1972 Mercury 110 9.8hp Outboard Motor Lake Test

- I took this motor in for service to get it running for a customer to use for a fishing motor. It was kinda rough, but it turned out OK even if it's a little tired. It got a new impeller, gear oil, shifter repaired, and a little carburetor adjustment. The gearcase leaks a little, but not yet bad enough to replace the seals.

I have been doing well, just busy between work and other responsibilities in life. It was great to get out on the lake again. There will be more to come. I'm thinking IL be running some of my collection that has been dormant for a while. I didn't get to work on many of my project motors over this past winter. Thanks for watching!

It dies run well and is quite smooth. It's a little tired ad it runs more like a 7.5 than a 9.8 but it's smooth and runs well. It'll take the owner to the fishing spot and back. Thanks for watching!

Awesome motor, my dad's boat has a 2004 mercury efi 200 2 stroke, max speed is 60 to 65 mph at 5500 rpms

1970 by cowling i had the exact same one, 69 said merc 110 on the side at the top, and the 71 said mercury in big letters and kiekhaefer in small at the top. The phase maker ignitions (with points) on these get old and start leaking the 1kv primary voltage and cause a pile of running issues
Agreed, the cowling suggests 1970. The serial dated it as 1971. With Mercs, serial number is supposed to be king, so I called it a 1971. It also has the small bayonet fuel fitting which also suggests 1970. I'm not sure which it really is. Yes, the Thunderbolt phase maker ignition can be all sorts of trouble. Thanks for watching!

@@oldjohnnyrude8404I have a chance to pick up a 1985ish Force/Gamefisher 7.5 HP real cheap…because the guy misplaced the carburetor. Apparently Chrysler 1981-1985 carburetor is compatible. i'd love for you to share your opinion between the Mercury and Evinrude / Johnson motor you run , i aways heard the Mercury motors were a nightmare to work on i'm not sure the reliability of them as i've always had Evinrude . and when you panned forward and said the Evinrude was your backup made me smile .
I prefer the way the OMC motors are built to the way the Mercury motors are built. Some Mercurys are a real pain to work on. These aren't too bad, they just have some traits I don't like. Some things I actually like better than OMC, but those traits are few. I have found OMC motors to have the edge over the Mercs for reliability, but most of them I have had have been pretty reliable. This particular motor was one that I just went through and knew nothing about before it was brought to me. Those little 4hp Evinrudes make great backup motors. This one is always a good runner and starts well. The nightmarish Mercs, from what I can tell, are the ones with the Auto transmission. Not the later tiller shift, but the original automatic transmission. I have never worked on them, but I know they require quite a number of special tools and several hours to do an impeller replacement even for someone who knows how to do it. I love the styling of then, but I don't own one. Thanks for watching!
Mercs are a nightmare to those untrained for them. I cut my teeth on Mercs and Mercruiser, been wrenching on them and the other mfgrs for over 40 years.. they're not that bad if you're properly trained And the proper tools. If either isn't available, you're facked.. lol

I just picked up the same motor it seems to be neutral pushed back then both clicks forward are forward
I would be willing to be someone assembled the shift rod incorrectly. Remove the lower unit, clean and grease the splines on the shift rod. There is a gap in the spline on the shift rod. Align the gaps in the splines and reassemble the lower unit while making sure the water tube is aligned with the water pump. I hope this helps. Thanks for watching!

I put this one at 1969 as well until I looked up the serial number which put it at 1972.🤷♂️ I'm no expert on Mercs. It turned out OK and it will take the owner fishing. That was the goal. Thanks for watching, Greg!

Makes a strange clanging though at weird intervals, not so sure if that’s a bearing for the crank that’s worn or smaller issue. Might just run it til it dies otherwise. Keep it up!

Check Marineengine.com. you need to look up by serial number to be sure, but many of these motors with Thunderbolt ignition use the same coils. Almost all Mercury parts are pricey and OMC are getting pricier and scarcer all the time. Thanks for watching!

I get around 17mph (24km/h) out of one of these on a 14 foot aluminum boat. These are pretty good motors. The biggest trouble with this wra Mercury is the carbon steel drive shaft and wiring insulation that rots away. Thanks for watching!

1970/71 same decals but don't recall the difference in the smaller engines, the 4 and 6cyl engines the badge on the top cover is slightly different.
Could be. The serial number list i found put this one in 1972, so that's what I listed it as. I'm much more familiar with the OMC motor styling and graphics per model year than the Mercs. Thanks for watching!

@@EricMcNettCorsairMan the cover is from a '70, but the friction knob at the end of the tiller and the side-mounted stop button are from a later year.
That engine isn't running full throttle I can hear it the carb needs cleaning and adjusting it isn't revving out.
I absolutely agree with you. I believe this is exactly what is going on here. If I get a chance, I'll go through the carburetor and run it again. It definitely does not reach rated RPM at full throttle. Nothing seems to be choking off the exhaust so I believe it is a carburetor issue. Thanks for watching!
That sounds so muffled it reminds me of one 9.9 OMC that had huge amount of soot and unburned oily gunk inside the exhaust chamber (the chamber behind the exhaust cover plat in the powerhead).
Lots of low rpm trolling usage + the thermostat stuck open caused it i think.
This one, I believe it is not getting quite enough fuel at full throttle. It probably needs the carburetor cleaned out and readjusted. It does not reach full RPMs for a 9.8. I'll see if I get a chance to go through the carburetor and run it again. Thanks for watching!
@@oldjohnnyrude8404possibly check the throttle to stator plate cam.. also the throttle itself for wot operation.. cam follower on throttle shaft Do come loose and misaligned.. good luck.
I would say 70 or 71. 1972 was the year Mercury switched to Blue

Maybe a previous Owner like the Red better and got an Older Cowl. I did that with my 84 115, I acquired a complete Cowl from a 71 115 in 86, and used it. Looked much better than the Fecal Matter brown Merc used in 1984-85
@@pjimmbojimmbo1990 That is certainly a possibility. I have no history of this motor at all. The red band cowl may well have been swapped out sometime in the past.
Do you have the fuel line fitting number
30635T3 is the number for the small female bayonet fitting used on the Mercury outboards from early 1970s and back. Supposedly 1971 and earlier, but this motor dates 1972 by serial number and still used the smaller fitting. Thanks for watching!

@@williamjackson8836 It will be very close to the transition from the small to the larger bayonet fuel fitting. I would suggest checking the serial number (online search should be able to confirm) for the year. If it is any newer than this one, it should have the large fitting which is much more commonly available. If the fitting on the motor has a spring loaded pin sticking out of the center of the fitting, that is the large one. If there is just a hole without the pin, that's the small fitting.
I can't seem to find my serial number online, it has a plate that states 2281950
@@williamjackson8836 Your serial number indicates fthat you have a model 39 (3.9hp) which is earlier than the 4hp in this video. All the 3.9hp singles should use the small bayonet fitting that I gave the part number for previously.
Yeah, does seem light on power... Wrong prop?? Sounds like it winding up, but who knows...
Yes, it is light on power. It runs more like a 7.5 to me. It's not reaching full RPM, but it has the correct prop. I suspect the carb could use a good cleaning. If I get around to it, I'll try cleaning it and running it again. Thanks for watching!
@@oldjohnnyrude8404 curious if you ever cleaned the carb and got more speed? I have a 81 9.8 and am only getting 13.5 mph. Plan was to clean the carb out good and maybe try a 2 blade prop vs the three blade that is on right now. Thanks!
@@CTSHOYT The owner came and got this motor back before I cleaned the carb. I doubt the two blade vs. three blade prop will make much if any difference in top speed. The three blade will probably give a little better holeshot. I never discourage trying things though. Thanks for watching!
