we are in for a long hot season. Your tips are incredibly helpful to me and help me to make the best of it. I hope your summer is milder than last year.
Thanks! I hope so too!
Thank you so much, Angela. I am having such a burn out right now with the garden. Pest , pill bugs & ants, and ease of watering are taking my hopes away. I will still fight with all the wonderful information you provide. Thank you for always giving me light during the summer gardening in AZ.
Such a great video! Lovely filming and amazing advice and information for hot season growing! I especially needed to hear that it’s not going to look as beautiful and perfect! I get all stressed out every year when the heat comes and things seem to stop growing or producing or even start dying. Thank you for such great practical tips-I need wood chips! Luckily we hav got the 90s yet here in central California but it will be coming soon! I’m so happy to have fouuyiur channel and can’t wait to watch more videos! Happy growing.
Your video is spot on for gardening in Arizona! Thank you for sharing!❤
Hi Angela, I'm a new subscriber from Ajo, you neighbor to the south. Enjoyed your video and information very much. Looking forward to learning more from you. Cheers!
This year I'm going to set up a water system where I get the waste water from cleaning off veggies and fruit and then I'll dump that into my wicking beds. And then I'll take the water from the wicking bed to water other parts of my garden (I'm on a hill so I have an upper garden and a lower garden). With about 6 people in the house all the time that will add up to a lot of water!
Awesome! Thanks Angela, your videos are so helpful to me and my garden.
From Mesa too! Your tips are always the best for our heat and direct sunlight.
Thank you! You're a lifesaver! Hello from Gilbert!
I live in TX and keep trying to grow tomatoes. It's too cool for them in the spring and too hot for them in the summer. So I try to keep them alive for a fall harvest. I've had better luck with cherry tomatoes than anything else. This spring has been wonderful with cooler temps and lots of rain. I actually have some Early Girls with tomatoes this year.
Thank you for the encouragement, ANGELA! I love the season change and will be going with the flow!
Taking note and not planting my small container garden until the fall. I think I’m over watering. It’s been in the 70s up to 80 in zone 9b. I water every day. I think I’ll scale back to every other! I’ll get some fertilizer in my beds next week. Then mulch. Good tips!
So timely - thank you!
i live in arcadia lite…just found you. i cant wait to watch how to survive the summers!
Thank you, Angela. This was truly, truly helpful!! I garden in Tucson.😊
Wonderful tips. Great for my sunny Florida weather too.
New to the channel. Loved your video!
Thank you and happy gardening.
I always enjoy your videos! Thks.
Ahna. Atlanta Ga.
Hello, have you found Anazai Beans yet? They are wonderful and amazing flavor! Enjoy your video.
No. I haven't tried them. Where do you get your seeds? I'd love to get some planted.
@GrowingInTheGarden you can find them on line. I bought from a small farm in AZ on a trip. They come from a discovery in AZ in pottery, I believe. I was successful in growing them. But now full time RV. Goodluck.
With your help maybe I will have better luck during the summer. I know now I have to move some of my plants under shade.
Thanks for all your tips. The information is spot on, as we live just south of Mesa Gateway IWA.
Very informative! Really enjoyed the squash lesson. Here in the south of Brazil we have cold weather, but also hot summers! On those ocasions, for me at least, it´s downtime, since it´s not so pleasant to be in the garden. Tks for the tips!
THANK YOU ! GOD BLESS YOU 🙌 ❤
Greetings from Ireland, Great video, Its the bees knees. We could do with a bit of sun over here Its been cloudy and cool for the last two weeks.
Your garden looks great!
Thank you so much for a very helpful tips.
One of your best videos. Applies to other locations. In southern New Mexico just put some 40% shade cloth over some tomatoes yesterday even though it’s not 100 yet. I use 8 foot T-post to attach my shade cloths. I’ll remember about the no fertilizing over 100. I’ll have to rewatch and take notes.
This is giving me motivation to not abandon ship this summer, after many years I still haven't found the right watering/soil combo my plants always seem dry but the deeper soil super wet!--in south phx hoping for a tolerable summer!
Best of luck!
Yes some days it does seem impossible. It's the tomatoes I every year I say I'm not going to grow tomatoes anymore and every year I try started them real early figuring that by the time the heat comes I would have already gotten a bunch of tomatoes and guess what nope. Starting them early just had them growing very slowly cuz the sun is so low then they start to make tomatoes right now when it's way too hot and the leaves are curling so I rigged up some poles gave them shade but at this point just not worth growing tomatoes I'll stick with the other things. Other things I mean kale in the winter salad in the winter pigeon peas Scarlet runner beans are doing great My green grapes are doing great I'll just stick with that stuff
I've had the best luck with monsoon planted tomatoes. I plant them mid July or early August and get an excellent fall/winter harvest. Spring ones don't do as well for me either. I'm glad to hear the other things have been successful for you.
@@GrowingInTheGarden I have saved some heat resistant tomato seeds that I didn't plant and I'll give that a try I'll try planting them. I'm not from Arizona so this is so new to me and I'm trying to learn how to garden in the desert and your CZcams channel has been so helpful. I'll try the monsoon planting I'm also going to plant some tepary black beans in July and see how they do
I started growing a dwarf tomato inside under grow lights called, Tiny Tim. I don't have to deal with the Oklahoma heat or dreaded hornworms and I have 🍅 for salads and ssnacking. I do have them outside as are temps are pleasant now, but they'll be back inside soon. I can have tomatoes and lettuce year round by growing inside.
@@darrylgrimaldi5101 sounds like a great idea
I AGREE …. For me it’s always HOT… the only variation I have is VERY WET OR VERY DRY!! I am currently trying grow tomatoes but every day I want to cut all the plants I have out no grow something else …. Talk about stress to get a 🍅
San Antonio grower here. One thing I struggle with is the dichotomy of mulch. Yes, absolutely our soil wouldn’t survive without it, however, I feel like it works against me at the same time. It almost works as a sponge and prevents water from getting to the soil. We will get a half inch or so of rain and I feel like the places that have mulch don’t receive any of the benefit from the lighter rains. Same with my drip irrigation. I have to water for a VERY long time for it to penetrate through the mulch and get to the soil.
I've been putting my drips under my mulch and that helps. We don't get a lot of summer rain. You may need to experiment and find a happy medium depending on your needs and what works for your garden.
Thanks for the tips. In 9b with dry and hot summers esp for the months of July Ang August of 100s; still cooler than AZ🙂
Thanks ❤
You are clear and concise❤
Great info
Thank you
Excellent info
I love the advice you give for us zone 9-10 desert dwellers. I'm attempting to adjust timing of indoor seed starting for different flowers throughout our seasons. Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated! Keep up the great content.
My flower calendar could help. It has planting and seed starting dates: growinginthegarden.bigcartel.com/product/perpetual-annual-flower-planting-calendar
I live in mesa as well 🙌🙌🙌
I’m so sad I didn’t watch this until now…I just harvested my dill (bummer)it was full of ladybugs (Gilbert, AZ)
It's ok! It will be time to plant dill again this fall.
Thank you for this information. I made the mistake of planting sunflowers in my beds ooops! Time to put to practical use what I learned today. One reason I continue to watch and learn from you, besides your knowledge and teaching style is, I live in Northwest Phoenix, so we pretty much fact the same weather conditions.
Hi Angela, my struggles are aphids. This property has more aphids that I cannot get rid of! They cut my harvest of everything I grow! They attack the blossoms on my fruit more than leaves. Always learning! I have beneficial insects but never enough. I’m on my fourth year of growing in La Quinta Ca. Palm Springs area. Love a challenge! Thanks for sharing your knowledge. I’ve learned so much from you!

Hi Angala my summers in bc Canada get really hot, should I mulch my onions
Great video Angela! I need help with corn. I can't get them to grow tall and they tassel too soon. My bet is inconsistent watering. Help! I am in Phoenix
That's a common problem. Corn can be tough to grow well here. Start it as early as you can, or try a monsoon planting.
Taking notes 📝 and re-watching. What is the warm temperature range and the hot temp range? I’m in Peoria AZ.
I used 30% shade cloth last year and even the cactus fried, so maybe a heavier shade this year?
I’m also wondering about adding compost - it’s almost ready but I realized I didn’t know how to add it to the containers with plants already in them. Spread on the top? Pull out some of the top soil and mix in?
Thanks so much for your great videos and shorts - they’re organized and easy to understand. Fingers crossed for a milder summer this year!!
Pull back the mulch and add compost on top of the soil. No need to mix it in. Hot is once we are over 100°F - Crossing my fingers (but not holding my breath) for a milder summer too!
@@GrowingInTheGarden Thank you!!
My luffas got super bitter last year during the summer. My guess is I over fertilized them stressing them out so I will try not fertilizing during the summer to see how they do.
Good afternoon are you able to send me a video of starting a water grid please
czcams.com/video/GXMsLnxkOEU/video.html or czcams.com/video/X3T4-2gcOUA/video.html
Thank you for all your inspiration
Do you mulch over the top of your watering grids?
This year, thats what I'm doing.
Thank you, Angela! Please, when do you plant your onions out? I am zone 9b, and mine always bolt!
Usually November growinginthegarden.com/how-to-grow-onions-10-tips-for-growing-onions/
Thank you!
Buckeye here! really thought i couldnt grow in the summer, but your video explains how to endure and thats so amazing. ive started small and slowly adding so all this info is encouraging. is there anything to do for the hard water? i am going to use solar irrigates and wondered if there is anything i should add to the water source? thank you.
If the water is very hard you could add a filter.
Hello Angela do you start your basil by seeds?
Your garden pretty amazing. Thank you for sharing.
Yes. Usually I start them indoors from seed and plant them outside when they have several sets of leaves.
when do you plant onions and potatoes and how long does it take them to come to full growth. I am the west valley.
Enjoyed the visit.
Can you use cypress mulch in the garden
Yes. It just takes longer than most hardwood mulch to break down, which makes it perfect for paths.
Sure.
Great video! I have a question about sunflowers in the garden. I’ve been seeing different people say not to plant sunflowers close to other flowers and veggies because they throw off something that can stunt the growth of the plants that surround them. Have you noticed any of that around your sunflowers? Thanks!
I keep them outside of the beds because they take up so much room/nutrients etc. Haven't experienced the allelopathic effects too much however.
This is so helpful Angela, my garden in central CA is similar to your summer temps. Dry and very hot! Well hot to me. I wish I had all the green plants and shade that you have in your yard. MY neighbors have been very upset since I planted a fig tree, because eventually they MAY be impacted by its presence. Ugh. How do you cope with neighbors?
I love my neighbors. Don't love their huge ficus trees 🤦🏻♀️
Ahh.. so don’t plant? Keep the tree small? What would help?
I really struggle with the look of shade cloth. I’m drawn to the garden because of how beautiful it is. Putting up my janky shade cloth really bothers me on a deep level. I need to get past this if I want to garden in my harsh climate.
I know what you mean. But hopefully the plants will look better and that will make it easier. Here's are some ideas about ways to add shade: growinginthegarden.com/how-to-create-shade-in-the-garden/
👌👍
I'm a bit north by Prescott. Just wondering where you get your mulch. Any special kind?
I use the wood chip mulch from Arizona Worm Farm.
What type of soil do you use and where did you buy them. I live in Mesa also.
I use the raised bed mix from Arizona Worm Farm
Ive would love to know your opinion on feeding roses in the summer. I know that this is a huge debate amony rosarians.
Definitely not a rose expert, but I'm on team don't fertilize. Summers are stressful for roses here. I don't want to add to it.
Thank you for this timely reminder. The last few summers here in Phx have really stressed me out and this next summer is predicted to be more of the same. We just put up our shade cloth structures, time to get the shade cloth up too. Thank you Angela.
Nice sharing my friend

Where do you get your mulch?
I use the wood chip mulch from Arizona Worm Farm
All my beans have spider mites should I pull them out and replant?
Probably if they are overtaken.
What do you use for mulch?
Wood chip mulch from Arizona Worm Farm
I learned so much from this video as a new gardener in zone 9b … Thank you so much!❤🪴🙌🏾💯

I'm looking for a shade cloth for one shrub (2ft x 2ft bottlebrush) that gets beat up in summer. Any recommendations?
This is the shade cloth I use: amzn.to/3P4nfYW You may consider moving it to a new location in the fall if it struggles every summer.
Yes I will move it in the fall. thank you
I didn’t want anything so big for one little shrub. It’s would be too obtrusive in my front yard.
Grasshopper are everywhere in Mesa. 🥴 how do i get rid of them or defend against them.
Birds are a natural predator. Hopefully we will have some fat, happy birds!
Do you produce your own mulch?
No I get it from Arizona worm farm
Do you have a local source for Roselle? I’m at Gilbert/Ray Rd in Gilbert…
AZ Worm Farm and Greenlife Nursery have starts.
I was going to say Arizona Worm Farm as well.
Summer Winds Nursery also has Roselle.
I’m having a hard time with ants right now. I’m also in Mesa. Do you, or anyone, have any tips to help with this?
If they are causing isues - not just present and not doing harm, you can try these: amzn.to/3WRXXSO
So now that the temperatures are rising, my bush beans seem to be done for this season. Do I pull the plants and start over with new seeds for a fall garden? Or do I keep watering the plants through the summer and protect them from the heat? Will they produce again or once a plant is done, it’s done? And I have lots of tomatoes on the vine but they never seem to ripen before the harsh heat. I have only gotten two off the vine. Same question. Do I let the plants go dormant for the summer or do I pull them and start with new ones after summer?
Plant new beans. See how the tomatoes do, they may take off again in the fall, you have to wait and see. You can bring tomatoes in to ripen: growinginthegarden.com/turning-green-tomatoes-red-4-ways-to-ripen-green-tomatoes/
Surprise, AZ here! My young daughter and I enjoyed watching a couple of your episodes. Looking forward to seeing your new ones!
