    Ports decrease muzzle velocity, whereas comps do not. Comps also add muzzle weight, which keeps the muzzle weighed down. A comp, plus a tungsten guide rod, feels like an airsoft gun.

      QVO Tactical and Tier 1 Concealed both have lots of content with ported barrels and comped guns and have both discussed the difference being negligible. We’re talking 20-25 fps which would amount to less than .25 ft/lbs of energy difference so effectively zero difference regardless of barrel length or port design (Within reason. Meaning any logical setup. Not stupidly massive ports, not 15 holes, ports being located at least halfway down the barrel and not by the chamber, barrel lengths reasonably expected for carry, ammo types reasonably expected for carry, etc.) I have also measured velocity with ported, comped, and normal barrels on a Glock, velocities were all within very small increments, even overlapped some with shitty ammo. FWIW, Tier 1 Concelaed did a pretty comprehensive video about this exact subject, with different handguns and different shooters, using both ported and compensated guns.
    In that particular video, it seemed the ported guns came out on top, over the comp'd guns. Which leads me to believe it might come down to what type of porting a gun has vs which model comp it has.
    Which then leads me to believe, we're splitting hairs. Ported or comp'd is certainly better than a stock gun. The rest may just be preference.

      It really depends - and actually might surprise you. Both monsoon tactical and Vulcan machine works port barrels on 1911 and 2011s for 250. Granted this is a send out with sometimes long lead times. The ramjet afterburner is 390 and you have to do it yourself.

    Aside from the comped version just being heavier at the end of the barrel, it applying roughly the same amount of gasses further away from your hand (and thus in a larger radius) would mean more torque, meaning more recoil reduction, even if slightly.

  • @jatomisstevenson141
    @jatomisstevenson141 Před 6 měsíci +53

    What's interesting here is where the gun falls back down to, moreso than the overall recoil angle. It looks like the ported one restored the sight picture a lot quicker (closer) than the compensated one at least for Micah. My understanding is that muzzle flip shouldn't matter as much as where the gun sits after the action cycles that determines the speed of the followup shot.

    • @jerichorosas
      @jerichorosas Před 6 měsíci +13

      So yes.
      That said some of that has to do with the load. Different loads will work comps differently. For example loads that have higher pressures and more gas will force the comp to dip (like the +p loads) but powder puff loads (like the Jello shots) may not work the comp enough. This is without even considering the recoil spring weight and how lighter recoil springs sometimes help with that dip, but then it’s eating less of the cycling energy.
      None of this is as simple as, throw a comp on there and hope for the best.
      For example, my open gun has both porting and a compensator and fires 9 major ammo at about 160% maximum factory load pressures. Even shooting way hotter ammo than anything this Glock can handle, it shoots flatter than any of these guns. It is a system, not just any one thing, that drives how the gun behaves.

    Even tho the ported barrel's are alleged to have minimal velocity loss, I've always wanted to see a side by side comparison of how defensive ammunition is effected by the velocity of the ported barrel. Its hard to find ballistic gel comparisons of the two. I feel you and GT have the platforms to provide the the industry the information needed to make an informed decision.

      I think you loose about 100 fps with ported and none with comp. I'd like to see a comparison also. Comp still has a full barrel is probably why it's not effected.

      People are spamming it in the comments and even Micah said it himself in the comment section responses.
      He lost 15-30 fps from ports so don't worry about it. It'd like losing half a mm of barrel length haha.

      @scottrenner1576 Před 6 měsíci

      @@jason200912 I understand, a lot of what ive read about the ported barrels shows minimal fps loss, however, defensive ammunition is designed for specific FPS's, so I think it would be interesting to see if the minimal FPS loss effected the expansion and penetration of the bullet.

    • @jason200912
      @jason200912 Před 6 měsíci

      @@scottrenner1576 hollow points perform better with lower fps generally.
      One exception might be ranger talons which are very unreliable and require super long barrels or the bullet won't open up due to regular clothing.
      Federal HST, Gold Speer both seem to have no difference whether +p or standard is used. With the exception that 147 HST penetrates 2 inches less at 15" at standard load.
      If the defensive ammo offers a +p option, it's usually better to take it unless you specifically want 147 HST which for lower penetration.
      Corbon, barnes XPD, Vortac all use the exact same bullet and in my opinion are the best, most reliable 9mm hollowpoint that expands exactly to double the 9mm original bullet unlike HST and gold dot which only achieve about 150% diameter. The XPD bullets penetrate 13 inches of gel which means it can probably only be used for direct bullet to attacker purposes and cannot be used for punching barriers that you get with 18" gel punchers.

    I really liked the music in general, classical was fitting in that particular piece, the little piece of music just before the night shooting because it was originally used the mid 1970’s motorcycle movie On Any Sunday with the legendary Steve McQueen, motorcycle riding and racing was a huge thing in the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s that real men did, but the influx of illegal Allen’s with mother F’in soccer has killed the off road riding and racing of motorcycles, and then the house music which is all like Big 80’s night club music.

    Cool info! I’d add that the biggest benefit to a comp is that the end of the barrel becomes a striking weapon. You don’t have to worry about pushing your firearm out of battery in a self defense scenario unlike either a ported or unmodified firearm.

    • @Bisley1
      @Bisley1 Před 6 měsíci

      I‘m not sure this makes sense. Pushing the comp back will push the barrel and slide back and out of battery since the comp is m attached to the barrel. Essentially it’s no different than pushing back the barrel ans slide without a comp. A weaponlight that extends past the muzzle will however act as a stand off device.

    • @thaatduudee6525
      @thaatduudee6525 Před 6 měsíci

      @@Bisley1 a weapon light for sure! But my thinking isn’t necessarily that it could be used as a stand off device in the sense that you could brace up against cover and take a shot, but rather that you could punch forward in a natural motion and you wouldn’t push the gun out of battery. Most semi autos use a locking mechanism that’s cycled by the slide itself pushing on releases and pushing the barrel into the right position, so if the burden is on the barrel to be the strike face rather than the slide you’ll be less likely to push your gun out of battery. This all of course being secondary to all the other benefits of a comp, but I’d still personally like to be able to throw a solid punch over being forced to try and hit something with the grip of the pistol with an axe style swing. But absolutely, add the weapon light for a bit of extra assurance and honestly heft lol
