  • Hello and merry Christmas everyone! I thought I'd save this adventure for the festive season!
    Back in November I had the most incredible opportunity to head over to Canada, out onto the sea ice of Hudson Bay to walk alongside Polar bears! As you can imagine this was rather a dream trip for me, the Polar bear having been a subject of my ambitions for more than two decades, it was fantastic to get out and see these rather incredible mammals the year I turned 30!
    For the trip I worked alongside Churchill Wild with support from Travel Manitoba, staying at the Dymond Lake Ecolodge, one of three remote ecolodges on the Hudson Bay operated by the Churchill Wild team. From the lodge we headed out on guided walks to catch up with the bears, who are waiting for the seas Ice to form, so they can head out and hunt. The unique nature of the Churchill Wild experience is to get out foot and see Polar bears without the crowds! For more information about the trip they offer be sure to check the website! churchillwild.com
    ...And if you are interested in coming to see them with me on a photography tour, be sure to sign up to my email news letter for future tour information. subscribepage....
    I really hope you enjoy the video and the images created out on the ice. I really enjoyed working in Black and White on this trip, aiming to make a portfolio that was a little different. It was certainly an adventure and I cannot wait to get back to Churchill!
    I throughly enjoyed making this video and it was with help from great partners in Churchill Wild, alongside Travel Manitoba www.travelmani... and VIA Rail Canada www.viarail.ca that it was all possible. If you are interested in learning more about the region the Travel Manitoba website is a great resource for planning your trip and if like us you would like to travel overland ( on what has to be the one of the best rail journeys around) the VIA Rail Canadian is a superb pick!
    Of course if you have any questions about the trip, images, gear or anything wildlife photography related be sure to ask me down in the comments and subscribe for future videos! Of course a like is always handy to help this get recommended to others!

    Look forward to seeing you in the next video!

    I've been to Churchill in 2017 and saw the bears myself Amazing with a capital A. Your heart rate probably also increased when you saw the first one? Mine did.
    We took de train from Winnipeg to Churchill and flew back after the trip. Thanks for sharing!

    Things have definitely changed from the last time i was in Churchill, that being back in 1981 when I was working in the NWT for Pacific Western Airlines. As a wildlife photographer, the video makes me want to go back.Thanks for taking us along, wonderful images.

    Great work. How did having the gear you wanted or needed work (Z9 + 600 + tripod)? Luggage on the smaller planes and kit on walking safaris?

    • @TomMasonPhoto
      @TomMasonPhoto  Před 8 měsíci

      My Z9 / 600 f4 Z + (Z8/300mm/24-120mm/35mm) was all put in my Lowepro whistler 450 (I’ve modified by taking out the hard plastic inserts to allow more gear to fit inside) my Gitzo is the smaller 4 series that has 5 sections allowing for it to easily fit in my hold luggage)

      @@nikon_z9_images so I’m going to be putting a gear video out next week with the info about how I carried all my gear if that’s something they will be interesting? 😉 I carried two cameras, out and ready to shoot, tripod over my shoulder with the 600mm and Z9 mounted!

    14:40 Do you have a custom button set as "action seetings"?
    (Example: 2500th, F4, ISO Auto)
    To have the back up, if you use a slow shutter speed for showing motion and then some important action happens.

    • @TomMasonPhoto
      @TomMasonPhoto  Před 8 měsíci +1

      Personally I haven’t set that up on my camera (although I am planning to trial it this winter) I’ve always just worked in the way that I’m working on a certain type of image then quickly shift my settings (only takes me a few seconds) but yeah I think I need to take advantage of the more customisable options on my Z9/8 and if I’m honest I’m still honing in on the AF modes I prefer for various situations/Subjects! I wonder if how I end up with my camera setup for 2024 might be something you guys are interested in?
      Cheers and happy Xmas! Tom

    When you say your a Professional Tog .
    Do you mean the number of years using gear
    Or do you work for a noted Publication or freelance or selff employed doing weddings etc
    Can you clarify please

    • @TomMasonPhoto
      @TomMasonPhoto  Před 8 měsíci +1

      I’ve been professional and freelance since I was 20, worked for multiple publications with stories articles, sold images through libraries, worked for tourist boards, NGOs and corporate clients. Wildlife photography has been my sole source of income for more than a decade - I’ve been taking images using gear since I was 11!

    Sounds like an amazing trip, but too rich for my blood. I took a look at Churchill Wild's website and was shocked how expensive it is to do just a few days with them. I'm sure its necessary to charge that much due to the remote nature of their resort, but man, I could do a dozen or more other trips to also spectacular and cool places for the cost of a trip up there. Just too rich for my blood.

    • @TomMasonPhoto
      @TomMasonPhoto  Před 8 měsíci +1

      The trips are in the expensive end of the market but due to the remoteness and infrastructure costs they allow you to have unique experiences that really do give you polar bears without the crowds, also the ability to work from the ground, using my tripod and having the ability to stand and shoot not from a vehicle is rather wonderful, but I do understand it’s out of the price range for many!
