I think she done blowed up, bud. Hear how uneven the cranking is? The blowby out the valve cover is a tell-tale sign. Usually they lift a head and the coolant goes bye bye. Or, they just overheat on their own. GM did a major revision on the cooling system at one point with dual thermostats in an attempt to improve things, but the writing was on the wall for those things. Today, there are two versions of the 6.5TD...running and burnt up. If it isn't running, it's probably burnt up. I HOPE it actually does run. The yellow on the flares is the plastic they are made out of.

I appreciate all the info. I haven't even had time to mess with it again.
If you're going to use anything to try and start a 6.5 diesel you need to use either and spray it well turning the engine over yes yes I know people will lose their mind but I've been using the stuff for years and have yet to blow an engine up as long as you don't keep spraying it once it starts you'll be fine
If it don't sell in couple weeks. I might order a starter and some glow plugs and give her another shot. I will definitely try that of we pull her back in. Appreciate the tip!
Can use either in a stubborn engine especially if the glow plugs are not working properly or the intake grid heater is dead. Watched this at a school bus 🚌 center when I lived in Massachusetts. 😊
Two more batteries and a couple more spare starters wouldn't hurt either.
At least that's how we start them in the Northwoods of Wisconsin anyways
Put a 5/8's socket on the bolt on the pulley for the tensioner, then reef on it counter clock wise. that will move the tensioner so you can slip the belt on
We did try that. It kept loosening the bolt that held pulley on weird enough.
@@SquareMax That's pretty odd, I'll have to check mine but I think the bold is left hand thread, so right loose lefty tighty. I know on my 454 the tensioner is just a 3/8 square drive. Keep up the good content, looking forward to see you grow
@mylifeisgutitarhero2
I appreciate it man. I'll have to double check myself, my memory is a little fuzzy at times. I could definitely be mistaken
Not the "Cosby sauce" that bugs me, as much as the friggin' flip flops on a man in a shop!
I know what you mean. I tried going barefoot! Just got one to many metal splinters.
Keep up the videos man! Your channel can go a long way!
I appreciate that man. Glad you enjoyed
I think you need to reconnect the air intake so the engine can utilize the air flow sensors to get it to start. Noticed that isnt hooked up
😊
That is why you have the kitty 😺 in there. He is looking for a fresh meal i.e a live mouse 🐁 😊😊😊😊

You younger guys need to realize that back in the day, there were no 500hp factory diesel engines. People towed with smogger gas V8 engines with steep gears and got there slowly and with a big gas bill. Nobody in this country produced a light-duty diesel engine suitable to go in a truck. Chrysler tried installing Perkins diesel engines in some trucks for about a year, but they were severely underpowered and not accepted by the public. Next, GM decided to take the excellent Oldsmobile 350 gas V8 and recast the block for conversion to a diesel. Some ding-dongs that don't know what they are talking about claim it's the same block..it isn't. Those 350 diesel engines weren't terrible, but the fuel of the day was dirty and the engines had inadequate fuel filtration, so they had numerous issues with injection pumps. Plus, it was underpowered. They got a partially-undeserved reputation for unreliability and that was that.
Next, GM Detroit developed the 6.2L naturally aspirated engine, which was a big step up from the 5.7L, but still under-engineered. Detroit Diesel incorrectly assumed that fuel economy was the chief concern and didn't anticipate the future market for diesels that could be worked hard and hold together. The 6.5L Turbo diesel version brought out the weak points that were masked by the low horsepower of the 6.2L NA version. When people tried to work a 6.5TD like they did a 7.3 IDI or Cummins, with their foot to the floor for miles uphill, they gave up. The bottom end was too weak and they generated more heat than the cooling system could remove. I feel like detroit Diesel lost their way when they went to 4-cycle V8 diesels. They also had a 8.2L "fuel pincher" medium-duty V8 that was also known for problems.
This is a nice truck and I think it's worthy of having whatever engine issues it may have repaired. Just don't expect it to be an HD engine...it is not. It'll start, smell and run like a diesel with the power level of a gas small-block and that is all it will do...reliably.
Aww heck yeah tech them young kids are the future flammable carburetor cleaner works every time I think there a way you can heat up the pugs alone then hit the motor with it I liked those trucks but the color gotta be a gray or something
I'm not a big red fan either. I think they look sharp but not my flavor
❤🎉
The 6.5 is no duramax but they are fun to drive with a few mods. Other than my two 2500hd Lbz’s I have a 94 k3500 with the 6.5 they can be a pain in the ass. When I bought mine it sat for ten plus years those trucks have a oil pressure sensor that is wired through the lift pump which go and won’t turn on the lift pump the Ds4 injection pump has a hard time pulling fuel on it’s own without the lift pump working which won’t fill up the fuel filter housing. Easy way I found to get a 6.5 going quick is buy a cheap electric fuel pump of Amazon they used to be 12$ probably went up now like everything. I use either a gallon jug or something bigger tap into the fuel filter housing lines one feed one return with fuel line the whole housing unbolt’s with two bolts to make it easier. Power up the pump bleed out the housing at the top and it should start. If the PDM, (pump driver module) the black box on the injection pump is shot the truck won’t start, warm weather it will go without the glow plugs working. If the GPR is not working properly it can be jumped with an open end wrench if desired by touching the two contacts on the GPR together.
I appreciate all the info. The lift pump is working with key on. Pumps up good. Blead lines to injector. I burnt the poor old starter up.
Heat up the glow plugs with heatgun
We might get back to it. If it don't sell after i do a few other projects.
Square max Customs 98 Chevrolet Silverado 2500 4x4 long Bed Red Truck 6.5 Detroit Diesel do mods to it Man?????
That's is a option. I just don't want to dump a bunch of money into it. Have a crew cab short bed 2000 k2500 (same body style as red truck) that I'm currently 6.6 LB7 Duramax swapping.

I don't know man. That's 550 miles and your in the rust belt! I do appreciate it tho.
It's not rusty I mean needs cab corners but that's it floors, bed, frame all solid I'm on the GA line in NC so rust isn't really bad around here
@@SquareMaxThat us definitely not the Rust Belt. Come to Upper Michigan if you want rust! Can show you many examples of serious rust 😮😮😂😂😂😂😂

I lived in NY (Adirondacks) for 25 years. I dont want none of that rust lol. We get rusty vehicles here in florida especially if they sit to long.
Holy cow its not white! You loaded it backwards oh no
It does have a white hood lol. Tried to stay with tradition. It's easier to do burnouts with the weight towards the back of trailer.

WE GET IT. YOU HATE THE 6.5.
You are (repeatedly) telling the wrong freaking people buddy. Do you know who typically watches 6.5 videos? People that like or have the 6.5 Diesel. So why would you tell them repeatedly how badly you can't stand them?
I'd take a 6.5 over a limp-mode Isuzu any day, but I don't go around telling Duramax guys all my horror stories about owning post-2000 GM trucks. I'm clattering around in a 130hp, naturally-aspirated, Indirect Injection 6.2 Litre Detroit Diesel, in all its gutless glory. They're not as bad as people like you make them out to be. It trailers and launches a 30-foot cruiser every year and always moves under its own power, and that's more than I can say for some of the stuff I've driven in the past. Not to mention that if the wind is blowing the right way, I can get fuel economy up into the better half of the twenties.
They're slow, they're old, they're noisy. But they'll last forever if you're not an idiot about maintaining them, and they're just as capable if you're willing to wait for them. Half the cars that pass by I end up catching at the next red light anyways.
I guess what I'm getting at is that you shouldn't be trashing these things, especially with the audience this video is directed towards. The whole reason General Motors made the 4.3, 5.7, 6.2, and 6.5 was to offer an economic choice that had a decent amount of torque with good efficiency. They were great daily drivers (and still are) and are amazing service trucks for landscaping, forestry, and construction businesses. Just because it wasn't designed for the purpose you need it for doesn't give you the right to say you 'hate' it.
Go cry somewhere else
"I'm clattering around in a 130hp, naturally-aspirated, Indirect Injection 6.2 Litre Detroit Diesel"..which has nearly none of the problems a 6.5TD has, aside from the weak crank and block, which isn't a problem at 130hp. If a 6.5TD is so great, why aren't YOU caring for and feeding one? The 6.5TD has known deficiencies, some of which are catastrophic. Those are FACTS that I bet you know and that's why you aren't actually driving one. If you are so passionate about them, how about tooling to the channel owner's place and helping him get that one going?
@TylersNeighborhoodGarage I do actually, it was my dad's. '98 ¾ ton longbed with the extended cab. Other than some rot around the fender flares (that were always on it), the truck is still going strong... especially the 6.5. I drive the 6.2 because it was my first truck and it has always been my baby... It's also shorter because of the cab, so I don't have to worry about the pintle sticking out everywhere I park. I've always preferred the 80s style over OBS anyway, but I love both of them to bits and pieces. I save the 6.5 as more of a reserve truck because of the rust and things have been working out well. I've done my best to perform any preventative maintenance (6.5 owners know exactly what I'm talking about) and I haven't seen anything catastrophic happen, unless it happened when my dad owned it 10-15 years ago and he never told me about it. If the channel owner wanted help and lived nearby, I wouldn't mind helping him out, I have a buddy that just bought a tired '96 RWD 1 ton. It's got some clicks on the dash, but once the fitting for the oil cooler line comes in we'll have it back on the road. Regardless of how you feel about the 6.5, it's still not the coolest choice to repeatedly tell people that most likely love them how much you despise them over and over.
@@dozerfarms All i can tell you is that if you dislike people telling other people how much they hate things, how much they hate other people, how terrible a mechanic someone is and pretty much any other comment that someone isn't brave enough to say in person...i would avoid the YT comment section completely.
@@TylersNeighborhoodGarage But the reason I commented in the first place was because of the video...
